Our new Bushfire Resisting Exterior Cladding is treated,
tested and approved for use in areas rated up to and
including BAL29. The treatment is effective for the whole
service life of the cedar cladding because the fire retardant
is impregnated within the timber making it leach resistant.
AS3959:2009 Bushfire Attack Level standard has been
designed to improve the fire resisting performance of
buildings when subject to bushfire attack. The impact the
standard has had on material selection for construction in
bushfire prone areas has been far-reaching.
The cladding can be docked to the required length without
affecting the efficacy of the fire treatment (Sealing the
docked ends with a waterproof sealer is still recommended
as best building practice).
AS3959-2009 contains construction solutions for all bushfire
attack levels (BAL). Bushfire attack levels include:
BAL-LOW, 12.5, 19, 29, 40 & FZ.
The number after the BAL is a measure of the heat flux
exposure threshold in kW/m2.
This product has been weathered in a lab, post treatment of
fire retardant, and passes AS3959:2009. As such it can be
used in external exposed applications. All of this information
is contained on the fire test certificate. There is currently
only one profile and it is unique to our range and for this
product only. We do not, at this stage, offer any other
profiles or finishes.
However, due to the unpredictable nature and behaviour of
fire combined with the extreme weather conditions
experienced in Australia, ultimately, no guarantee can be
provided that a building will survive in the event of a
bushfire.
Many timbers, such as Western Red Cedar, are
traditionally used in these bush areas because of their
natural beauty, can now no longer be used in the higher
rated BAL areas.
Very important: This product is sold as raw only. Adding
coatings, such as stains and oils etc…, to the product will
alter the composition and the product it will require
re-testing. This can be achieved, however at considerable
cost in terms of time and money.
Untreated Western Red Cedar can be used as an external
cladding in BAL-12.5 & lower without restriction and can
still be used as an external cladding in BAL-19 except for
within 400mm of the ground but not in higher rated areas.
