“La Estrella del Norte” The Gateway of the Northern Palawan
The town of Taytay derived its name from the word “Talaytayan”. It is a native word for few pieces of bamboo or
wood arranged together to serve as a bridge.
Folklore has it that it when the first Spaniards landed on this place they met a native while they were approaching
a bridge. They asked what the name of the place is. The native thinking that the foreigners meant the “Talaytayan”
as the Spaniards seemed to be pointing at the foot bridge that enable the people to cross the brook that divides
the barrio proper to the Reterada, replied “Talaytayan”.
Forthwith, the Spaniards made it on the record that the name of the place is Talaytayan. With the passage of time
it was shortened to Taytay and so the name sticks to this day.
The town was founded on 1623. It was once the capital of Palawan then only known as Calamianes. The Municipal
Government was officially established in the year 1662 by Count San Augustine who was commissioned by
Governor General Fajardo.
