Intelligently Connected Pipe
S-Lay Installation
Using the patented GMC Mechanical Connector, installation operations can be
optimised for both S-lay and J-lay installations offshore.
Experience where it counts.
Innovation where it matters.
GMC Mechanical Connector Key Features:
• Binary concentrically grooved connector
• Multiple metal-to-metal nib seals
• ID & OD preloaded contact shoulder
• Highly fatigue resistant (=DNV B1)
• Excellent torsional slip resistance
• Unlimited fast make-break cycles
• Wide range of sizes (6¨to 48¨)
DNV ISO21329 ‘Statement of Conformity’ HOU-01-SC-42039783
The GMC Mechanical Connector is the core technology behind GMC’s Intelligently
Connected Pipe (ICP), which delivers a more robust pipeline, whilst simplifying and
reducing installation costs.
ICP allows the time consuming joining operation to be performed onshore, off the
critical path. During offshore operations, only the fast coupling of the male and
female connector is performed by a single connector station.
As a result, with better planning and with more efficient technology, the offshore
installation contractor can effectively reduce the stand-by time and the actual
operation time of the installation vessel and personnel.

ICP Connection Station
A compensated connection station is required to mechanically connect the ICP joints. This is a
development of an existing tool used for riser installation, and is installed towards the stern of the
vessel. In operation, the pipe string is retained by a collar clamp that engages with a groove on the
female connector at the end of the pipeline. A male end of a second pipe joint is then engaged with the
clamped joint and a hydraulic tool used to make the mechanical connection.
The connector station is mounted on rails with hydraulic cylinders with an accumulator pack to
compensate for vessel motions . It compensates for acceleration and deceleration differences between
the vessel & pipe maintaining the back tension at a sufficient level. Hence, reduce the uncontrolled
load due to displacement at the surface, maintain load through the sagbend and reduce induced loads
at the seabed touchdown point. An accumulator pack (separate unit) is connected to the cylinder by
means of hydraulic piping. A position sensor is connected to the trolley to measure the position of the
trolley.
