The Mellanby Centre for bone research MELLANBY CENTRE TRAINING COURSE: DIAGNOSTIC TESTS FOR OSTEOPOROSIS THE EDGE, SHEFFIELD, UK In association with the European Calcified Tissue Society www.ectsoc.org www.mellanbycentre.org/seminars MONDAY 6 JULY 2015 » Clinical Use of Bone Turnover Markers TUESDAY 7 JULY 2015 » Identification of Vertebral Fracture CPD Approval in process ENDORSED BY: INVITATION TO ATTEND I am delighted to invite you to the second Mellanby Centre Training Course: Diagnostic Tests for Osteoporosis to be held in Sheffield, 6-7 July 2015. The intention of this two-day course is to apply the scientific knowledge and research expertise developed within the Mellanby Centre to offer high quality training for clinicians, allied health professionals and laboratory scientists working in the field of Course overview: Bone Turnover Markers (BTM) have long been used as diagnostic tests for metabolic bone diseases. In the past 20 years, markers that are more specific to bone have been introduced and have been found to be useful in osteoporosis, particularly for monitoring treatment. This course aims to provide a background to the clinical use of bone turnover markers. Target audience: This day-long course is open to clinicians (e.g. endocrinology, rheumatology, care of the elderly and clinical chemistry), laboratory scientists and nurses involved in the clinical management of patients at risk of osteoporotic fractures. Objectives: At the end of the course, participants should: • understand the process of bone remodelling and how this can be studied using BTM. • appreciate the methods used for measuring BTM and their sources of variability. • be able to identify the role of BTM in the diagnosis and monitoring of bone diseases in a number of clinical settings including; osteoporosis, chronic kidney disease, Paget’s disease, osteomalacia, GIOP and PHPT. • be familiar with best practice in the clinical use of BTM. TOPICS & SPEAKERS Monday 6 July 2015: Clinical Use of Bone Turnover Markers (BTM) CPD: Applications for CPD have been submitted – please refer to the website for updates. Further details on the programme are on the next pages of this leaflet. I am very excited to be offering this programme of training and hope that you will come and join us in the vibrant city of Sheffield. I look forward to welcoming you. Richard Eastell PROGRAMME CHAIR Director of the Mellanby Centre for Bone Research Course overview: Up to one in five older people will have a vertebral fracture, but most are unaware of this. Such fractures can be diagnosed by spinal radiographs but more recently, the bone densitometer has been used for this purpose: vertebral fracture assessment. The use of this technique is increasing worldwide; this course aims to give a basic training on the identification of vertebral fractures. Target audience: This day-long course is open to clinicians, scan technicians and nurses involved in developing and delivering fracture risk assessment services. Objectives: At the end of the course, participants should: • understand the importance of vertebral fracture identification. • understand the principles of good quality image acquisition. • be aware of the different methods used to identify vertebral fracture. • recognise non-fracture vertebral deformities. • recognise the clinical features of vertebral fracture. CPD: Applications for CPD have been submitted – please refer to the website for updates.
