Staff members from Security Services , Terminal Operations, and Marine Services joined the Market Development and Public Relations Department to inform students about Maritime careers. Just over 1,000 students visited the booth and interacted with the Port team. The presence of the Cadet Officers in uniform enhanced the corporate Secondary school students deeply engaged with BPI Staff at the Career Showcase 2014 BPI News Bulletin 1 Lifting of Chamberlain Bridge The lifting of the Chamberlain Bridge in historic Bridgetown is a show stopping sight that draws attention every time it is done. Installed in 2005-2006, the operation of the bridge is overseen by the Marine Services Department. This pivotal role requires training and an understanding of the complex mechanisms in place. The state-of-the-art technology includes a special locking system and an extensive control panel that is housed underneath the roadway. Interestingly, the bridge is not made of steel. It has been hailed as one of the first bridges to utilize a fibre-reinforced plastic material in its construction. The lifting of the bridge is done on a request basis, coordinated by Tonya SealeJohn in the Marine Services office at the Careenage. Lifting of Chamberlain Bridge at 375th Anniversary of Parliament NISE 100 Improvements Challenge BPI joined several other companies and public sector organisations in the NISE Challenge 2014. Our aim is to have employees come up with100 ideas that can be implemented during the year, which will improve • our work approach • our work process • our customer service delivery • our work relations with colleagues and management • meeting deadlines • environmental improvements • personal development • the health and safety aspects of our workplace Already several workable ideas have been submitted, and employees are encouraged to get hold of the “Improvements Record Form’, register your idea for improvement, and submit them through your Head of Department. BPI News Bulletin 2 In-House Committee Community Outreach Gives to the Geriatric Hospital BPI Community Outreach Committee brought the spirit of good cheer to the patients of the Geriatric Hospital on Beckles Road this Easter. Centre: David Jean-Marie, CEO BPI, presenting supplies to Nurse Marissa Carter of the Geriatric Hospital, while members of the nursing staff and BPI Community Outreach Committee look on. The Committee’s visit was part of a commitment made by CEO of the BPI, David Jean-Marie to donate supplies on a quarterly basis this year to the hospital. Staff Nurse Marissa Carter accepted the donation on behalf of the hospital and thanked the Port Chorale for the musical renditions to the elderly. Community Outreach Chairman, Meshell Rawlins said that they looked forward to helping the less fortunate in the community and were especially happy to be able to help the elderly. Inaugural Cruise The Norwegian Breakaway made its inaugural call to Barbados early this year. Chief Executive Officer of Barbados Port Inc, David Jean-Marie noted that “this inaugural call signals a continuing trend towards growth in 2014 after a 7.5% increase in passenger arrivals in 2013, when the Bridgetown Port hosted 663,263 cruise ship passengers and 374 ship calls.” The ship sailed from its homeport in New York on a 12-day cruise that included San Juan, St Thomas, St Maarten, St Lucia, Barbados and St Kitts. Barbados Port Inc Team Commended For Royalist Regatta Race Kayode Branch, Jeremy O’Dowd and Victor Cooke of Marine Services represented Barbados Port Inc in the Royalist Regatta Race which was organized by the Duke of Edinburgh Foundation, and was included in the celebrations of the 375th Anniversary of Parliament. The BPI crew joined Captain Paul Johnson and two other crew members, placing 4th, 4th, 4th and 2nd in the race series. Captain Johnson commended the BPI Marine cadets stating that the results were “an outstanding accomplishment for the novice racing crew”. Congratulations to our team for a commendable performance!! Our Marine Cadets being introduced to HRH Prince Edward BPI News Bulletin 3 Week of Excellence Programme BPI congratulates longstanding BPI employee, Mr. John Agard, on being the recipient of a special recognition award celebrating his efforts at the launch of the Week of Excellence Programme from the Social Partners of Barbados. The Barbados Association of Office Professionals (BAOP) celebrated Administrative Professionals’ Week during April 20 – 27, 2014. Agard, a staunch supporter of the Social Partnership, has been hailed as a pioneer and one of the catalysts behind the prestigious Week of Excellence, an annual initiative designed to create and increase productivity awareness and excellence across all industries in Barbados. The Association will also be celebrating its 40th Anniversary on June 21, 2014 with an Installation and Awards Ceremony, and the Launch of the 40th Anniversary Celebrations at the Radisson Aquatica Resort. Conceptualized close to 14 years ago, the Week of Excellence programme has evolved and celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2013. Designated individuals from each department are now responsible for management of the Notice Boards, which will be used to communicate more effectively with employees throughout the Port. Staff members are encouraged to check the Notice Boards regularly to keep informed about activities and Port operations.
