Lifting of Chamberlain Bridge
The lifting of the Chamberlain Bridge in historic Bridgetown
is a show stopping sight that draws attention every time it
is done. Installed in 2005-2006, the operation of the bridge
is overseen by the Marine Services Department. This pivotal role requires training and an understanding of the complex mechanisms in place. The state-of-the-art technology
includes a special locking system and an extensive control
panel that is housed underneath the roadway.
Interestingly, the bridge is not made of steel. It has been
hailed as one of the first bridges to utilize a fibre-reinforced
plastic material in its construction. The lifting of the bridge
is done on a request basis, coordinated by Tonya SealeJohn in the Marine Services office at the Careenage.
