Migrating Blitz (BWA) folders to Gmail using Apple Mail
SUMMARY: In order to migrate mail from your Blitz (BWA) folders to Gmail, you will set up an IMAP
connection to both accounts in Apple Mail and copy the content from the Blitz (BWA) account to the
Gmail account.
NOTE: These instructions and screenshots for setting up a connection to Apple Mail were created in
Mac OS 8, Apple Mail 6.2. Other versions of the Mac OS may present different windows. The
settings remain the same but the presentation may differ.
Basic Settings for the BWA Account:
Account type: Exchange
Incoming server: outlook.office365.com
Security: Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
Login info:
Username: <NetID>@kiewit.dartmouth.edu (substitute your actual NetID for <NetID>)
1. Start the Mail program.
a. If you have never set up Mail you'll get a Wizard that will walk you through these steps
b. If you already have accounts set up in Mail, Go to File > Add Accounts , Click the + at the
bottom of the window to add an account, then click 'Continue'

2. You may get a message that says "Trying to log into the Exchange server
"autodiscover.dartmouth.edu" failed.
a. If you see this, change the User name field to : <NetID>@kiewit.dartmouth.edu, where
<NetID> is your actual NetID, then click Continue
b. Otherwise, you will be brought to a screen where you will enter the information as shown
below, then click Continue
Account Type: Exchange
Description: The name of the
account as you want it to appear in
your list of mail accounts

Uncheck Contacts and Calendars
unless you want to keep copies of

3. Incoming Mail Security window – check the box to Use SSL and click Continue
4. You'll be presented with an Account Summary. Click 'Create'

It may take up to 24 hours for all your mail to appear. Once all the emails in the Blitz (BWA) folders
are downloaded, continue with the steps below to copy the content to your Gmail account.
5. In Mail, Go to File > Add Accounts , Click the + at the bottom of the window to add an account,
then click 'Continue'
a. Enter your Gmail account information and click 'Create'
6. In the Account Summary window, uncheck the 'Calendars' and 'Chat' boxes, then click 'Create'

7. Scroll down in the left navigation pane and you will now see your Alumni Account and your Gmail
account with their corresponding folders (called Labels in Gmail)
8. Go to Mailbox > New Mailbox
a. From the dropdown menu for Location, select the top Gmail entry (with the red M envelope
logo)
b. Type the name of the first folder that you want to copy from your Blitz (BWA) account, then
click 'OK'
c. In your Gmail account online, this folder will show as a 'Label'
9. Repeat step 8 for all the folders you want to copy from your Blitz (BWA) account
10. Select the first folder in your Alumni Account that you want to
copy
a. Press 'Cmd/Apple key' + A (Select All)
b. Got to Message > Copy To, and select the Gmail folder
with the corresponding name
c. The messages will be copied and you will see the
progress under 'Mail Activity' – it will show as 'outgoing messages'
11. Repeat step 10 for all the folders you want to copy from your
Blitz (BWA) account

12. When the process is complete and you are sure you have all the mail you want to keep, remove
your Blitz (BWA) account from Apple Mail
a. Go to Mail > Preferences
b. Select your Alumni Account, then click the '-' at the bottom left of the window
c. You will prompted to click 'Remove' if you are sure you want to delete the account
13. Repeat step 12 for your Gmail account if you wish. You may continue to use the Gmail account
in Mail if you prefer
