N JULY, the health authority
Sundhedsstyrelsen recommended that
hospitals reduce the use of
blood transfusions with donated blood, and now hospitals in the Capital Region are
taking concrete steps to follow through on this advice.
Better planning
ASTRID Nørgaard, the senior doctor responsible for
blood management at the
Capital Region, explained
the reasoning. “In Denmark
we use far too much blood
– we overtransfuse,” she said.
“Compared to countries

like Norway, Finland, the
Netherlands and France,
we give double the amount
of blood per 1,000 citizens
– about 70 portions. The
problem is that this practice
doesn’t have a documented
positive effect – either for the
patients’ survival rate or the
health system as a whole.”
Rigshospitalet,
Herlev
Hospital and Nordsjællands Hospital in northern
Zealand will now assess on
a case-by-case basis before
planned operations whether
using donor blood is necessary and will use other alternatives where appropriate.

Danish F-16s fighting IS in Iraq
S
EVEN F-16 fighter
jets have been deployed to Iraq to
take on Islamic State (IS),
the prime minister Helle
Thorning-Schmidt
confirmed on Friday.
The Danish fighter jets
will only be active in Iraqi
airspace – and not Syrian airspace – ThorningSchmidt said. The government received an official
request from the US yesterday asking the Danes to
contribute fighter jets to the
international coalition bat-
tling the IS.
“IS is a terrible organisation that Denmark will take
part in fighting,” ThorningSchmidt said in a press release.
“IS is a threat to Denmark and our allies. If we
leave them be, it will only
get worse. Pretending that
nothing is happening and
ignoring the issue is not an
option.”
Denmark is also likely to
be involved in training Iraqi
and Kurdish security troops
in the near future.
