The oil that started it all BEAUTY OILS: A GROWING TREND “HISTORICALLY, CONSUMERS PERCEIVED OILS AS BEING HEAVY AND GREASY. NOW WE ARE IN THE AGE OF ‘DRY OILS,’ AESTHETICALLY PLEASING PRODUCTS THAT CONFER A MULTITUDE OF BENEFITS ON THE SKIN. BIO-OIL WAS THE FIRST DRY OIL ON THE MARKET, AHEAD OF ITS TIME.” John Knowlton Cosmetic Scientist Why, after so many years of using creams and lotions, have consumers started to appreciate the benefits of oils to keep their skin healthy and in top condition? Once met with skepticism, beauty oils now represent a strong trend that shows no sign of slowing down. Store shelves around the world offer a growing array of beauty oils that span the gamut of skin and hair care: facial oils, body oils, hair conditioning and colouring oils, nail and cuticle oils, and cleansing oils. Oils are becoming an important part of the global skincare industry, and also an important part of our daily skincare regimen. Meet Bio-Oil, the oil that started it all. Bio-Oil offered a different approach to skincare well before the beauty industry began embracing oils. In fact, when Bio-Oil was ready in 1987, the world was not quite ready for Bio-Oil. The problem-solution skincare oil was an aberration in an industry dominated by creams, lotions and ‘oil-free’ formulas. FOR CANADIAN WOMEN WHO INTEND TO USE A BEAUTY OIL WITHIN THE NEXT 12 MONTHS, 4 IN 10 SAID THEY ARE CURIOUS ABOUT THE BEAUTY OIL TREND.* Despite the market’s hesitance, Bio-Oil developed a loyal following at home in South Africa where it caught the attention of brothers Justin and David Letschert of Union Swiss, who subsequently bought the brand from product developer Dieter Beier. In 2002, Union Swiss introduced Bio-Oil to the global retail market and it quickly became a top-selling skincare product in multiple countries. Bio-Oil has since garnered more than 100 skincare awards and a wealth of customer testimonials along with doctor, pharmacist and midwife recommendations from around the world. OF THE CANADIAN SURVEY RESPONDENTS WHO USE BEAUTY OILS, A MAJORITY (64%) SAY THEY USE THEM DAILY; ALMOST HALF OF THOSE ARE USING BEAUTY OILS BOTH MORNING AND NIGHT.* • • • OF THOSE WHO CURRENTLY USE BEAUTY OILS, 63% SAY THEY OWN OR HAVE TRIED MULTIPLE BEAUTY OIL PRODUCTS.* Products like Bio-Oil helped consumers move beyond the misconceptions by demonstrating that an oil could deliver essential skincare benefits while being light, non-greasy, non-acnegenic and quickly absorbed. As an innovator, Bio-Oil has relied on product efficacy, clinical results and recommendations to educate consumers about its skincare benefits. When Bio-Oil debuted in Canada in 2008, the beauty oil category as we know it today did not exist; but, where oils were often avoided in the past, we now see growing consumer interest in oil-based skincare products. More than a decade after its global launch, Bio-Oil’s popularity continues to grow along with worldwide acceptance of beauty oils. In the wake of this success, hundreds of new products have followed in recent years, giving rise to a robust retail category of its own. As the beauty oil category continues to evolve, those who are using oils are helping drive new growth. BEAUTY OILS ARE TRIED, TESTED AND RECOMMENDED: 95% OF CANADIAN SURVEY RESPONDENTS WHO USE BEAUTY OILS SAID THEY ARE LIKELY TO RECOMMEND THEM TO OTHERS.* MORE THAN HALF OF CANADIAN WOMEN SURVEYED SAY THEY USE OR INTEND TO USE A BEAUTY OIL IN THE NEXT 12 MONTHS.* Through it all, Bio-Oil remains one of the best-selling and most recommended oils in the world. Its unique formula continues to deliver clinically-proven results to help improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks and uneven skin tone, while offering a multitude of additional skincare benefits in one bottle. SKIN SCIENCE “WHEN OIL MEETS SKIN AN AMAZING THING HAPPENS... OILS CAN HYDRATE, PROTECT, PURIFY AND HELP BALANCE THE SKIN. OILS CAN ALSO DELIVER CONCENTRATED INGREDIENTS, SO A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY TO HELP KEEP SKIN IN TOP CONDITION.” Dr. Paul Cohen Dermatologist Our skin is one of the most visible organs, and it’s important to maintain healthy skin not just for overall attractiveness, but for optimal comfort and function. Healthy skin looks and feels good, while performing many vital roles, such as regulating water loss. The skin naturally secretes an oily substance that becomes the protective lipid layer of your skin. Many factors can impact skin health and strip away the skin’s natural oils. Common everyday experiences can take a toll, from the drying effects of indoor air systems and sun/wind exposure to the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers and anti-bacterial soaps along with hot water for bathing and handwashing. Impaired skin function can cause skin to look unhealthy, dry and dehydrated, and a breakdown of the skin barrier can open the door to dermatitis or infection. Why oils? Effective moisturization is important for overall skin health and this is where oils can play a key role in the maintenance of healthy skin. EFFECTIVE MOISTURIZATION OF THE SKIN By John Knowlton In order for skin to be healthy, it must contain an adequate amount of water, typically between 25 to 30 percent in a healthy adult human being. In everyday life, skin is regularly losing and gaining water, a process that scientists refer to as TEWL (Transepidermal Water Loss). Unfortunately, it is very common for skin to lose more moisture than it takes in from the surrounding environment, which can result in dry or dehydrated skin. What conditions cause skin to lose more water than it can gain? There are several contributing factors, but the main cause is attrition of epidermal lipids (skin’s natural oils) that occupy the spaces between skin cells, causing the skin itself to become more permeable, and thereby resulting in the loss of an excessive amount of water. ALL ACROSS CANADA, WOMEN SURVEYED SAID THAT WHEN PURCHASING SKINCARE PRODUCTS, THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES TO TREAT ARE DRY SKIN (68%) AND FINE LINES/WRINKLES (47%).* To help visualize this process, consider the skin as ‘bricks and mortar.’ The skin cells, scientifically known as corneocytes, represent the ‘bricks’ and the interstitial epidermal lipids represent the ‘mortar.’ When mortar is lost from the wall, it becomes much more permeable, thus letting water through. It is easy to imagine that if epidermal lipids are lost, then more water passes from the skin to the outside environment, resulting in a dry skin condition. In order to moisturize the skin, we therefore need to replace the epidermal lipids between the corneocytes to make sure that the ‘wall’ no longer lets water escape. 1 2 1 corneocytes (bricks) 2 epidermal lipids (mortar) Clearly then, in order to restore the skin to optimum health, it is necessary to replace the lost epidermal lipids (the ‘mortar’). It is in this context that the beneficial effect of oils, over and above that of conventional creams and lotions, can be readily observed. Creams and lotions normally contain a high percentage of water (typically between 65 and 95 percent). Water has no activity whatsoever in replacing epidermal lipids, the process necessary to moisturize the skin. A product like Bio-Oil, by stark contrast, contains no water. Therefore, when Bio-Oil is applied to the skin, there is a much higher degree of potency present. Being totally oil-based, Bio-Oil is therefore highly effective at replacing the lost epidermal lipids between the corneocytes and, in so doing, restores skin barrier function, resulting in healthy, moisturized skin. If we turn back to the ‘bricks and mortar’ model, this is akin to replacing the lost mortar between the bricks, thus allowing the wall to become waterproof once again. Perhaps one of the biggest advantages of Bio-Oil, as illustrated by the ‘bricks and mortar’ model, is its superior ability to effectively moisturize the skin and lock in moisture.
