programme guide - EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future

Postgraduate Admission Process, 2015 Intake
If you are applying for the MRes+PhD programme, please follow the instructions for the
online submission. If you are applying for the “Industry+MRes+PhD” (I+) programme,
please submit a paper application, see our relevant webpages for further information.
Applicants to the FIBE CDT will fill out the Graduate Admissions standard form
(GRADSAF) which can be found at: www.admin.cam.ac.uk/univ/gsprospectus/applying/
Please make sure all required information is included, as explained in the form headers.
The following information should be used if applying to the CDT:
Section A (A3):
- Course code is: EGEGR3
- Programme of study is: PhD (Probationary) in Future Infrastructure and Built
Environment CDT (4yrs)
- Department is: Engineering
- Final Award is: PhD, Duration is: 4 Study Mode: Full time
(A4):
- College: you are able to express a college preference here, though selected Colleges
may not be able to offer you a place. There is a University system for redirecting applicants
to a different college so that every accepted applicant receives the offer of a College place
in the end.
(A12, p4):
- Supervisor is: “To be confirmed” (you will choose your supervisor after the first year)
(A14, p4)
- Reason for applying for the course: In this box, succinctly summarise why you believe
this course is appropriate for you, supporting factually wherever possible any prior interest
in interdisciplinary research or industrial innovation. Research proposal summary is not
required at this stage (you will define it towards the end of Year 1), but you are welcome
to use space to explain your vision of the future infrastructure and built environment area,
as well as for including any other additional information in support of your application.
At the end of (A15) please also include your backup choice for supervisor/programme you
want to be considered by in case if your application to the FIBE CDT was unsuccessful.
Your application will only be passed on after it is no longer considered for the FIBE CDT.*
Section B: Funding (p5):
If you are submitting a paper application for the I+ scheme, you do not need to complete this
section at the time of the initial application.
FIBE CDT can normally provide funding for UK (in full) and EU candidates (fees-only
award, full in some cases) – please check the EPSRC funding eligibility criteria
here: http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/skills/students/help/Pages/eligibility.aspx
There are several ways how you can obtain funding necessary for your studies if you are
not eligible for full funding from the FIBE CDT award. For contingency reasons we advise
that you apply to be considered for all funding you are eligible for, typically:
UK citizens can be fully funded through FIBE CDT. You may want to apply to
CHESS funding as a backup (tick the second option box in the table on p5). Please
also complete all section B4, stating “Applying for funding from the FIBE CDT” in the
table on the bottom of p7.
EU citizens: Consider applying for Gates and CHESS funding. Tick the first and
second box in the table on p5.
Make sure you also complete section B1 and B2 (required by Gates Foundation). Please
also complete all section B4, stating “Applying for funding from the FIBE CDT” in the
table on the bottom of p7.
Funding bodies will look at supporting your maintenance contribution if you are shortlisted
for the course.
Non-EU/Overseas: Tick the first and second box in the table on p5 (Gates,
CCT&COT and CISS) and complete sections B1, B2, B3 and B4. You are not normally
eligible to apply for funding from the FIBE CDT (see EPSRC criteria). You can however
also seek funding from the Cambridge Trusts for the College and University fees for a
related PhD within Cambridge.
For deadlines please see link: http://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/finance/funding
Please submit the application by the advertised FIBE CDT deadline (first round:
31 Jan 2015) to be considered for this course and funding. Note earlier closing
dates for funding bodies, such as Gates fund.
Your application must include a completed GRADSAF form, both academic
references and a transcript before we are able to consider it.
Late applications will be considered but may not be funded, since the funding application
deadlines for EU/OS candidates are set early during each academic year. With this in
mind, EU/OS candidates who missed their respective funding deadlines may want to
consult us before applying.
Interviews are going to be held continuously from 1 September 2014. If you are
shortlisted then you may also be asked to conduct a telephone interview with the Course
Director beforehand. You will be informed about the details if you are shortlisted.
* If you are not offered a place at the FIBE CDT, then you may be still considered for a PhD studentship
at Cambridge. To have your application forwarded on, please include details of a specific backup PhD
project/supervisor, or request general circulation within one of the Departments in A(15) on your
GRADSAF application.
