ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2013
Message from the Board
On behalf of the governing body of SHEOWS
It gives me great pleasure to present to our collaborators, well-wishers and public at large the annual
report of activities of SHEOWS for the year 2010 to 2012.
At the very outset I may humbly say that I am very fortunate to write the introduction page of Annual
Report of SHEOWS. In the last 3 years which despite passing through hardest and toughest times has
maintained and upheld its sheen, status and is realizing its objective of serving the aged, helpless and
destitute by affording them all facilities of possible happiness, solace and tranquillity.
Admittedly an old age is assuredly an accursed lot when the organs of the human body fail to perform
their functions properly having become dysfunctional and lifeless with the passage of times. In such
worry- some times, we wonder what has happened to our culture and heritage which valued the aged
as repositories of wisdom and experience and looking up to them for wise counsel and socializing the
young. According to a report 23% of the elderly in India reported abuse-be it disrespect, verbal abuse,
neglect and in many case physical abuse too. Many people simply say “Galti se Haath Uth Gaya” (they
raised their hand by mistake) and thus make light of the matter. We have further got report from the
states that nearly 70 % of senior citizens don‟t report abuse (Neglect, disrespect, Economic
Exploitation) simply for maintaining the family confidentiality or fear of retaliation. It is happening by
sons and daughters in-law. Daughter in 17% cases are perpetrators too.
In such appalling situation, we re-iterate the role objective of Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram had always
been and would always be to serve the down – trodden, abandoned, destitute, old, sick and those
wracked by Dementia, Alzheimer, paralysis, disabled and fractured also. They are being extended all
facilities of free food, shelter, medicine, pure water, community atmosphere with love and affection.
Very recently Physiotherapy machine has also been in installed and the Doctor Visits also.
If would be relevant to give in brief about the Ashram which started off with only 20-30 inmates and
has by now gone up to 150 in all -110 in Delhi and about 35/40 in Garhmukteshwar. What is however
a matter of consolation and encouragement is that an equally adjacent land scape lying vacant had
now been allotted to us and thus in the enlarged space we are accommodating all such people. The
entire Ashram is now fully renovated with marble floor, modernized tiles, false ceiling, tops and thus
presenting a beautiful work-place.
I shall be failing in my duties if I don‟t mention the services and sacrifices of Dr.G.P. Bhagat Who is
single handedly managing the preponderous task of the Ashram. All accolades him.
Lastly I would say that there is still a lot more needs to be done bearing in mind that just touching the
feet of our elders is not enough, rather we should translate this as a welcome gesture born out of our
love, affection and respect. What we should never forget is what we are seeing happening to elders
to-day, sooner or later all of us (no matter how much we resist) we shall eventually be tomorrow like
our elders, This will remain relevantly true for all times to come.

ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2013
Message from the Founder Director/General Secretary
The Annual Report is aimed at informing stakeholders of our work and achievements in 2010-2013
and the opportunities and challenges ahead sharing information and exchanging thoughts with
organizations and relating to Old Aged.
On 29th November, 2003, I started a mission to save lives of elderly people dying on the road, who
were discarded from their families and neglected by the society. In order to reduce the suffering of
these people and provide them with food, cloth, medical care and shelter. I started Guru Vishram
Vridh Ashram (Old Age Home) under Saint Hardyal Educational & Welfare Society (SEOWS). This was
a step towards saving lives of all the helpless and destitute old dying on the roadside in Delhi. I
believed that every soul in this word has the right to live with dignity, respect and love.
Our elderly are suffering from atrocities done by their own children and family members. Many of
them have died on the roadside due to the injuries sustained by them. Can we change it? Is it not the
responsibility of our society? Now is the time to think and act upon this problem. These people were
part of the same society we live in, and there‟s a possibility that we can also have a similar fate.
Alzheimer‟s form of Dementia is also one of the root cause of dismissal of elderly from their homes.
There is rapid increase of Alzheimer cases across the country, with no treatment available. There is
large section of the society that is affected from this disease. The only treatment is to shower them
with love, care, and affection. However, due to modernization families have separated their elders
from their homes, the greed to early money has overshadowed our Indian value system of living in a
joint family and spending time with our parents.
I invite the kind hearted people our society to join this mission and save lives of these helpless
elderly. Vridh Sewa Ahiyan was started with the mission to inculcate the feeling of empathy and
compassion in our society and sensitize the masses to love their parents and elderly.
We invite the people of this country to come forward and join the Mega Social Event Sankulp Diwas
that aim to create awareness among the people about this noble cause. Join the Oath Taking
Ceremony to safe guard the elders and spend moments to shower dignity and respect to them.
Everyone should spread a word about Vridh Sewa Abhiyan and create awareness in the society. Be a
part of our attempt to make the world a better place to live.
Here I would like to thank you all the individual donor, experts, colleagues, observers, volunteers and
partners for their support and help, and the foundations which have sponsored us.

ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2013
BACKGROUND AND ACTIVITY REPORT
In India count of destitute old age people is increasing day by day. Factors
playing major role in increasing this number are Globalization, decreasing
moral values, nuclear families and other socio economic factors. There are
many old age homes functioning in India that are either paid homes or they
admit only those old persons who can take care of themselves, and are
mentally and physically fit. We have taken this initiative to serve bed ridden
and mentally upset aged persons suffering from disorders like Alzheimer.
The common thread running through the profiles of elderly who are at the
centre shows that over 70% of them suffer from Alzheimer‟s disease and
most of the rest also suffer from mild levels of dementia. During
conversations with them it is clear that some come from economically sound
backgrounds and are lost as they do not remember their way home or names
of family members while others are actually abandoned by family as they find
their parents/grandparents to be a burden to take care of.
About 60% of the people arriving at the Home are brought in the
organization‟s Vehicle as they are almost immobile and incapable of moving
without support. Most of the people are admitted by Delhi Police from
different places in Delhi as well as from the Govt. Hospitals and by Social
Workers. Our NGO is also registered with Senior Citizen Helpline. They are
often undernourished, living at the mercy of the able bodied citizens who
choose to take pity on them on seeing them lying on the roads. Some of them
come in with huge open wounds that due to age or other diseases do not heal
and sometimes are infested with maggots.
India has about 10% old aged of its population and a large number of them
are already facing difficulties affording their day today needs. Many of them
are being neglected and have no one to talk to. The upcoming family system
and globalization is almost making impossible for the old aged to have their
space unless they can afford their needs.

ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2013
Elderly people also face health problems like Alzheimer (memory loss),
depression, and other anxiety related disorders are some common mental
health problems that are found in majority of the old aged. Their physical
conditions also deteriorate rapidly. The condition gets worse if they have meet
an accident, fracture or end up with wounds, which doesn‟t heal soon.
The focus on elderly is driven by estimates that senior citizens will soon form a
big chunk of the national population, a growth that is fast pitching them as a
key social bloc needing care. As per census reports, the 60-plus population has
registered a steady increase from 5.7 Crore in 1991 to 7.7 crore in 2001 and
10.4 crore in 2011 - the increase in both decades being around 35%.
Indian Government study has projected that senior citizens are likely to be
12.4% of national population in 2026 while the United Nations says the 80plus population in India is likely to increase by 700% from 2000 to 2050.
Uniqueness of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashrama
The uniqueness of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram is
the simple and specific criteria of choosing its
residents: old, frail, abandoned of incapable of
fending for them. The residents when they arrive at
the home have one thing are common that they are
all in dire need of love and serious and immediate
medical attention.

OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE ORGANISATION
New Old Age Home at Garh Mukteshwar, Uttar Pradesh
Thanks to various individual donors who donated for the land we are able to think and start our dream
project Garh Mukteshwar, Uttar Pradesh.
The construction of one block has been started Garh Mukteshwar close to Ganges (river Ganga), Uttar
Pradesh. The place has its spiritual importance in Indian history and has been chosen with great
precision. This vision home could save and comfort many helpless aged. Some of the services will be
indigenous as well like organic Indian medical plants for medicine, cow shed for supportive services.
The construction will support all kinds of old aged (category wise for example a separate section/ward
for old aged with memory problems and separate ward for old aged with mental health problems) and
will be one of the unique one among all other old aged home.
Engineer India Limited (EIL) has sponsored the project and is funding the construction of one
block. The one block will provide stay arrangement to 128 homeless streets picked mentally and
physically challenged destitute old aged every year. This is certainly a loveable and fascinating place
on the “Ganga Mata” which is a generous “Goddess” who affords not only life to fields but cleanses the
body of the diseases and soul of sins and opens the way to the next life with a spiritual benefit.
