About Project Storefronts
Project Storefronts is a program that fuses the city’s creative sector with small business
development. It grew out of the Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism efforts to
diversify how they engage with artists and the community. DACT partners with the
Economic Development Corporation of New Haven and the city’s Office of Economic
Development along with the State of Connecticut’s Department of Economic and
Community Development Office of the Arts to bring this project to life. Project Storefronts
works with property owners to secure free access to their vacant retail spaces. The
program has been successful in helping landlords to rent their empty spaces. Meanwhile,
the donated space helps creative entrepreneurs to test the viability of new, innovative
business and retail initiatives while also educating themselves about what it takes to be a
successful businessperson. Project Storefronts is actively seeking new applicants and
properties in various neighborhoods.
About Creative Arts Workshop
Creative Arts Workshop is a nonprofit regional center for education in the visual arts that
has served the Greater New Haven area since 1961. Located in the heart of the awardwinning Audubon Arts District, the Workshop offers a wide range of classes in the visual
arts in its own three-story building with fully equipped studios and an active exhibition
schedule in its well-known Hilles Gallery. More than 3,000 adults and young people enroll
annually in the over 300 courses offered by Creative Arts Workshop, while thousands of
visitors enjoy the exhibitions in both galleries throughout the year. Creative Arts Workshop
makes the arts available to all who want to participate. CAW is supported by its
membership, tuition fees, arts-related fundraising events and sponsors. Additional funding
is received from corporate and individual contributors as well as from grants for special
projects from both public funds and charitable foundations.
"Whispering Galleries" Moves to the Institute Library & City Hall
After a four-month exhibition in every branch of the New Haven Free Public Library,
Whispering Galleries will be finding a few new homes this September 2014. Based on the
diaries of an anonymous New Haven county shopkeeper from the 1850s, this vieweractivated digital artwork by Amaranth Borsuk + Brad Bouse will move into City Hall and
The Institute Library on September 2 and 4 respectively. The work is Site Projects’ most
recent public art commission and is presented as part of Connecticut at Work, a yearlong
conversation about the past, present and future of work life in Connecticut created by
Connecticut Humanities.
Whispering Galleries will open on Tuesday, September 2nd at 4pm in City Hall and on
Thursday, September 4 with a celebration at The Institute Library from 6:30-9pm that
will include live music presented by Music Haven, a presentation by The Institute Library
and an artist talk and performance by artist Amaranth Borsuk.
Amaranth Borsuk Ph.D. is a scholar and published poet whose work focuses on textual
materiality – from the surface of the page to the surface of language. She is currently
Assistant Professor in Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington,
Bothell.
Brad Bouse is a developer interested in the creative applications of code
(www.bradbouse.com). Together, the artist team created Between Page and Screen
(Siglio Press, 2012), a digital pop-up book in augmented reality, which has been exhibited
nationally and internationally.
Site Projects Inc. has been presenting world-class award-winning artworks in New
Haven’s public spaces since 2004. Our exhibitions are free, open and physically
accessible to all. Recent exhibitions include: Night Rainbow | Global Rainbow New Haven,
by Yvette Mattern (2013) & Square with four circles, by Felice Varini (2010).
