278 ETFs To Grow & Protect Your Capital As investors and traders, the number of ETFs that seem to come out on almost a weekly basis can be overwhelming. With that in mind, I decided to put together a simple, easy to use ETF guide so you can quickly find the ETF that relates to the sector you are looking for. ETFs have been around for over 20 years and a big reason they are so popular is that they are very easy to trade. Buying or selling an ETF works similarly to how you'd buy and sell a stock. In fact, there are some ETFs that you can actually short and in many cases there are even inverse ETFs available. This is a great innovation and a huge help for IRA and 401(k) retirement accounts that cannot short stocks. Unlike mutual funds that can only be purchased or redeemed at the end of the day with the net asset value (NAV), an ETF can be traded and liquidated at any time during the trading day. Another dynamic that ETFs have is leverage. You can go one, two and in some cases three times leverage on some individual ETFs. This is okay to do once you become very familiar with the trading instrument. However, caution should be exercised and I would not recommend this course of action when you're just starting out trading ETFs. The 278 ETFs symbols included in this guide track everything from the stock market, bonds, precious metals, energy, commodities and everything else in between. For example, to trade in gold you have the ETF, GLD. This particular ETF is the second largest ETF in the world and holds more gold than the US government. If you want to trade in energy, it's easy with the ETF, USO. I think you'll find this list of ETF symbols very useful and one that you probably want to print out and keep close to your computer. ETFs can offer many opportunities for most investors. Care should always be taken when investing in any new instrument that you are not familiar with. The biggest risk I see in trading ETFs is liquidity. Only trade in the biggest, most liquid (highest volume) ETFs you can find. If you are thinking about trading in an ETF that has little or no liquidity, a potential market order to get in or out of a position could prove to be very expensive. Every success in trading and using this quick ETF reference guide.
