Introduction
Structural health monitoring, autonomous wireless sensor nodes, smart clothes, smart tires,
and implanted medical devices are among the most cited applications in the field of MEMS and
NEMS. Such applications need microsystems that generally use various direct or indirect
electromechanical conversion mechanisms. Among the materials, piezoelectric ones have been
widely used as efficient direct electromechanical converters for many years, but recent progress in
manufacturing techniques are now further widening the horizon of piezoelectric materials.
The device structures are intrinsically linked to the new manufacturing processes
including inkjet printing, screen-printing, pad-printing, electrophoretic deposition, nanoimprint
lithography, atomic layer deposition and hydrothermal synthesis. Top-down approaches are
evolving as well as bottom-up ones. The fabricated MEMS or NEMS are thick or thin films,
nanowires, nanowalls, and hybrid nanowire-nanowalls. The final devices may be rigid (flat or
curved), flexible, or even stretchable. Before obtaining functional devices, adequate electroding
and packaging steps are required and represent key issues as well. Modeling and
characterization tools are also evolving.
Industrial vision and strategy need to be communicated at each level of the technological
process. Then the success of the technology transfer to industry will be greatly improved. Likewise,
the definition of precise specifications in relation with a real application is necessary at an early
phase of the theoretical and experimental study.
