DePaul Community Peacemakers (CPM) Application Chicago Public Schools’ Office of Service-Learning & Civic Engagement & Vincentian Community Service Office (VCSO) of DePaul University Ministry Program Overview The Community Peacemakers (CPM) is a partnership between the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and DePaul University. The partnership matches DePaul Peacemakers with high school teachers and their students and focuses on a series of educational activities that explore the root causes of violence and alternatives for peace in schools. These activities are facilitated by the DePaul Peacemakers in collaboration with the classroom teacher. CPM involves an exploration of attitudes, behaviors, knowledge, and skills which promote non-violence through dialogue, practice, and consensus-building. Each of the activities in the Community Peacemakers initiative will focus on such themes as root causes of violence, privilege and oppression, Restorative Justice practice, peace-makers and peace-making, and social justice. Through the course of the program, DePaul Peacemakers will work with CPS students and teachers to create a peace project for their specific school. This project will focus on the issues of violence that CPS students identify and the nonviolent solutions for those issues. Partner CPS high schools will carry out their projects on DePaul’s Vincentian Service Day, May 2 nd, 2015. Vincentians In Action (VIA) The Community Peacemaker (CPM) program is rooted in the Vincentians In Action (VIA) framework. Through CPM, the tenets of Awareness, Dialogue, and Solidarity will explored to bring DePaul Peacemakers alive as Vincentians In Action (VIA) committed to community, spiritual growth, and fighting injustice. Through the practice of compassionate-listening and accompaniment, we hope to create a space to share stories and insights about the social justice issues pertaining to violence present in Chicago’s many communities. We believe that, within those spaces, we can learn from the experts (the CPS teachers, students, and community members) to work together for peace and justice. DePaul Community Peacemakers Each DePaul Peacemaker will be assigned to a CPS High School in which they will be responsible for visiting weekly from January thru June 2015. As college mentors, DePaul Peacemakers will be responsible for engaging the students in promoting peace throughout their school and community in an effort to reduce violence in the city of Chicago. The initiative will culminate with a peace project for Vincentian Service Day on Saturday, May 2nd 2015.
