With the end of September and the beginning of October,
we’ve now fully entered our fall program season. Our fall
2014 dinner and pre-dinner meetings are focusing on the local
Houston and national economies; the environment that
propels our companies and organizations. With
procurement’s continuing growth as a strategic function, it is
imperative to all of us to have a heightened situational
awareness of our business environment. Having a deep
understanding of economic drivers and consequences is very
important to what we do in our professional and even personal
lives. I am absolute in my belief that those who stay aware so
that that they can plan and prepare, will better position their
organizations, and thus themselves, for success.
Along the economic theme, we featured Patrick Jankowski of the Greater Houston Partnership in
our September dinner conference who delivered a fantastic presentation and Q/A on what’s
happening economically with our city. Patrick talked traffic, construction, the bustling port, and
many more important topics. Patrick’s slide pack is imbedded in our website…feel free to take a
look.
A brief reminder of what to expect in October and November…
Our October Dinner Meeting will feature presentations from local staffing firms and a discussion
panel of top Houston business leaders (to be announced on the website) who will address how
the economic impacts are affecting their business decisions today. We'll be listening closely to
how they plan to prepare for the future. I look forward to topics of the current state of the Gulf's
labor market and forecasted material needs.
At our November Dinner Meeting Kristina Cahill, Report on Business® Analyst at the Institute for
Supply Management, the famous "ROB Report", will discuss her insights into current and
forecasted national economic news. Our dinner presentation will be delivered by Mr. Norbert Ore,
Director of Strategic Research, who will continue the discussion on the national economy and
Houston's role and involvement.
Thanks again and keep checking out our website and stopping by the newsletter.
Best Regards,
Pat Goodrum, C.P.M.

PREMEETING TRAINING OPPORTUNITY (from 5:00 to 5:50 PM)
Contingent Workforce Availability in the Tight Houston Economy
Contingent work arrangements allow firms to maximize workforce flexibility when
major construction efforts, maintenance activities, or simply seasonal variation in
need require significant shifts in personnel levels over short periods of time. The
Houston region has relied on strong contingent workforce availability for many
years. However, strong economic growth throughout Texas has increased the
need for this labor source significantly and we are seeing shortages of both basic
and skilled labor.
Pilar Fanaselle, from Link Staffing Services, will discuss current concerns in this
area and review what the industry is doing to respond to these shortages.
DINNER MEETING DISCUSSIONS (from 6:00 to 8:00 PM)
Impacts of the Houston Economic Expansion on Supply Chain
Supply Chain activities have been significantly impacted by materials and labor
cost increases as the Houston economy has continued its strong recovery from the
recent recession. Highly effective organizations are taking action to reduce
the impacts of the price increases and associated shortages in supply.
Key leaders from two industries in the Houston area will share the podium to relay
their views on our strong economy, its impact on their companies, and the actions
they are taking as a result.
