Director’s
Foreword
It is my pleasure, on behalf of all Governors and
staﬀ associated with the South West College, to
introduce the 2014-15 Part-Time College
Prospectus.
The College oﬀers a wide range of part-time
curriculum including university access courses,
upskilling and reskilling for those employed in
industry and a host of recreational classes.
In this last year, the staﬀ and students have
achieved the highest accolades possible across
the curriculum areas of FE, Work Based
Learning and Higher Education in three major
external Quality Reviews carried out by the
Education and Training Inspectorate and the
Quality Assurance Authority. This level of
achievement is unique in Northern Ireland and
only 3.5% of the 400 colleges in the UK have
achieved Grade 1
– Outstanding status.
SWC students continue to achieve at national,
international and global competitions and their
skills and work ethics are exemplary.
Government now recognises the particular
need for a comprehensive part-time regional
degree oﬀer to facilitate industry regeneration
and provide opportunities for those in industry
to up-skill and meet future demands. In these
aspects, South West College leads the way with
a unique blend of Fast-Track Foundation
Degrees, ﬂexible Blended and Virtual Learning
courses, Higher Level Apprenticeships and is
the only NI STEM Assured College. Over one
thousand Higher Education places are
available, providing a local and aﬀordable
opportunity
for the community of the
South West region. These places are
linked to degree courses in Queen’s University
or University of Ulster and provide the
knowledge and skills required by the emerging
knowledge economy.

Unique Learner Number (ULN):
Whilst at the College, you will be issued with a
Unique Learner Number (ULN). The ULN is a
personal 10 digit number which will remain
with you throughout your life, similar to your
National Insurance (NI) Number. Like your
National Insurance Number your ULN will be
protected and only used for the purpose that
it is intended for. It will only be used to pull
together your educational experiences and
outcomes, enable you to view your learner
record online and be used by government
agencies who have responsibilities for
education. For further information please

It’s oﬃcial! SWC is “outstanding”
The Education and Training Inspectorate
(ETI) has oﬃcially declared South West
College as a Grade 1 College. The College
is the only Regional College in Northern
Ireland to achieve this accolade ranking it
among the top 4 colleges within the 350
across the UK. This outstanding
achievement is the result of a two week
general inspection of Teaching and
Learning practices at the college.
Minister for Employment and Learning Dr
Stephen Farry said: “I welcome the outcome
of this inspection, and I congratulate the
management and staﬀ at the College on
their excellent achievement. The report
underlines the innovative and very high
standard of the teaching and learning
provided by South West College, leading to
valuable progression for a wide variety of
learners. Our local Further Education
colleges play a key part in ensuring our
people have the skills they need to fulﬁl their
potential, get into work, stay in work and
contribute to our economic recovery.

The report also conﬁrms the eﬀective and
strong links that the College has with
employers in its area.”
Mr Malachy McAleer, Director said; “I am so
proud of our staﬀ and students. The
Inspectorate was enthralled by the warmth,
commitment and professionalism of staﬀ;
and by the decorum, manners and
friendliness of our students”.
He added that the ﬁnal report will be a
‘delight to read’, but some key highlights
include; “Over 95% of student satisfaction
rating across a range of indicators – from a
sample of 1000 students; The performances
of staﬀ and students on each of the ﬁve
campuses – Cookstown, Dungannon,
Fairview, Killyhevlin and Omagh – were
equally outstanding; and the fact that the
Inspectorate acknowledged the obvious staﬀ
emphasis on College values and how they
impacted on daily life”.

Body, I wish to extend my warmest
congratulations to all college staﬀ on this
outstanding achievement”.
This achievement brings to three the
number of outstanding achievements the
College has received in this academic year.
In November 2013 the college achieved the
‘Highest Degree of Conﬁdence in Higher
Education’ as a result of a QAA Inspection.
Indeed this inspection recommended that
four speciﬁc areas would be disseminated
across the sector as good practice. In
January the College achieved the ETI “Highest
Degree of Conﬁdence” in Quality &
Improvement Planning for the third
consecutive year.

courses. Please contact admissions for an
enrolment form, then simply complete the
form and post it to the relevant College

this prospectus), enclosing payment for the
course. Postal enrolment will require
payment by cheque, credit card, debit card or
postal order.

It is important to note that enrolments are
accepted on a ‘ﬁrst come ﬁrst served’ basis
and many courses ﬁll up quickly.

Enrolment may be taken after the main enrolment
period only if places are still available.
AGE LIMIT
Students must be 16 years of age on or before 1st
July 2014 to enrol on any of the courses in the
South West College.
ALL APPLICANTS WELCoME
The College welcomes applications from mature
students, students with qualiﬁcations from other
countries and those seeking to gain qualiﬁcations.
The standard entry requirement for many courses
may be waived if alternative qualiﬁcations or
experience can be oﬀered. For further information
on fees for overseas students, please contact the
Admissions Oﬃce at the relevant Campus.

FINANCIAL GUIDE TO FEES
1. Course Fees are listed in the course
timetable provided.
2. Payment – Course fees MUST be paid
before the ﬁrst session of the course
and can be made by Cash, Credit Card,
Debit Card, Cheque, Postal order or
speciﬁc cases by direct debit.
HAVING DIFFICULTy PAyING FEES?
Hardship Funds may be available to assist
students (with travel, course materials and
other expenses) who are experiencing
ﬁnancial hardship. In order to qualify for
Hardship Funds you must be over 18 and
enrolled as a student of the College. For
further ﬁnancial details and an application
form (forms available from mid-September
2014), please contact Student Services at
the relevant Campus for further
information.
3. Further Education Tuition Fees
Students paying FE tuition fees less than
£150 – Full payment must be made at time
of enrolment.
Further Education Fees by Direct Debit
Students paying FE tuition fees of £150 or
more can pay in 4 equal instalments: with the
ﬁrst instalment due at the time of enrolment,
in the form of Cash, Cheque or Credit Card
and the balance due in 3 further instalments
to be collected by direct debit on 28
November 2014, 30 January 2015, and 27
March 2015.
In the event of the above presenting hardship
to the student, the College will endeavour to
provide a mutual ﬂexible arrangement.
ELB Grants
Some students may be entitled to the ELB grant
which has a maximum value of £465.00. These
students must apply for the grant through the
Education and Library Board and must pay the
College the relevant tuition fee by 4 equal
instalments as above. If the student is awarded
the grant, the College will invoice the Board for
the amount allocated and a refund will be
generated to the student on receipt of a copy of
the letter stating the conﬁrmation from the ELB.
Additional Costs
Many courses have additional costs for.
exams, registration with or membership of
professional bodies, course materials (e.g.
beauty/hairdressing kits, computer discs, art
materials, ﬂowers) and/or books etc. This
information is as accurate as possible at the
time of going to press but may be subject to
change as these costs are outside the
College’s control. For all accredited Part-Time
Courses, the Examination/Registrations fee
will be payable at enrolment.
4. Courses that last for more than one
year
Fees payable at enrolment apply to year 1
only. Candidates must re-enrol and pay
relevant fees for any further year(s) of study
at the start of each academic year.
5. Payment of Fees by Employer/Sponsor
If your employer is paying your course
and/or exam fees, a letter from your
employer or a completed SWC Employer
Fee Conﬁrmation Form must accompany
your enrolment form, stating their
commitment to pay such fees and giving a
name and address for invoicing purposes.
6. Please Note
That tuition fees are advertised on a yearly
basis for courses of two or more year’s
duration.
refunds Policy
Once the appropriate fees have been paid
and a student has been accepted on a course
normally a refund will not be issued unless the
course is cancelled by the College. The
following exceptions shall apply:
Exceptions:
• When a student is prevented by a serious
medical condition from attending a course
and as a result will be unable to resume
studies in a future academic period, then if
this can be veriﬁed by a doctor’s certiﬁcate,
a refund will be considered.
• If, due to unforeseen personal
circumstances a student is unable to
complete their current course of study, they
may be permitted to transfer their
enrolment to the next appropriate
academic period. Alternatively, the College
will consider issuing a credit note, which
may be used for future enrolments within
the College.
An administration fee of £20 will be
charged per refund generated. (* All
requests for refunds should be made in
writing and sent to the Finance oﬃcer
at South West College, Mountjoy road,
omagh, for consideration.)
Reduced Fees
A 50% reduction in fees may be allowed to students participating on selected vocational courses that meet residency requirements and fall into any of
the following categories. Evidence required is given against each category below:

English for Speakers of
Other Languages (ESOL)
The ESOL programmes at SWC are speciﬁcally for anyone
living in Northern Ireland whose ﬁrst language is not English.
These courses are part-time (2 or 3 hours per week) and are oﬀered in the morning,
afternoon and evenings. The courses are oﬀered at various levels and will help
individuals improve their English speaking, listening, reading and writing.
To sign up to the ESOL programme, it is important that students attend one of the assessment and
enrolment sessions in August. Dates will be conﬁrmed on the college website where information is
translated in a variety of languages: www.swc.ac.uk/esol or further information can be provided by
contacting reception at each College campus, Tel: 0845 603 1881
Important information for the registration process:
• Candidates must complete a short assessment to identify the most suitable level of course.
• Candidates should bring evidence of any previous ESOL qualiﬁcations to enable assignment
criteria. Lecturers will discuss the type of qualiﬁcation sought and enrol each candidate onto the
most suitable programme for them.
• It is important that candidates bring their passport or European ID at the time of enrolment

Undertaking a course at South West
College is about more than simply turning
up to class, it’s about making new friends,
taking on new challenges and developing
new areas of interest and skills. To enable
students to fully reach their potential,
socially and academically, the College
oﬀers a comprehensive Student Support
Service.
The Student Services team is set up to help
students deal with any issues or concerns they
may have in relation to their studies or any
other social or personal issues. The Support
Services team is available at each Campus and
are highly experienced, friendly and
supportive. The team is able to assist with a
variety of supports such as; ﬁnancial
assistance, careers advice, learning support,
counselling etc.

Each campus has a dedicated careers
professional who provides guidance and
information for all prospective students. This

Membership of the oﬃcial Student Union is
open to all students of the College. It is
aﬃliated to the NUS/USI who represents all
student unions in Northern Ireland. The

e.g. the Soccer Academy and the GAA

Personal development can make a big
impact on your future career
It may be that you already have a great deal
of knowledge of your profession and are
looking to formalise that knowledge into a
qualiﬁcation, or it may be that on leaving
school you are not sure that a full honours
degree is for you. Whatever your personal
situation, there are several reasons why you
might opt for a foundation degree or a
professional development course at South
West College:

It’s on your door step - sometimes the
idea of pushing yourself further can seem
daunting; a foundation degree or
professional development course may
oﬀer a more accessible stepping stone.
You will be able to study at your own pace
and ﬁt it around employment and family
commitments. Don’t underestimate
yourself, formal qualiﬁcations are not
always necessary for entry. An individual's
relevant experience, achievements and
motivation to undertake the programme
will all be taken into account as well.
It’s not that expensive! - for many
people taking a break from earning is a
decision they are simply not in a position
to take, and some would rather maintain
ﬁnancial independence than give up
work in order to continue their studies.

employability skills in mind and are

This ensures that they meet current
employment needs. Therefore, on
completion of one of these courses you
have a qualiﬁcation and a range of skills

skills are particularly useful if you are
looking to become a higher level
technician or associate professional such
as a legal executive, marketing consultant
or personnel oﬃcer.
It's a great place to start - once you've
started you may ﬁnd yourself wondering
why you hadn't thought about taking
qualiﬁcations before. It’s the getting
started part that is the hardest. Once you
are in you will ﬁnd a new network of
friends, learn skills that will challenge and
reward you and get a new sense of
conﬁdence.
Understanding foundation degrees
A foundation degree is a degree level
qualiﬁcation which combines academic study
with work place learning. Designed in
association with employers, they are
qualiﬁcations to equip people with the
relevant skills, knowledge and understanding
to achieve academic results as well as
improve performance and productivity in the
work place.
Foundation degrees focus on a particular job
or profession. They are intended to increase
the professional and technical skills of current
or potential staﬀ within a profession, or
intending to go into that profession. A
foundation degree is the equivalent of two
thirds of a full honours degree and is a fully
ﬂexible qualiﬁcation allowing students to
study part-time or full-time to ﬁt their lifestyle.
A full-time foundation degree will take two
years to complete, and part-time courses will
normally take 3 years. However, at South
West College a unique fast-track option is also
available part-time over 2 years (2 summer
semesters included). Completing an honours
degree following on from a foundation
degree will normally take one extra year.
