The College offers a wide range of part-time curriculum including university access courses, upskilling and reskilling for those employed in industry and a host of recreational classes. SWC students continue to achieve at national, international and global competitions and their skills and work ethics are exemplary. Government now recognises the particular need for a comprehensive part-time regional degree offer to facilitate industry regeneration and provide opportunities for those in industry to up-skill and meet future demands. In these aspects, South West College leads the way with a unique blend of Fast-Track Foundation Degrees, flexible Blended and Virtual Learning courses, Higher Level Apprenticeships and is the only NI STEM Assured College. SWC is “outstanding” The Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) has officially declared South West College as a Grade 1 College. The College is the only Regional College in Northern Ireland to achieve this accolade ranking it among the top 4 colleges within the 350 across the UK. This outstanding achievement is the result of a two week general inspection of Teaching and Learning practices at the college. Minister for Employment and Learning Dr Stephen Farry said: “I welcome the outcome of this inspection, and I congratulate the management and staff at the College on their excellent achievement. The report underlines the innovative and very high standard of the teaching and learning provided by South West College, leading to valuable progression for a wide variety of learners. Our local Further Education colleges play a key part in ensuring our people have the skills they need to fulfil their potential, get into work, stay in work and contribute to our economic recovery. #outstanding 4 The report also confirms the effective and strong links that the College has with employers in its area.” Mr Malachy McAleer, Director said; “I am so proud of our staff and students. The Inspectorate was enthralled by the warmth, commitment and professionalism of staff; and by the decorum, manners and friendliness of our students”. He added that the final report will be a ‘delight to read’, but some key highlights include; “Over 95% of student satisfaction rating across a range of indicators – from a sample of 1000 students; The performances of staff and students on each of the five campuses – Cookstown, Dungannon, Fairview, Killyhevlin and Omagh – were equally outstanding; and the fact that the Inspectorate acknowledged the obvious staff emphasis on College values and how they impacted on daily life”. Joe Martin, Chairman SWC Board of Governors said; “On behalf of the Governing Body, I wish to extend my warmest congratulations to all college staff on this outstanding achievement”. This achievement brings to three the number of outstanding achievements the College has received in this academic year. In November 2013 the college achieved the ‘Highest Degree of Confidence in Higher Education’ as a result of a QAA Inspection. Indeed this inspection recommended that four specific areas would be disseminated across the sector as good practice. In January the College achieved the ETI “Highest Degree of Confidence” in Quality & Improvement Planning for the third consecutive year. The full Inspectorate report is available on the ETINI website www.etini.gov.uk. This report provides a detailed insight into the quality of teaching and learning at South West College. Whatever your personal situation, there are several reasons why you might opt for a foundation degree or a professional development course at South West College: • • It’s on your door step - sometimes the idea of pushing yourself further can seem daunting; a foundation degree or professional development course may offer a more accessible stepping stone. You will be able to study at your own pace and fit it around employment and family commitments. Don’t underestimate yourself, formal qualifications are not always necessary for entry. An individual's relevant experience, achievements and motivation to undertake the programme will all be taken into account as well. It’s not that expensive! - for many people taking a break from earning is a decision they are simply not in a position to take, and some would rather maintain financial independence than give up work in order to continue their studies. #outstanding 18 A foundation degree or professional development course offers you the opportunity to do both, and in fact, continuing working whilst you study is actively encouraged. • • It will make a big impact long term! – All foundation degrees and professional development courses are designed with employability skills in mind and are developed in conjunction with employers. This ensures that they meet current employment needs. Therefore, on completion of one of these courses you have a qualification and a range of skills which are attractive to employers. These skills are particularly useful if you are looking to become a higher level technician or associate professional such as a legal executive, marketing consultant or personnel officer. It's a great place to start - once you've started you may find yourself wondering why you hadn't thought about taking qualifications before. It’s the getting started part that is the hardest. Once you are in you will find a new network of friends, learn skills that will challenge and reward you and get a new sense of confidence. Understanding foundation degrees A foundation degree is a degree level qualification which combines academic study with work place learning. Designed in association with employers, they are qualifications to equip people with the relevant skills, knowledge and understanding to achieve academic results as well as improve performance and productivity in the work place. Foundation degrees focus on a particular job or profession. They are intended to increase the professional and technical skills of current or potential staff within a profession, or intending to go into that profession. A foundation degree is the equivalent of two thirds of a full honours degree and is a fully flexible qualification allowing students to study part-time or full-time to fit their lifestyle. A full-time foundation degree will take two years to complete, and part-time courses will normally take 3 years. However, at South West College a unique fast-track option is also available part-time over 2 years (2 summer semesters included). Completing an honours degree following on from a foundation degree will normally take one extra year. the SWC higher education focus Foundation Degrees provide industrial skills that employers are actually seeking “As our economy, emerges from this deep and long recession, employers are focussing, more and more, on key employability skills. Gone are the days, when employers could enjoy the luxury of extensive in-house training for new staff. The Foundation Degree, with the excellent blend of the academic and the vocational, provides a potential employer with the readymade skills required to be effective and productive from day one! The South West College, through the Industrial Advisory Boards, encourages employers to be directly involved in the design and development of the curriculum content for the foundation degrees, thus ensuring that the training is relevant to meet their employment needs. A measure of the success of the Foundation Degree Programme has been the increasing trend by employers, who have given work placement experience to college students, to seek to retain those students in full-time employment after graduation.” William Young Industrial Liaison Officer South West College 19 Enniskillen Campus Part-time Prospectus 2014-15 money matters THE LOW COST FACTS ABOUT STUDYING AT SWC! South West College operates an Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) process to acknowledge unaccredited learning experiences. APEL is a process through which the learning students have gained from experience can be counted. This process relates to prior learning which has been done by students which has not already been formally assessed. This includes prior learning gained through communitybased learning, workplace learning and training, continuing professional development and independent learning. #outstanding 20 APEL can help students to: • • Get a place on an appropriate Foundation Degree at a college if you don’t have the normal entry qualifications but can show that you have the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding. Gain credit towards modules of a Foundation Degree so as to shorten the normal period of learning by showing that you already have the knowledge, skills and understanding needed for particular parts of the programme or qualification (e.g. units or modules). Who is APEL for? • • • Individuals in the workplace looking for recognised credit for entry to an academic programme at higher education level. Learners who may have exited a higher education programme prior to completion or the receipt of credit and who wish to count that learning towards another award. Learners who wish to ‘top-up’ an existing qualification.
