Introduction
Over the past three decades plantings of exotic species of Acacia in Vietnam have increased markedly, and it is anticipated
that such plantings will continue to expand. Previous surveys have revealed that these species are susceptible to a range of
pests and diseases, already present in Vietnam. Exotic pests and diseases also pose serious threats. Comprehensive
surveillance and a database of pest and disease records are critical to producing pest lists, detecting incursions, and
managing outbreaks of pests and diseases.
Methods
- Field observations were carried out in 2012 and 2013 in Acacia plantations in all 9 ecological zones of Vietnam.
- All major pests associated with Acacia plantations have been identified as far as is possible given current, scientific
knowledge.
- All insect pest specimens were deposited in Forest Protection Research Centre, Vietnamese Academy of Forest Sciences
(VAFS).
Results
From health survey conducted by Forest Protection Research Centre in 2012 and 2013 in Acacia plantations, there are 99
main insect pest species associated with Acacia auriculiformis, A. mangium and Acacia hybrid in Vietnam, with the following
orders represented: Coleoptera (29), Orthoptera (26), Lepidoptera (25), Hemiptera (15), Isoptera (2), Homoptera (1), and
Phasmida (1).
In all, 99 species are listed, some species such as:
Acanthopsyche sp., Dasychira checkiangensis,
Ericeia sp., Holotrichia sauteri, Hypomeces
squamosus, Phalera grotei, Stauropus fagi,
Pupae

Larva
Xylosandrus crassiusculus, Xystrocera festiva are

Discussion
Recently, some new insect pests of trees in acacia
plantations in Vietnam has emerged: Chlorophorus sp.,
Ericeia sp., Euwallacea fornicatus, Indarbela quadrinotata,
Phalera grotei, Sinoxylon anale, Xystrocera festiva, these
are biosecurity threats. With the current trend of
international cooperation, sharing a list of pests and
diseases of plantation trees with other countries in the
world is the responsibility of each country, including
Vietnam. Sharing information in this field will help to
effectively manage and quarantine pests and diseases on a
large scale, especially beyond the control of each country.
