Community Youth Teams Q1
Summer Newsletter 2014
Community Youth Teams (CYTs) are a partnership between Sheffield Futures,
Sheffield City Council, South Yorkshire Police and specialist health staff.
We work with 8 - 19 year olds, helping them to improve their lives and make better
choices.
News From the Editor
As the city turned yellow for the Grande Depart of the Tour de France, CYT
staff have been busy delivering the summer holiday programme. Young people are
keeping busy and engaging in a wide range of activities out and about and in youth
centres.
Plus celebrations are in order as CYT win at the Regional & National
Sportivate awards as young people from across the city get ‘Boxing Clever’ a noncontact boxing programme delivered by the Amateur Boxing Association in partnership
with Community Youth Team staff. Young people’s commitment to the project contributed
to the ABA being voted the Regional project winner! Young participant Najmul
Kahar's enthusiasm and mature attitude didn't go unnoticed either as he was voted one
of the top three to take part nationally. Well done to all involved!

Spotlight on Performance...
First time entrants to the criminal justice system have seen a slight increase
and analysis work is ongoing to examine the reasons for this, together with
the effect of prevention referrals and engagement with Community Youth
Team interventions.
Since April this year, CYT Prevention staff have worked with 271 young
people at risk of offending or anti-social behaviour. At the end of July
2014, the percentage of young people not engaged in education,
employment or training in Sheffield was 7.3%, meaning Sheffield has met its
target and has once again improved on the figures from the same time in
2013.

Introductory session - Woodland Walk Exploring Wincobank Hill
1 - Woodland Fire Safety – learning how
to create and extinguish woodland fires in
a safe way. Cooking food safely over a
fire.
2 - Basic film production and editing –
creating a short piece of film using a
digital camera and explore video editing
using software.
3 - Basic Blacksmithing – learning how
work with hot metal using an hammer &
anvil, bellows and a charcoal fire.
4 - Banner making – creating painted
banners for the Tour De France event for
public display purposes.
So far the programme has been well
attended and the young people have
thoroughly enjoyed the practical sessions
and have produced some great work
alongside increasing personal skills such
as confidence, teamwork, trust,
communication, commitment, time
keeping and creative thinking. Group
discussions about both the local heritage
in Wincobank and Tour De France have
allowed the young people to increase their
knowledge of these subjects. All in all, this
first programme is running very well and is
on target to complete August 2014.
John then heard a presentation about the
excellent work and outcomes achieved by
CYT, before visiting the West Team at
Sharrow, hosted by CYT West Team
Manager, Geoff Farrimond.
Geoff said “John was really keen to
understand how the team works and how
we link and work effectively with the other
agencies based on the Sharrow site. He
was particularly interested and pleased
to hear about the successful impact

that he had visited and hopefully gained a
more complete insight into the work of the
CYT teams”
Geoff described the variety of multiagency work that takes place between
CYT and partners and the strong local
links that enable CYT to tailor services to
meet the needs of the area. The visit
gave John a sound insight into the work of
CYT and the strength of partnership
working to support positive outcomes for
young people in Sheffield.
And Finally...
CYT Hi5’s organised a fundraising evening to raise money to buy some much needed new
equipment to enable the young people to do some activities over the summer.
The group cycled the Tour De France stage 2 route on exercise bikes on the 3rd of July. They raised
over £500 in sponsorship! Supporters of the Hi5s say a huge thank you to everyone who gave so
generously.
