Scottsdale Middle School Hosts Anti-Bullying
Rally with Cartoon Network, Cox Arizona
WHEN:
Tuesday, October 21 at 8:45 a.m.
WHERE:
Mohave Middle School Gymnasium: 8490 E. Jackrabbit Road, Scottsdale 85250
WHAT:
Cox Communications and Scottsdale Unified School District’s Mohave Middle School is
joining Cartoon Network’s “Stop Bullying: Speak Up” campaign which helps raise awareness, build
partnerships and empower young people to speak up against bullying.
The anti-bullying rally will include honest discussion about teen experiences with cyberbullying
including what to do when it happens, and how to minimize it. A student panel discussion will include
Mohave Middle School students moderated by Don Logan, former director of the City of Scottsdale’s
Office of Diversity and Dialogue.
Students will also learn about the results of the 2014 Cox Take Charge survey which uncovers the way
Arizona teens are impacted by bullying on the Internet. Highlights from the survey include:
 36 percent of Arizona teens have fallen victim to cyberbullying (a 6 percent increase over the
national average)
o Only 38 percent of teen victims report bullying to an adult
 Nearly 50 percent of teens have cleared search history files to hide things from their parents
 The average Arizona teen spends nearly 6 hours on the Internet daily
Mohave Middle School students will also practice their PAWS – to Practice respect, Accept
responsibility, Work together and know that Safety matters. Additionally, students have been taught to
respond to disrespect from others by telling that person to stop, to walk away, and to talk to an adult.
Mohave’s Stop, Walk and Talk campaign is a natural fit with the Cartoon Network’s “Stop Bullying:
Speak Up” campaign.
