Cabrillo National Monument, San Diego’s Ocean Gateway & National Park The Cabrillo National Monument: a 100 year old legacy of exploration continues! The Cabrillo National Monument Foundation, proud stewards since 1956, invites you to experience and help preserve the natural and historical wonders of San Diego’s own National Park. It is through the generosity of Donor contributions that the Foundation has been able to support the operation of the CNM for the past 58 years. We look forward to the next 100 years with determination, hope and excitement. Did you know… CNM hosted over 800,000 visitors from across the country and around the world in 2014. Enhancing visitor experience is a high priority. Wish list: Audio tours, updated wayside displays / exhibits, technology upgrades featuring video and web cast, educational, historical and oral history archive opportunities, Cabrillo Journal publication semi-annually. 4077 students from Title I, low income schools were provided transportation and educational experience this year. Some saw the ocean for the first time. In 2014 over 21,000 San Diego school age students receive education enrichment at Cabrillo. Wish list: Create a traveling exhibit The intertidal program at Cabrillo named “TPERP” (Tide Pool, Education, Research and Preservation) is home to Southern California's best intertidal habitat. Wish list: Intertidal identification handouts and supplies. CNM’s Volunteer Program (over 400 this year) received a prestigious National Hertzog award. Wish list: Volunteer safety, education and appreciation materials. The original 1800s Old Point Loma Lighthouse has been lovingly restored and underwent a seismic retrofit in 2014. The lenses are still cleaned and polished by hand. Several books have been published by CNMF to document the illuminating history. Wish list: The basement plans are to house sewing machines, miscellaneous items and fabrics needed for the creation and continuation of the period dress used for living history. Please help enhance the programs, activities and preservation of Cabrillo National Monument. Over Did you know… CNM houses 21 well preserved original military fortification bunkers. One 19th Coast auxiliary bunker has authentic equipment and is open the last Saturday of each month to Park visitors. Wish List: Military exhibit upgrades that are authentic and representative of this important aspect of Cabrillo history and the surrounding community. CNM has one of the best preserved native plant communities in Southern California. It takes diligent, hands on work from volunteers and staff to remove non-native vegetation. We use our own greenhouse to raise/grow plants native to the Pt Loma peninsula. Wish list: Tools, materials, multi-media appl., developing native plant walks & materials CNM has unique wildlife found nowhere else in urban San Diego. CNM monitors peregrine falcon nest (see link to video below), studies unique migratory bird population found on the Pt Loma peninsula and studies native pollinators (Mexican long-nosed bat). Wish list: Technology, editing and sound equipment, software and additional nest cams. Several options: one on one or with a group, audio or web based, historical, educational and even personalized programs.
