Abundant
Life
Center
April 8– April 21, 2014
The Abundant Life Center has really shaped up since the last
issue of the Hard Hat Headlines. All appliances have been
received, installed and connected. The local building
inspector completed his inspection on March 31st and has
issued our temporary occupancy permit, which was a critical
piece we needed in order to move forward with the licensure

and the main kitchen, which was completed by the
Department of Agriculture. We are happy to report that those
inspections went well and every area passed.
2.
The PA Department of Health, Life Safety Division, began to
inspect the building on April 1st and 2nd, and a number of
issues were discovered during the survey. In order for us to
pass the Life Safety inspection, we will need to make some
changes before the inspectors return to complete their
inspection. Dck will have to ensure that the necessary work is
completed and then Life Safety will be invited back to finish
their survey. This survey is a critical piece and must be
successfully completed prior to being able to move in.
Installation of the audio visual equipment is still in progress.

between April 14th and 28th. Televisions for the building still
need to be installed and connected in all areas of the building.
Maintenance Staff is undergoing orientation and training for
all of the new equipment in the building, such as pool
equipment, lighting controls, mechanical equipment, etc.
Now that final cleaning is nearly complete, exterior window
cleaning will soon take place. Exterior grading and topsoil
will still need to be completed in order to hydro seed the areas
requiring grass prior to the move.
3.
Skilled Nursing

After 2 ½ years of construction, we can safely say that
skilled nursing is just about complete—now that
appliances have been installed, inspections are complete
and the area has been cleaned. The exterior handrail has
also been installed.

be accessible to residents 24 hours a day, 7
days a week.

Shared Support
(This is the part of the building that will house the main
kitchen, central supply and other support services.)

The shared support section of the building is still in
need of finish painting as well as numerous smaller
issues. The receptionist area is being completed and
countertops and final wiring are being installed. The
main kitchen and Bistro only need small things such as
Pepsi machines and coffee brewers. Final cleaning is in
process in these areas as well.

the casework and equipment has been installed.

Personal Care/Community Center

There is still a considerable amount of finish work that
needs to be complete in these areas. Workers need to
complete trim work and final painting along Main
Street. Final cleaning is in process throughout these
areas as well. Stained glass windows in the Chapel are
being installed, and installation of audio visual
equipment is being completed in the Chapel and
Scholl Conference Center.

Independent Living

All appliances for the independent living apartments
have been received and installed. Punch lists are
nearly complete. The company completing the final
cleaning is also making its way through the
independent living building.

. Line striping and appropriate signage were
installed in the independent living garage.

Though most of the major activities are complete along South Green Lane, there is still work that needs to
be done in the area. Much of this activity will vary due to weather conditions and scheduling with utility
companies. For safety reasons, please continue to avoid this area at all costs.
Reminder:
South Green Lane is experiencing heavy construction traffic so please avoid that area. Pedestrian and
motorized scooter traffic is prohibited from Luther Court north towards Culvert Street. These two items
will help both with your safety and the safety of the construction workers.
Safety Alert:
Thank you for your continued patience and alertness at Burgess Drive with the ongoing deliveries.
Dedication Ceremony
As you have heard, the Dedication Ceremony for the new Abundant Life Center will be on Wednesday, May
14th. The ceremony will be held in the new Scholl Conference Center, and seating will be limited to
approximately 250 people. Due to the limited seating capacity, attendance to the event in Scholl Conference
Center will be by invitation only. However, the Ceremony will be broadcast live over channel 38/500. Action
team members will be hosting gatherings in a number of areas across campus. Those not invited to attend in
Scholl Conference Center will be encouraged to gather with others and watch the event on Channel 38/500,
and then, when the ceremony is over, come to the new building, tour and enjoy refreshments.
More information about the Dedication Ceremony will be forthcoming, so stay tuned.
Moving Day/Week
Healthcare Relocations spent March 24th and 25th on campus. On March 24th they spent the day doing an
inventory of all that is scheduled to move. Part of their time was spent determining how successful we’ve
been at purging items unnecessary for the new building. They were pleased at our progress but encouraged us
to continue purging. On March 25th we learned a little more about how the residents will be moved. We
completed a mock move and decided that we will wheel the residents out the Kidd (garden entrance) door in
Olde Main and into the front door of the Abundant Life Center. More information will be shared as we have
it—stay tuned.

"Journey To Our New Home"
Our Vision
A community of people creating a home that fosters gracious living;
a home where elders direct their own lives
and we partner with them in their pursuit of abundant life.

We value person-centered care, focusing first on each individual’s unique personality
and how they wish to live each day.

We value residents, families, volunteers and staff as integral team members working
together to create a fulfilling and meaningful life for all.

We value self-led teams that decide among themselves the most appropriate individual
and team responses to the needs and desires of our residents.

We value “home” as relating to each individual heart’s desire and strive to enable the
choices and quality of life residents enjoyed in their own homes. Each person is
respected as an individual and shares in decision making.

We value community, where members live, work and socialize; where they are actively
engaged and determine for themselves how to give and receive within their friendships,
household, neighborhood, city, state and country.

We value growth in training (skills) and education (knowledge) as both means and ends.
By deeply investing in staff, volunteer, resident, and family growth, we further
community, enhance possibilities of individual-fulfillment and set an implicit standard
that guides our behavior as an organization.

We value the resident and place him/her at the center of all we do.

We value Servant Leadership.

Pool Information
Many of you have been asking for details about the operations of the pool. Here are what the plans are to date
for residents:
The pool will be open to residents Monday – Friday, from 7:00 am – 12:00 pm, and 1:00 pm – 5:15 pm when
Fitness & Wellness Staff is present. Residents will be able to use the pool any time the Fitness & Wellness
Center is open, as long as they have a buddy with them. The buddy does not have to swim with the resident,
but they do have be in the pool area for safety reasons. This way, if something happens to a resident in the
pool, they will be able to activate a SARA pendant for assistance. We expect to offer aquatics classes that will
be lead by one of our Exercise Specialists, during times that are most convenient for residents, probably late
mornings or early afternoons. We will also offer other free swim times, where one of our Exercise Specialists
is available for activities such as volleyball or basketball. The new facility has locker rooms and showers for
your convenience. All pool-users will be responsible for providing their own towel.
Household Coordinator Positions Posted
The Household Coordinator position was posted on April 2. This posting will be up until April 9th. Interested
individuals are encouraged to complete an internal application and submit it to Renee Kerr in Human
Resources. Interviews for the position are expected to commence on Thursday, April 10th.
Those candidates who do not have previous supervisory experience will become Household Coordinators In
Training. This training program is a yearlong training program designed to help the individual be successful in
their new role.
Household Basics Training Scheduled
Megan Hannan our Action Pact guide will be with us on May 28th and 29th to conduct Household Basics
training. This day long training will afford those who are working in the households to receive training in one
of our new households. The training will take us through a “day in the life” of a household. Steering team
members will attend both days, so that the training can be replicated as we move forward. Stay tuned for more
information.
