of federal universities in the country cannot be left to the
Federal Government alone, urging the relevant
stakeholders to rally round and contribute their quota.
Prof. Ambali made this submission last Friday

hostel project executed by the Academic Multipurpose
Co-operative Society of the University.

Unilorin Students Union honours Belgore
...as SAN extols ex-CJN’s virtues
By Olusegun Mokuolu
A
Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Dr. Aliyu Alarape Salman,
has described the former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN),
Justice S. M. A. Belgore, as an epitome of good leadership and
a living proof that the country has the capacity to produce good leaders
who are worthy of emulation.
Dr. Salman made this submission at the University of Ilorin
Auditorium last Monday (March 31, 2014) while delivering a keynote
lecture at the Second Youth Leadership Summit and Journal
Launching organised by the University Students Union in honour of
the erudite jurist.
Speaking on the topic, “I am young, I am the future”, the
senior lawyer said, “Presently today, the world is going astray and is in
disarray, especially our dear country, Nigeria. But there are still some
exemplary individuals, who are worth imitating; they serve as
stimulants towards good leadership. Undisputably, Justice Alpha
Belgore is one”.
The SAN noted that the growth of any community rested on
the young people, who he described as “those vigorous and creative
individuals possessing that awe of wonder and enthusiasm.” He
opined that the youth are “not just the future but our hope to
reinvigorate the world, to correct the blunders of the past generations.”

Ambali hails Academic Coop Society on hostel project
(Contd. from front page)
The Vice-Chancellor, who was accompanied to
the commissioning by all the Principal Officers of the
University, noted that the building of the hostel by the
Co-operative Society would go a long way in easing the
accommodation problem facing students on campus.
Prof. Ambali told the society, “What you have
demonstrated is a clear example of good leadership that
is abundant in the University. This University is better
by far because of people like you. I often say that it is the
staff and students of the University of Ilorin that are the
true better by far. You cannot readily find the calibre of
staff this University is blessed with elsewhere.”
The Vice-Chancellor noted that while staff
unions elsewhere are busy taking the managements of
their institutions to court, those of the University of
Ilorin have been working hard to uplift the University.
Commending the quality of the hostel building
and the facilities provided, Prof. Ambali said that the
lecturers have proven that they really know the needs of
their students. He described the hostel environment as
tidy and conducive.
The Vice-Chancellor then called on other cooperative societies in the University to emulate the
Academic Multipurpose Co-operative Society when
embarking on any building project. He assured that the
kind of support and assistance enjoyed by the Society
would be extended to other Co-operative Societies.
Prof. Ambali also commended the Society for
making history and for demonstrating that Nigeria can
match any country in the world when it comes to
prudence and accountability. “Continue the good work,
Nigeria needs people like you”, he said.
In his address, the President of the Academic
Multipurpose Co-operative Society, Prof Noah Yusuf,
disclosed that the Society embarked on the hostel
project as part of its contribution towards tackling the
accommodation problem facing students of the
University. He said the project would also boost the
financial base of the Society.
Prof. Yusuf described the project as a step
towards forging effective co-operation between the
University management and its staff members through
partnership in the construction of the hostel. He said that
the project would serve as a model for other cooperative societies in the University to advance
corporate social responsibility, investment drive and
management-staff co-operation.
Disclosing that the hostel project cost the
Society
a total of N62,693,727, the President
commended the University management for the
interest-free loan of N40 million it gave the society.
Prof. Yusuf said, “I would like to seize this
opportunity to encourage the incoming management of
our Society to take good care of our common property
through proper maintenance. To this end, we are
suggesting the composition of a Hostel Maintenance
Committee by the management.”
The President also encouraged members of the
Society to give suggestions to the management on how
best to improve on the maintenance and general
administration of the hostel”.
The Chairman of the University of Ilorin Staff
Multipurpose Co-operative Union, Prof. R. W.
Omotoye, who was also a member of the hostel
Building Committee, congratulated the Society and
thanked the leadership for doing a good job.
Prof. Omotoye also commended the vision of
the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU),
Unilorin Branch, for its foresight in establishing the
Academic Multipurpose Co-operative Society.
Members of the Building Committee included:
Prof. N. Yusuf, Chairman; Dr. O. O. Dosumu,
Secretary; Mrs. B. O. Akinfenwa, Dr. J. A. Aweda, Dr.
Abdul Oba-Yusuf, Dr. M. A. Ayanshola and Dr. T. A.
Olaniyi.

Our Students are exemplary in character and learning - VC
(Contd. from front page)
The Guest Speaker added that it is extremely
pertinent for every conscious individual, especially
parents and schools, to set up varieties of proficient
means of veritable guidance and orientation for the
youth. He also noted that the strength of the youths'
participation in the development of the nation depends
upon how well they are encouraged, mentored, guided
and supported.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion,
who is also a former Vice-Chancellor of the University
of Ilorin and Chairman, Federal Character
Commission, Prof. Shuaib Oba AbdulRaheem,
described Justice Belgore as a man “who has lived a
worthy live”.
Prof. AbdulRaheem also described the retired
jurist as an institution and an intellectual.
The former Vice-Chancellor commended the
University of Ilorin for remaining true to its name,
adding that the University is blessed with disciplined
students and a dedicated work force. He then praised the
incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu
Ambali, for efficiently piloting the affairs of the
University.
Also honoured at the Students Union
Leadership Summit were the Kwara State Governor,
Dr. AbdulFatah Ahmed and a Senior Advocate of
Nigeria, Mallam Yusuf OlaoluAli.
The governor, who was represented by his
Special Assistant on Tertiary Education, Dr. S. O. Ajayi,
restated his commitment to assisting the University of
Ilorin, his alma mater.
In his own response, Mallam Yusuf Ali, said that
he would forever cherish the award because it was done
in honour of Justice Belgore.
The senior lawyer decried the incessant strike
actions by university lecturers in the country and called
on the students to resist being locked out of school.
In his address, the Vice-Chancellor of the
University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, said
that students of the University are exemplary in
learning and character unlike what obtains in some
other institutions of learning in the country.
Prof. Ambali said, “Part of the vision of the
University has manifested in the programme of today. It
is no coincidence that while students of other
institutions may be engaged in disruptive behaviour as
we often read in the media, the students of the
University of Ilorin have always been exemplary in
radiating the beauty of “character and learning”, which
is the motto of the University.”
The Vice-Chancellor pointed out that “if the
University prides itself as the most stable University in
the country for more than a decade now, it is as a result
of the cooperation of all its stakeholders particularly the
students.”
Speaking on the honouree, Prof. Ambali
described the former Chief Justice of Nigeria as highly
reputable for his courage, intelligence, fairness and
defence of justice. He then admonished the students that
beyond honouring Belgore with the journal, they should
continue to derive inspiration from his exemplary
lifestyle and character.
In his welcome address, the Dean, StudentAffairs,
Prof. O. A. Omotesho, submitted that the launch of the
Journal, The Erudite, is a further testimony to the
intellectual maturity of the Unilorin Students Union,
noting that the message the occasion passes across is
that the students are forthright to recognise excellence
and promote scholarship.
Prof. Omotesho said, “It is an indication of the
enviable heights our students have attained. From the
empty sloganeering of “Aluta” of the years past, our
cherished students now prefer to sing “Aloha”, thereby
magnetising development to the University”.
The Students Union President, Comrade Lawal
Ahmed Abiodun, in his address, said that the Summit
was organised to prepare the youth for leadership
positions in the future. He added that the Journal creates
an opportunity for students to improve the fast dying art
of writing among the younger generation, disclosing
that about 70 percent of the articles in the Journal were
written by students of the University.
A highpoint of the occasion was the launching
of the second edition of The Erudite, an annual Journal
on Leadership and Development, published by the
Students Union in honour of Justice Belgore.
Among dignitaries who attended the occasion
were the Balogun Fulani of Ilorin, Alhaji Mohammed
Atiku Durosinlorun, who represented the Emir of
Ilorin; the Grand Khadi of Kwara State, Justice A. B.
Mohammed; the founder of Al-Hikmah University,
Alhaji AbdulRaheem Oladimeji and the University's
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. SulymanAgeAbdulkareem.

Unilorin
Water gets NAFDAC license
By Mustafa Abubakar
The National Agency for Food and Drug
Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has formally
given its seal of approval for the Unilorin Water with the
allocation of product registration numbers to the two
water brands.
With this, the University of Ilorin Water
Enterprises, producer of Unilorin table and sachet water
brands, is now free to commence the large scale
distribution of the water product anywhere outside the
University campus.
The approval was conveyed through two
separate letters from NAFDAC's Import Food &
Package Water Division, dated March 4, 2014, and
addressed to the Managing Director, University of
Ilorin Water Enterprises.
Signed by C. C. Ofuani, on behalf of NAFDAC
Director General, the letters, with reference numbers
2014/RW/0845 and 2014/LW/2141 respectively, read
in part, “I am directed to inform you that the following
products have been granted production registration
certificates: Unilorin table water 50CL & 75CL bottles
with Registration Number C1-2090 and Unilorin table
water 50CL sachet with Registration Number C12049L.”
In a chat with Unilorin Bulletin last Wednesday
(April 2, 2014), the Marketing Manager, University of
Ilorin Water Enterprises, Mr. AbdurRahman Idris, said,
“With this, we have the license to sell our products
anywhere in the country”, adding that the factory has
over 50 distributors within and outside the University
community.
Mr. Idris said, “We will be serving the
immediate environment such as Tanke, Oke-Odo and
other immediate environs of the University campus
including our sister institutions in Kwara State and
subsequently other parts of the town and the country.”
He disclosed that the factory has enough volume of
water to meet the needs of these communities.
The Manager said that the wholesale price of a
bag of sachet water is N100.00 and N300.00 and
N400.00 for the 50CL and 70CL table water
respectively. He disclosed that before the license, the
factory was producing 1000 bags of sachet water daily
as well as 200 and 250 packs of 50CL and 75CL table
water respectively, daily.
Mr. Idris said, “We shall now increase our
production to 2000 bags of sachet water and 500 packs
of both 50CL and 75CL table water every day”. He
noted that the University of Ilorin Water Enterprises is
aware of the Table Water Producers Association's
resolution, three years ago, fixing selling price of sachet
water at N10.00, adding that “Table water bought from
us can be sold at sellers' discretion. We don't have
control over that. Some sell at N10.00 per sachet while
some sell two sachets for N15.00.”
Describing the process of production, the
Marketing Manager said that the factory produces and
packages the product within a serene, clean and
hygienic environment, adding, “We have five
sedimentation tanks connected to special borehole,
Huwa-San, Sand Filter, carbon filter and four treated
water tanks.”
He added, “For the sachet water, we have filter
microns, ultraviolet sterilizer and automatic packing
machine while for the bottle water, we have micro filter,
reserve osmosis, treated water tank, ultra violet
sterilizer and washing, filling and capping machine”.
Mr. Idris, who thanked the Vice-Chancellor of
the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali,
other Principal Officers and the entire University
community for the support they have shown to the water
factory, promised not to let them down. “They have
been wonderful ambassadors of the company”, he said.
After about five years of planning, the N55
million Unilorin Water Enterprises commenced
operation last September with a promise to produce
sparkling clean water for the consumption of members
of the University community and beyond.
At a meeting of the University Senate on
September 18, 2013, the Director of Unilorin
Consultancy Services Unit, the supervisor of the
project, Prof. D. S. Ogunniyi, said that apart from its
revenue generating potential, the water produced at the
factory would also enhance the health of members of
the University community, as it would be produced
under strict hygienic conditions.

How to ensure sustainable development – Adekola
By Fatima Abubakre
The World Bank Senior Education Specialist and Task
Team Leader of the Science and Technology Post-Basic
(STEP-B) in Nigeria, Dr. Olatunde Adekola, has
underscored the vital role of science and technical
education and innovation in finding solutions to pressing
challenges of the post-2015 development agenda while
advocating a more inclusive growth plan which would
not leave out the poor especially in developing countries
like Nigeria.
Dr. Adekola said this last Monday (March 31,
2014) at the University of Ilorin, while delivering a
keynote address at a capacity building workshop on
Strengthening the Capacities of Nigerian Universities
for the Post-2015 Development Agenda, organised by
the Nigeria Sustainable Development Solutions
Network (NSDSN).
The World Bank chief said, “The world we live
in today is one of rapid societal changes, knowledge
driven economies and increasing global integration. In
such a world, better university education can help reduce
poverty and inequality, and boost economic growth in
many developing countries.”
The expert noted that “knowledge intensive
activities” is not synonymous with high tech,” pointing
out that, “assembling computers for export generates
high tech exports, but it is a low wage, unskilled, low
value added activity that will probably not lead to
national prosperity and rising standards of living.”
“On the other hand”, he said, “fish farming,
aquaculture, and tropical flower cultivation all require
knowledge intensive production processes, even though
they are traditionally classified as low tech activities.”
In his own address, the Vice-Chancellor of the
University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, said
that the University administration, under his leadership,
is solely for sustainable development, adding that
universities must build human capacities as actors in the
dispensation that is envisaged for them in global
development agenda of the years ahead.
While noting that any development that is
stripped of sustainability is counter-productive, Prof.
Ambali, who was represented on the occasion by the
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RTI), Prof. Felix Oladele,
maintained that the need for capacity building is more
urgent in the African sub-region because of its
precarious ranking in global environmental and
sustainability metrics.
The Vice-Chancellor pointed out that child
mortality rates remain high in sub-Saharan Africa due
significantly to the fact that environmental solutions
have not kept pace with healthcare-based solutions.
Prof. Ambali then charged university scholars to
“reflect on the challenges in their design and
implementation that led to the results we know,” saying,
“This is crucial in order to develop solutions that can
yield improvement in the years ahead.”
In his address, the Director of NSDSN, Prof.
Ikenna Onyido, appreciated the management of the
University of Ilorin for its support that led to the
successful hosting of the Workshop.
Prof. Onyido noted that the core objective of the
NSDSN is to support its members around the world to
play a leading role in sustainable development as
research centres, as educators and as social
entrepreneurs in solution initiatives.
Abdullahi tasks remedial students on hard work
By Precious Okeowo
S
tudents of the School of Preliminary Studies,
University of Ilorin, have been advised to
comport themselves responsibly and face their
studies squarely in order to achieve their ultimate
objectives.
The advice was given by the Director of the
School, Prof. Onimisi Abdulahi, penultimate Thursday
(March 27, 2014) during the 2014 Orientation
programme at the School Auditorium in Fufu, Ilorin

Prof. Abdullahi advised them to be of good character, be
focused and also be hard working.
Delivering the orientation lecture, the Head of
the Department of Science Education, University of
Ilorin, Prof. (Mrs.) Medinat Salman, declared that an
ideal youth must demonstrate humility, honesty,
righteousness and hard work.
Prof. (Mrs.) Salman, therefore, advised the
students to strive for excellence no matter the obstacle
they might face in their studies.

Egbewole wants pension funds insulated from corruption
By Temitope Omoniyi
A
former Dean, Faculty of Law, University of
Ilorin, Prof. AbdulWahab Egbewole has advised
governments at all levels to ensure that the
pension funds are insulated from the cankerworm of
corruption.
Professor Egbewole made the call penultimate
Thursday (March 27, 2014) while delivering a lecture at
the inauguration of the Association of Nigeria
Universities Contributory Pension Retirees
(ANUCOPER), Unilorin Chapter.
In his lecture entitled ''Pension Reforms in
Nigeria: New Wine in Old Skin'', Prof. Egbewole
identified inadequacy of data for processing of pension
and corruption on the part of the officials and the
leadership as some of the challenges facing the old
pension regime.
In his address, the Vice-Chancellor of the
University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali,
commended the retirees for the selfless service they
have rendered to the nation.
Represented by the Dean of Veterinary
Medicine, Prof. Suleiman Ambali, the ViceChancellor assured the Association of the University's
continued support.
The Chairman of the University of Ilorin
Chapter of the Association, Mr. Ibrahim Adepoju,
while delivering his speech, appealed to well-meaning
Nigerians to appeal to President Goodluck Jonathan
and the National Assembly to give assent to the new
Pension Reform Bill of 2013
A major highlight of the event was the
unveiling of the Association's Rosette by the Registrar
of the University of Ilorin, Mr. Emmanuel Obafemi,
who later decorated the dignitaries who graced the
occasion.
Law to regulate counselling profession coming soon – Adegoke
By Mubarak Oladosu
A Bill to establish the Counselling Practitioners Council
of Nigeria (CPCN) for the regulation of the counselling
profession in the country will soon be passed into law by
the NationalAssembly.
When established, the CPCN will conduct
qualifying examinations for professional counsellors
and oversee other counselling related matters in Nigeria.
The Bill was sponsored by the Counselling Association
of Nigeria (CASSON).
The National President of the of the Association,
Prof A.A. Adegoke , disclosed this at the opening
ceremony of the National Delegates Conference of the
Association held at the University of Ilorin last Friday
(April 4, 2014).
The Professor of Counsellor Education at the
University of Ilorin disclosed that the Bill had scaled the
first reading and it has been listed in the books of the
National Assembly. He appreciated Senator Ita Enang
for his contributions to the success so far attained by the
Bill and noted that the ongoing National Conference is
helpful because “taking stock after 100 years of the
country's existence is therapeutic in itself”.
Prof. Adekoke said, “The Nigerian nation and
the different ethnic nationalities need this type of
therapy at this time. This is why we are utterly surprised
that the Counselling Association of Nigeria is not
invited to the confab. We are however watching
proceedings closely.”
In his own speech on the occasion, the Deputy
Governor of Kwara State, Mr. Peter Kishra who was
represented by the Kwara State Commissioner for
Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Alhaji
Abdulwahab Opakunle, noted that the University of
Ilorin has over the years not only contributed to human
capital development but it has succeeded in handling
town and gown issues .
He noted that counselling is not only beneficial
to education and career guidance but also germane in
ensuring harmonious families, noting that when one
fails after being properly counselled, such an individual
can trace the origin of the problem.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin,
Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, who was represented on
the occasion by the Director of Academic Planning,
Prof. S.A. Kuranga, noted that the import of
professional counselling cannot be over emphasised in
contemporary Nigeria given that the youths are going
astray and the elders can also not even organise
themselves.
Prof. Ambali congratulated the Association for
the strides it has taken in actualising the Bill, which it is
sponsoring at the NationalAssembly.
The immediate past President of the
Association and Vice-Chancellor of Ibrahim Badamasi
Babangida University, Lapai, Prof. Ibrahim Kolo,
expressed appreciation to the University of Ilorin for
hosting the conference and thanked members of the
Association for attending from across the nation. He
noted that nothing gives him more joy than seeing that
the Association is thriving under the leadership of Prof.
Adegoke.
In his address, the State Chairman of the
Association, Dr. A. O. Oniye, highlighted some of the
activities of his Association in bringing counselling
services to the people and called on government to
sponsor members of his Association in public schools
to conferences, workshops and seminars.
Among those who attended the conference
were the Dean of Education, Prof. S. A. Olorundare; Dr
Mrs Arinde, who represented the Chairman of Kwara
State Teaching Service Commission; representatives of
commissioners of education from Lagos, Katsina and
Niger States.

Aluta out, Aloha in
As if you don't know, aluta is a Portuguese word that
means “struggle”. The term, Aluta Continua (the struggle
continues) was popularised by the Mozambique
Liberation Front (or FRELIMO) leader, Samora Machel,
who used it to mobilise people against the Portuguese
rule in his country. Aluta is also the title of a 1971 film
depicting that anti-colonial struggle and it gained further
prominence when Machel adopted it as an unofficial
motto after becoming the first President of Mozambique
in 1975.
The wind of aluta blew into our lexical climate in
the early 70's due to that connection. To an average
student, aluta means riot, protest, trouble or simply we no
gree. It is a battle cry that had found eloquent expression
during the heady days of Ali must go! in the late 70's.
Many students were attracted to aluta especially during
the years of military rule and some even adopted it as a
nom de guerre. Till today, aluta still fascinates some
students the same way swimming in a lagoon would
fascinate a child, a silly little child.
Aloha, however, in the Hawaiian language, is
“affection, peace, compassion andth mercy”. It has come to
be used in English since the 19 century as a form of
greeting meaning “goodbye” and “hello”. Just as Kwara
State is the “State of Harmony”, the nickname of the US
state of Hawaii is the “Aloha State”. Aloha is peace.
Fortunately at the University of Ilorin,
undoubtedly the Aloha University, there has been no
aluta, with its accompanying destruction, disruption and
even death for a decade now and it has been aloha all
through. With courage, resolve and sense of purpose, the
University community has kicked Aluta out and ushered
in Aloha, the beautiful bride.
The credit for this development belongs to the
University students who have really come of age. As the
Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Olubunmi Omotesho, said
last Monday (March 31) at the colourful Students Union
Youth Leadership Summit and Journal Launch at the
University Auditorium, our students have truly attained
enviable heights as role models for their peers. “From the
empty sloganeering of “Aluta” of the years past, our
cherished students now prefer to sing “Aloha”, thereby
magnetising development to the University”, he
remarked.
If the students are commended, they share the
credit with the University which has been forthright in
promoting staff and student welfare. As one good turn
deserves another, the single-minded commitment of the

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, and his team
to providing a conducive atmosphere for teaching and
learning has resulted in students seeing themselves as
partners-in-progress, organising summits, publishing
academic journals and celebrating excellence as we
witnessed last Monday. There would be “aluta” of course if
the University increases the school fees to about
N350,000.00 as a public University in Lagos did recently
but the better by far University would not take such a
measure, thanks to the leadership!
The Students Union programme will certainly
linger long in the memory of those who attended in it
especially with the quality of what the various dignitaries
said on the occasion. One important food for thought I took
from there was the “Clear Vision” of the Vice-Chancellor,
his address in which, among other things, he shared
Marshall Field's ten guidelines for success. Thumps up for
the University of Ilorin students!
Another Death
Though the month of March 2014 has fortunately
marched out of our lives, it left unforgettable imprints on
our psyche as an academic community. This column had
already featured the two deaths of two former Deans of Arts
that happened last month. It was the same month (on March
19), moreover, that a former Deputy Chief Imam of the
University of Ilorin and Associate Professor of
Biochemistry, Nasrudeen O. Mohammed, died in Ilorin.
Until he transferred his services to the Federal
University about a year ago, the late don was a hard working
lecturer who rose through the ranks to become a Reader and
acting Head of Biochemistry Department at the University
of Ilorin. He was well known for his simplicity, devotion,
dynamism and brilliance. Prof. Mohammed was the
Director of Academic Planning at the Federal University,
Dutsin Ma, Katsina State. He was loved by all but death
doesn't bargain. He was aged just 49. Inna liLlaahi wa innaa
ilayhi raaji'un.
Such is life. The number of the dead is increasing.
We owe ourselves a duty of waking from the Illusion. With
death, like Prof. Mohammed, we shall achieve the Ideal.
May Allah bless his soul and grant him Aljannah Firdaws.
Aloha!
