Case Study - DCD Construction, Inc Leading construction company gains benefits of ISO 9001 and BS OHSAS 18001 DCD CONSTRUCTION, INC. is a leading construction company in the Philippines. The company started as a single proprietorship on 22nd August, 1985. In 1992, it became fully incorporated and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Over 29 years, DCD Construction has grown greatly in size and success, and been involved in the design and construction of numerous infrastructure projects for both the government and private sector. It has built highways and bridges with the Department of Public Works Highways for Cebu, Masbate, and Samar provinces, installed industrial and domestic water supply systems, and built residential housing and recreational facilities for the Atlas Consolidated Mining Company. Ms. Garcia recalls: “At that time, there were a lot of people coming in to our office to explain about ISO. It was an extremely busy period. There was a lot of work to be done, and we had a hard time adjusting to the procedures. The help of our IMSM assessor was invaluable. He was very patient in allowing me time to understand everything about the processes. ” She continues: “We could easily consolidate some parts of our company into the ISO process. Other parts we had to rectify and recognise. The challenging aspect was accommodating the rapid transition of people that we have in our company. Here again, the assessor was very helpful. He, along with some of my team, advised me to invest in training for a select number of competent staff who plan to be with us long-term, so that we don’t have to make so many changes and adjustments in years to come.” DCD Construction currently employs a large workforce that includes experienced engineers and project staff competent in civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and architectural work, as well as heavy equipment operations. It aims to be the premier company of its kind in the region through providing the highest quality professional services. All the hard work was definitely worth it. ISO certification has benefited DCD Construction in a number of key ways, as Ms. Garcia explains: “Internally, there’s much greater efficiency. Every employee is now working more systematically and being more productive.” Ms. Mary Jane Garcia, the company’s administrative assistant, explains that the company’s strong commitment to excellence, performance and safety lies behind its decision to become ISO 9001 and OHSAS ISO 18001 certified: “There are a lot of construction companies in the Philippines. We wanted to be something better, more credible and set apart from the other construction companies here.” There are also notable improvements in terms of business: “Clients now find us more credible and trustworthy than other local companies that are not certified. There’s been an increase in the effectiveness of our marketing campaigns, because our clients are looking for a high standard construction company. Since we received certification, they see us as an A+ business and feel more secure in trusting us with the construction of their buildings.” The company CEO, Mr. Danilo Dira, met with Mr. Bernard Tetlow from IMSM and found that the vision and aims of DCD Construction matched exactly with what the IMSM ISO certification package offered; the decision to accept IMSM’s support was a no-brainer. Since being ISO certified, DCD Construction has received larger building contracts. This year, it’s taking on four large-scale projects with extensive budgets- something it could barely have imagined before. Ms. Garcia says, “We now have clients looking for us. Before, we were looking for clients. We also have a lot of walk-in clients, people coming in because they’ve heard about us. Previous clients are also referring us to their friends.” DCD Construction started the certification process for ISO 9001 on April 20th, 2012 and the very same week, it also embarked on the OHSAS ISO18001 certification. Ms. Garcia spearheaded both certification processes at once. Though this was a rather daunting prospect, she received a lot of support and reassurance right from the beginning. “The move to ISO certification has certainly improved our company for the better. We’re very grateful to IMSM for their help.” Email: [email protected] Web: www.imsm.com
