Continuing Education Report
Online Courses
ALSC continues to offer four sections of Online Education Courses during the winter, spring,
summer and fall.
Winter courses began January 6 and include: Children with Disabilities in the Library, taught by
Katherine (Kate) Todd, Adjunct Instructor, Manhattanville College; Information Literacy – From
Preschool to High School, taught by Maryann Mori, Director, Waukee Public Library; Integrating
New Technologies into Your Collections, taught by Bonnie Roalsen, Head of Children’s Services,
Dover Town (Mass.) Public Library, and Reading Instruction and Children’s Books, taught by
Katherine (Kate) Todd, Adjunct Instructor, Manhattanville College. Getting to the Core:
Librarians and Common Core State Standards, taught by Edward Sullivan, Librarian, Writer and
Educator was offered, but was cancelled due to low enrollment. Enrollment for winter courses
was lower than in previous years due to the lack of staff available to develop the course
offerings. Spring Online Education Courses will be held April 7 through May 16, 2014, and
course content is currently being developed.
The ALSC Education Committee is currently seeking new course proposals from ALSC members.
Those interested can find more information on the ALSC website, including an online proposal
form. Course and webinar proposals are being accepted on a rolling basis for future use.
Course reviews continue to be positive, and remind us of the value of these educational
opportunities. However, as more groups internally and externally offer online courses and
webinars, we’ve seen the competition for registrants increase. ALSC continues to try to offer
timely educational events at a cost that members can afford. In addition, we continue to have
courses CEU certified to provide an additional benefit to course participants. CEU certification
is an involved process that requires additional work from the course instructor and ALSC staff,
hence why not all courses have become certified. Currently we have three courses CEU
certified.

grow with the advancement of new technologies, and ALSC continues to adjust to the changing
climate. Unfortunately attendance for paid webinars has not been as high as expected, and
therefore we are looking into making changes for fiscal year 2015 that will benefit ALSC and its
members.

President’s Program: The Ripple Effect: Library Partnerships that Positively Impact Children,
Families, Communities, and Beyond
In this year’s President’s Program, chaired by Rachel Payne, attendees will be inspired to create
meaningful partnerships in their libraries and discover outreach service models from libraries
nationwide that are the nexus of support for children and families and learn how these changes
ripple out to strengthen communities as a whole. In part one of the program, Amy Dickinson,
best-selling author, nationally syndicated advice columnist, and NPR contributor, will discuss
work with Ithaca’s Family Reading Partnership and the campaign you created, A Book on Every
Bed and her efforts to move communities to support childhood and family literacy.
Handouts, including a rich book list put together by various ALSC committees, will be available
on the ALSC President's Program page in the ALA Conference Scheduler in the coming weeks.
