Heartbreaking collision

MATTAWA AREA NEWS
Miss Bianca Ramirez, DYW 2014
A Mattawa couple died together in a tragic two vehicle
collision just miles from home on Wednesday, March 26.
According to the Washington State Patrol, Claudio
Nieves, 32, and his wife, Lizania Nieves Davila, 30, were
hit by a semi-truck and trailer after their 2010 Ford Focus
stalled in an intersection.
It was at 8:35 p.m. at the intersection of State Route
240 and State Route 24 that the car, driven by Mrs. Nieves,
stalled. The couple were headed east on 24, approaching
240 at the intersection near the north Hanford gate. The car
entered the intersection and became disabled. An approaching semi, driven by Anatoliy Shabak, 25 of Kennewick, was
unable to stop and hit the couple.
All were wearing seatbelts and Mr. and Mrs. Nieves died
at the scene.
A funeral for the couple was held at the Iglesia de Dios de
Schawana church and over 550 attended to mourn the community loss. It was the same church where the couple were
wed almost four years ago. At the service Pastor Alfredo
Gutierrez, who also conducted the wedding ceremony, said
that even death couldn’t separate the couple.
They will be remembered as a caring, loving couple and
are missed by the community and their co-workers at Wahluke Family Medical Clinic.
Work on the first DOT
roundabout on a 60 mph
highway to start April 14
The local area seems to have a lot of firsts. The first cherries get ripe in the area (only about six weeks away), the first,
if not some of the very first, asparagus in the state comes
from here and most recently we call home to the first very
large crack in a very large dam.
This week another first is about to begin. According to the
Department of Transportation, a first-of-its-kind project in
the region will officially start on April 14 - a roundabout on
a 60 mph highway. The roundabout will be built at the intersection of State Route 243 and Road 24 SW, locally known
as the Mattawa hill.
Work is scheduled to be completed by Memorial Weekend, May 23.
DOT statistics show that the Mattawa intersection handles
an average of 5,800 vehicles per day. From 2007 to 2012
there were 21 collisions involving 43 vehicles. Nine of those
crashes resulted in two fatalities and 22 serious injuries. The
12 other wrecks damaged property.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety,
roundabouts reduce fatalities by 90 percent, injuries by 80
percent and total collisions by almost 40 percent. The project
is anticipated to decrease the frequency and severity of accidents at the intersection.
Drivers are reminded that lower speed limits will be used
during construction and the state patrol will be down in force
to make sure drivers are complying.
The DOT provided some tips and information for drivers
who may not know how to navigate a roundabout.
A major concern is how do semi-trucks use a roundabout,
they said. The answer is the raised, circular concrete pad
around the center of a roundabout that acts like an extra lane
for long vehicles. Trucks are allowed to use that center portion to drive on.
For more information, stop by Mattawa City Hall and
use the kiosk the DOT placed there with information on the
roundabout. You can also visit www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/
SR243/IntersectionImprovements/.
Mattawa has a new Distinguished Young Woman to represent them. Bianca Ramirez, center, was selected
as DYW 2014 for Mattawa. Joining her is her court 1st Alternate Marisabel Tirado and 2nd Alternate
Alondra Rodriguez. The court was selected at the program on March 22. Bianca replaces outgoing DYW
Ruby Coulson. Other results of the night were: SME Spirit Club Scholarship Jazmin Vega, Interview Scholarship and 2nd Alternate Alondra Rodriguez, Self Expression Scholarship and 1st Alternate Marisabel
Tirado, Focus Scholarship, Scholastic, Fitness, and Talent and DYW 2014 Bianca Ramirez, and Spirit of
Distinguished Young Woman and Be Your Best Self Scholarships Nancy Valdovinos.
Co-chair of the event Sharee Zirker had plenty of good to say about this year’s program, themed Charlie’s
Angels. I was so proud of all the girls. I was pretty weepy the last few days of the program as well as
that night. I felt like such a proud parent. They are all such unique girls with different talents and gifts
and yet they all were genuine and easy going. I am going to actually miss them. Guest talents were all
pretty amazing. We have so much talent right here in our community. I couldn’t have done any of this
without the help of Cherice Zirker, my co-chairman. She is amazing. All of the committee made my
job easier and I love them for it, she said.

He runs because he can and to help others
By Joyce Edie
Editor
Some people, like Forrest Gump of movie fame, run just
because they run. No real reason or goal.
That’s not why Mattawa resident Cielo Acosta runs. He
runs to help others.
Cielo, a local Fire District 8 firefighter, runs to raise
money for cancer research, including Code 3, an organization that specifically helps firefighters with cancer.
Cielo has been running since 2010, now having three
marathons and numerous other runs under his belt. Actually, under his fire gear.
Cielo doesn’t run in fancy athletic, wicking, lightweight
material. He runs in full firefighter gear, sometimes carrying a 20 pound air pack in addition to the 20 to 30 pounds
of extra clothing he is weighted down with. Hydration and
nutrition are a big concern during his runs.
Why run in the first place and why in firefighter turnouts? He runs because he is thankful he can and he runs to
raise money and awareness about cancer.
The fire turnouts represent a group he is proud to be a
part of and he said it gives him more opportunity to talk to
people.
“I think I sometimes look like a cartoon character in my
gear. It gives me an opportunity to talk to people, “ he said.
And what he usually talks about is his passion to help raise
money for cancer research.
He has plenty of motivation in that area. He suffered a
great loss when his grandmother died of cancer and his wife
Jessica is a survivor of childhood leukemia. And after finding out firefighters are twice as likely to suffer from cancer
as the general population, he does it for them.
There is one other thing about Cielo running that makes
one realize what a commitment he has made. In 2008 he was
working as a bike messenger in Seattle and was t-boned by
an SUV in an intersection. He had a compound leg fracture,
spent weeks at Harborview, almost had to have his leg amputated, and was told he may never walk. It took a year, but
he walked. And at the urging of his sister-in-law, two years
after the accident he did his first run in 2010 in Portland.
“I enjoyed it so much I trained for a 10K.” And it has
been uphill, and downhill, and across the fields ever since.
Last year he started running in full gear, doing his first
marathon (26.2 miles) last year at the Yakima River Canyon
Marathon.

Jane Fonda Dear Community,

by Joyce Edie
We just returned from taking, what
was for us, a long trip. We drove to LA and
back, meandering most of the way.
It has been nine years since we took
anything longer than a three or four hundred mile jaunt. A lot happens in nine years.
We moved from a home we’d owned for a
quarter of a century, we built a new home,
we gained three grandkids and let’s face it,
we got nine years older.
Speaking of age, Keith and I agreed
when we started out on March 19 that the one thing we weren’t going to do
was be old people and talk about gas mileage and what we had to pay for
said gas. So I won’t tell you that we averaged about 24.2 mpg in the 2,624
miles and we paid $5.99 a gallon in Big Sur country cause we foolishly
didn’t fill up before we started across that section of Highway 1. I’m not
going to tell you.
I will tell you we had a great, great time. We did everything we set
out to do, which mostly amounted to seeing our kids, taking our time and
enjoying the sights. The only thing we didn’t do was spend as much time
in Napa and Sonoma as we would have liked. We did see those gorgeous
rolling green hills, vineyards and stately mansions. Not as nice as here, but
nice just the same.
From hiking in the Hollywood Hills with the kids to watching the Elephant seals on the beach, to the interesting folks on Venice Beach and John
Mills at Confusion Hill, we had us a time. It was great to see where Keith
and Elise live. They have a miracle of a hummingbird who built her nest in
their secluded backyard and I couldn’t get over going out to the yard and
picking lemons. Keith finally pointed to a bowl on the counter and said,
“You know these are from our yard too.” But there was something about
picking them in real life that was so much more exciting.
I won’t lie and say we couldn’t have taken another couple of weeks, but
if we had to come home, we are glad home is right here with all of you.
When you get a chance, Google John Mills Confusion Hill. Quite a
story that happened just days before we stopped. John was in a shootout
with a cop killer. He is an interesting, down-to-earth guy and we told him
we are glad he is alive. He said he’s glad too.
We decided the best thing about travel is meeting all these cool folks
God made. It’s a great world and now we just want to see more and more
of it.
Dear Editor;
As an avid reader of
your weekly newspaper I
found an article where the
name of Jane Fonda was
negatively mentioned in
relation to the Viet Nam
conflict/war.
Over the years I have
read and heard of these accusations - being of a curious nature, I decided to do
a search for illumination
on the topic and I would
encourage the editor and
readers to research facts as
shown at Snopes.com
Thank you and keep

We had a great March! Believe it or not, we only have a little over 40 days left in this
school year! I have some exciting things to share this month! Please feel free to share this
information!
Mattawa Make-Over
I know the mayor, Judy Esser, School Board and I truly believe this make-over is going
to improve businesses in Mattawa and make living and working in Mattawa more attractive.
A win for everyone! Teaching our students leadership skills and getting them to take some
ownership in their town is truly what we all want to see happen. As we all know, it will take
all of us (students, staff, parents, businesses, etc) working together to make this a reality! As
Cesar Chavez used to say, “Si se Puede!” “Yes we Can!”
The following is a short list of businesses who have pledged support for the Mattawa
Makeover: La Popular, Mattawa Shell, Mattawa Market, Estudillos Food Store, La Parilla,
La fins, Rosas Boutique, Envious y Floreria Epi, Cruzing, Mattawa Fire Department, Fabelas Market, Mattawa Area News, and Mendez Auto Repair. As a result of their pledge
we will be placing information about their businesses around our athletic facilities for our
many visitors to see!
If you’re a business, community member, organization, or individual interested in helping support the “Mattawa Make Over” project please contact us at: 509 - 932-4565 ask for

New Community Center/Alternative School Location
I’m excited to share we will be starting a district sponsored “Mattawa Community Center” on Main Street! it will also double as our alternative school during the day. We are
hoping to open by the community center by June! This new center will be available for
community members and students. It will be used for many things... a few examples being for community members to study English and for students to complete homework. It’s
something we have been talking about for a long time and we have found to way to make it
happen! Stay tuned for more information in the coming months!

Basic Hunter Education Class Schedule &
Information
Hunter education training is required in Washington State for all hunters
born after January 1, 1972. The Department of Fish and Wildlife offers
two distinct types of hunter education training opportunities, including:
The Second Amendment
Traditional Class
WDFW strongly recommends the traditional hunter education class. One
or more instructors typically offer detailed classroom instruction, practical
exercises and live-firing activities to prepare successful students.
A well regulated militia being necessary to the
security of a free State, the right of the People to
keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
Note: All Basic classes only allow ONLINE REGISTRATION.
The Second Amendment to the
United States Constitution is the part
of the United States Bill of Rights that
protects the right to keep and bear
arms. It was adopted on December
15, 1791, along with the rest of the
Bill of Rights.
Washington Military Exemption
Active members of the U.S. military are exempt from the range evaluation session of the
Online Hunter Education Course. You must send your
Washington State Exam Certificate, documents showing
you are an active member of the United States Military,
and your Washington Online Military Exemption Form
to WDFW – Hunter Education Program at 600 Capitol
Way North, Olympia, WA 98501-1091.
The legal debate over the Second
Amendment is based on whether the
constitutional provision grants each
American an individual right to own
a gun. In 2008 and 2010, the U.S.
Supreme Court issued two landmark
decisions concerning the Second
Amendment.
Visit www.wdfw.wa.gov for class
information.
The Columbia Basin Herald and the businesses on this
page support safe and responsible gun ownership.
In McDonald v. Chicago, 561 U.S.
3025 (2010), the Court ruled that the
Second Amendment limits state and
local governments to the same extent
that it limits the federal government.

Hamilton receives
state recognition
Mattawa Area News, Wed., April 9, 2014, Page 5
Wahluke teacher Myron Hamilton was presented the
Washington Industrial Technology Education Association
(WITEA) Rookie of the Year Award at the groups conference in Wenatchee last month.
A second year teacher at Wahluke Junior High, Myron
has been instrumental in promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education in addition to developing the Gateway to Technology courses at WJH.
Automation and Robotics coupled with Design and 3D Modeling have given students the basic tools that could
lead to careers in high tech fields. Hamilton is one of the
advisers for Technology Student Association and the after
school Robotics Club, he has taken a lead role in pioneering positive changes and programs for the Wahluke School
District.
Fellow teacher Arthur Morken said, “Myron has been an
excellent teacher and cooperative colleague to work with.
He has a constant expectation of students for achievement
and behavior that elevates student accomplishments.”

He ran last week for the second time at that race and
posted his best time in full gear of five hours and 40 minutes.
“It was my third marathon run in turnout gear…. There
were some big hills and the camber of the road made things
tough, but it was a beautiful day and the scenery of the
canyon was beautiful. I had an amazing time, I met some
really amazing people and was able to talk to a lot of them
about Code 3. The Yakima River Canyon Marathon attracts
people who have run hundreds of marathons and many of
them say it is their favorite,” Cielo said.
Like every race, he said he starts out not knowing if he
will have to crawl across the finish line. So far that has
never happened, but he still has pain in his knee and reduced flexibility in his ankle. But he said that pain is nothing compared to those who suffer from cancer. That’s what
keeps him going.
“There are moments though where I ask myself why I’m
running when I’m tired and it hurts, what always gets me
through those moments is reminding myself what a blessing it is to be able to be running at all and to be outside enjoying this beautiful world. Also the opportunity to be with
all the other people challenging themselves inspires me as
do the stories I hear from fellow runners and cancer survivors. I realize I’m not just running for myself, I’m running
for a cause,” he said.
This past weekend was especially hard because he had
the flu the week before. He credits his wife with this finish.
“I wasn’t sure I’d be able to run. My wife Jessica made
me some amazing chicken soup so I spent the week eating
“super soup” and resting up,” he said.
“I’m sore but I will still be running the 5k I have planned
Saturday to finish my 3 races in 3 weeks for Code 3,” he
said.
And yes he admits, it’s kinda crazy what he does. “I’ve
tried to get people to go with me, but they all think I’m a
little nuts,” he laughed.
So far he has raised over $2,000 for Code 3 and Leukemia and Lymphoma research. His fire chief, Dave Har-
groves, said he is proud of Cielo and happy he became
a firefighter and now an EMT.

We have a lot of new faces this year with 26 players turning out. Returning players are Gabino Abarca, he will be
doing singles this year. Other players that made a run last
year at districts were Mariela Nava and Marisela Nevarez.
We have good expectations for all of our returning student
athletes. They have all been doing a great job in practice and
are learning every day.

We had two games last week, Tuesday at Highland we
lost the932-4091
game two to zero. We played well, but Highland
played a better game. Highland is very difficult to beat at
Highland. I don’t believe that we have won there in the last
two or three years.
Our second game was against Naches were we won 7
– 0. Naches is a very young team, and we were able to have
our JV team in for most of the game.
Freshmans Emmanuel Hidalgo and Erck Perez each scored 1 goal,
senior Ramon Bravo scored 2, seniors Charlie Ramos and Alez Anaya
each scored 1, and junior Luis Veloz scored 1.
Drilling continues
at Wanapum; fish
transport to start
A drilling team has completed six investigative holes
into the Wanapum Dam spillway pier monolith No. 4 as
part of the forensic examination of a fracture found in the
structure on Feb. 27.
Drilling will resume after a larger platform is constructed on the monolith to support the workers and their equipment. It may take a while since all work on the monolith,
which is only accessible by boat or crane, must stop in
wind gusts that are more than 35 miles per hour. The platform construction and drilling is expected to take about
three to four weeks without significant wind delays. The
drilling will help determine the geometry of the fracture
and how far it reaches into the monolith.
For the upcoming fish run, workers are installing
pumps in the dam’s two fish ladders and will install weirs
and flumes to help migrating fish navigate to the top of
the ladders and then to the reservoir behind the dam. The
lowering of the Wanapum reservoir by 26 feet made the
fish ladders inoperable without the modifications.
Work on the fish ladders is expected to be completed by
April 15, which is the start of the spring Chinook salmon
run. The PUD will trap fish at Priest Rapids Dam and haul
them in trucks before releasing them above Wanapum or
Rock Island dams during the first few weeks of the fish
run to make sure the ladder modifications work.
Since fish transport will start almost exactly at the same
time as construction on the local roundabout at Road 24
and SR 243, the state department of transportation said
they will be flagging fish trucks through the roundabout
construction site like they were emergency vehicles. The
fish can only be in the tanks safely for about two hours.
They estimate 10 to 15 trucks per day will leave Priest
Rapids.
One good thing about the drawdown, boat launch improvements to several sites is being made a priority and
will cost about $1 million less since the work won’t be
done underwater. The PUD is also looking into the possibility of performing similar work in other locations, pending approval from regulatory agencies.

org/your-pud/media-room/wanapum-dam-spillway-response.
