GOODBYE TO
BARBARA VAN DYK
The department of Radiography is one of the departments
that has a flagship status within the University of
Johannesburg (UJ). The department has shown tremendous
growth over the last few years under the leadership of Mrs
Barbara van Dyk whose term of office ended in December
2013. This paved the way for the department to be under new
stewardship hence I became the new Head of Department.
During the Prize giving ceremony of 2014, the department
acknowledged the contribution made by Mrs van Dyk in the
growth of the department.
The growth of the department has been witnessed in the
student enrolment, the involvement of staff in teaching
and learning activities, internationalisation, the staff
compliment and staff qualifications and research output.
The department strives to achieve and progress in line with
the UJ global stature. The department currently has a strong
presence in Africa and attracts international students from
several countries within the continent. The department
staff also engage with colleagues from Africa through
congresses, conducting workshops, research supervision,
acting as examiners and moderators. There is currently
engagement with Lund University (a U21 Universitas member)
and Canterbury Christchurch University for formalised
memorandum of understanding which will address staff and
student exchange programmes (inbound, outbound and
virtual), and development of new programmes.
The department currently has a drive to enhance the
equipment and e-learning platforms that aim to ensure that
work integrated learning is fully integrated. This has so far
been achieved through the use of the clinical training grant
(CTG). A new dedicated computer laboratory is planned to
be functional in 2015 and will house 60 desktop computers
which will have dedicated virtual teaching software (Ziltron
and Shaderware).

2014 PRIZE GIVING
CEREMONY
The department hosted the 2014 Prize Giving ceremony
on 16 April at the Council Chambers of the Auckland Park
Campus. The event saw 45 prizes awarded to deserving
students and the awardees ranged from first year students to
the B. Tech students, and also included the recipients of the
Short Learning Programme in Mammography certificates.
The event was graced by a special address from the
Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health Science,
Prof A Swart. The address by the Executive Dean was
encouraging and motivating to both the students and the
guests as he highlighted the significance of the event in
line with the UJ achievements, which includes being ranked
amongst the top 4% Universities Globally.
The event was also graced with the Special Guest of Honour
Ms Amel El Sayied Hassan Abd El-Rahim from the University
of Medical Sciences and Technology, Sudan, Khartoum. She
was visiting as part of the lecturer exchange programme
which the department has in place with the memorandum
of understanding signed between the two institutions.
She spent 3 weeks in the department engaging with both
lecturers and students. During the prize giving ceremony, she
participated in the programme by handing over the prizes to
the recipients.

The major highlight of the event was the honouring of Ms
Nicole Grafin Von Platen Hallermund who received 5 prizes
which included the prize of being the overall highest student
in the third year N. Diploma Radiography (Diagnostic)
programme with an average mark of 90%. She was also
honoured for being Top student of the Faculty of Health
Sciences for 2013! She achieved this with an average mark of
83% over 3 years. This achievement earned her a recognition
of being the member of the UJenius elite group.

ISRRT WORLD CONGRESS
In June 2014, the International Society of
Radiographers and Radiologic Technologists
(ISRRT), held their 18th World Congress in Helsinki,
Finland. Amanda Louw represented the UJ
Department of Radiography and presented
a paper on her PhD research.
The month of June is one of the best months
to visit Helsinki and with its near summer
temperatures and never-never ending days, it
truly was a wonderful experience. The Convening
Committee planned an outstanding programme
which made know how from around the world
accessible to delegates from 58 countries and
created learning and networking experiences of
great value on international level.
The scientific topics were well-balanced, covered
all the radiographic modalities and included
a strong focus on education and research. One
of the most interesting presentations, from an
Australian delegate, discussed Inter-Professional
Practice (IPP) – the delivery of health care by a
diverse team of health care professionals and
the resultant optimisation of the team members’
skills as well as improved services to patients.
The UJ Faculty of Health Sciences, with its wide
variety of health professions and clinical services,
should be the ideal setting for research into such
collaborative activities.

Surprisingly, inclusion of the subject of ethics in
medical imaging and radiation was not evident and
its importance appeared to have been neglected
at this congress. What did however stand out
very clearly, was that research performed in the
South African universities represented in Helsinki,
was of a high standard and second to none
when compared with universities from around
the globe.
SAAHE CONFERENCE –
CAPE TOWN, JULY 2014
During the July recess, my colleague Lynne Hazell and
I attended the South African Association for Health
Educationalists (SAAHE) conference in Cape Town. The
conference was a great networking opportunity, with
exchanging of ideas, sharing of research findings and
experiences in health education. I presented a paper on
“Guidelines for the facilitation of critical thinking skills in
radiography students” which was very well received. Lynne
presented a poster on the Ziltron and Shaderware software
package, and the application thereof in radiography.
Lynne Hazell at the SAAHE conference 2014 in Cape Town.
Lynne’s poster was nominated amongst the top 10 out of
the 50 posters at the conference. The conference sparked
new ideas of teaching which I will implement in the
classroom setting, and allowed me to engage with health
educationalists who share the same passion for teaching
as I do. The conference was well organized and the
presentations were carefully thought out to provide up to
date information and practical application within health
education. If you have not yet been to SAAHE, make
2015 your year to attend!

DEPARTMENT NAME CHANGE
With effect from 01 January 2015 the department will be
called the Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation
Sciences (MIRS). Due to the implementation of the new
qualifications mix within the department, a departmental
name change became necessary. The naming of the new
qualifications (professional degrees) no longer embraces the
term Radiography as a common denominator, but expresses
the core function of each qualification individually. The new
qualifications, to be implemented in January 2016, will be
designated as follows:
• Bachelor of Diagnostic Radiography.
• Bachelor of Diagnostic Ultrasound.
• Bachelor of Nuclear Medicine Technology.
• Bachelor of Radiation Therapy.
There was a general agreement that the former name of
the Department only fitted the Bachelor of Diagnostic
Radiography qualification and thus by implication excludes
the other three qualifications. The Department therefore
decided on the new name in order to sufficiently embrace all
the programmes offered in the department while ensuring
that the department follows the national and international
trends of the discipline.
The B. Technology and the N. Diploma Programmes will be
phased out to be replaced by the new professional degrees.
The M. and D. Technology degrees will also be phased out in
future to be replaced by the Master’s Degree in Radiography
and the Doctor of Philosophy in Radiography, respectively.

The Annebel Foundation
The Annebel Foundation was started in 2007 by Tania Strauss
in an effort to make underprivileged girls (usually between
the ages of 12 and 18) feel like princesses, today they assist
around 400 girls in various areas in South Africa.
As a group, we decided to organize a pamper day for the
Annebel Foundation girls based in Randfontein. We raised
money by selling pancakes and collecting cash donations as
well as product donations. In total we raised approximately
R15 500 which we used to set up this pamper day for the girls
and to buy healthcare and sanitary products to go towards
the rest of the Foundation’s girls in their monthly parcels.
On the 18th of July we went to Riebeekrand High School in
Randfontein where the girls were pampered and given lunch.
The pampering included having their hair, makeup and nails
done. They then had hot dogs for lunch and each received
a party pack containing sweets, chocolate, a cold drink and
a cupcake. Once all of this was done the girls had fun doing
photo shoots and left happily, each with a parcel containing
healthcare and sanitary products as well as a nail polish,
lip gloss, hair band, hair accessories, bangles, a face cloth
and towel. Each of the girls also received a T-shirt and
a crystal bracelet.

As group we found Mandela day to be very rewarding not
only for the children but for ourselves as well. it made us
realise that we can make a huge impact in many lives by
simply spending a few hours of our time helping the needy.
As a group we also learned to work together and this is what
made Mandela day a success.

2014 VISITS AS
EXTERNAL EXAMINER
This year my role as an External Examiner for radiography
students took me to three countries. My journey started on
the 13th of May when I visited the University of Sharjah in the
United Arab Emirates. Being my first visit to the Emirates I
was totally bowled over by the “perfection” around me –
whenever I stepped into a building I was walking on marble.
True to the Arab culture I received a warm welcome from the
colleagues and had the privilege of addressing the students
after the examination was completed. My co-examiner was
Dr Adam Sulieman, Associate Professor from the Salman Bin
Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia, who I met during the
RASCO conference in 2010.
The second visit was to the Makerere University in Uganda
where I am a familiar face. It was great to meet up with
old friends such as Prof Michael Kawooya from ECUREI in
Kampala and Prof Elias Ondidi from the Moi University in
Kenya, both of whom I had met during RASCO 2008. I was
also privileged to spend time with some of our UJ alumni who
spoiled me with aromatic Ugandan coffee and a colourful
handbag.
The last leg of my journey took me back to my family in
Sudan, this time examining for the Alzaiem Alazhari University
in Khartoum. Here I was privileged to be hosted by Dr Ahmed
Abdelrahim, the Dean of Faculty of Radiological Sciences &
Medical Imaging, who I have also known since RASCO 2010.
While in Khartoum I also spent an afternoon with our precious
partners at the University of Medical Sciences and Technology
with whom we have signed a Memorandum of Agreement for
academic collaboration. It was great to meet up with Amel
Alsaied Hassan, the exchange lecturer who visited us for three
weeks during April 2014 and discuss the way forward under
the terms of our agreement with the colleagues.
Although exhausted, I came back exhilarated by the
experience and totally overwhelmed by the kindness
that was shown to me at all three universities. Growing
my international radiography family has been one of the
highlights of my professional life for which I am eternally
grateful.
