FEBRUARY 2015 / ELK CALL
From the Station of Fidelity
My Brothers and Sisters,
It is hard to believe that it is already February. Starting this month I am finally old
enough to collect Medicare as I turn 65 years old on February 28th. So, as you can see, my
gray hair is not from being your Exalted Ruler for the last ten months, but merely from
growing older. This has been a busy but wonderful year for Janice and I, and I thank you for
all of your support so far this Elk year. We are really looking forward to this year’s Exalted
Ruler Getaway in San Diego. We want to thank everyone, in advance, for joining us in my
end of the year party.
I know that those of you who will get your Elk Call via the e-mail have not yet attended
the Super Bowl Party, then, there are those of you who get it by mail after the Super Bowl
Game. Those members getting it by mail will then know what a wonderful job our Trustee
John Miller IV and Chairman of the Board Jim Anderson did again this year in coordinating Exalted Ruler
this exciting event. A “thank you” goes out to all those that helped. I know that the winners
are excited and the losers still had a wonderful time. The Elks really know how to party.
This month is nominations and election of your 2015-2016 Garden Grove Elks Officer Corp. It is my hope that as
many members as possible will come to the first three Thursdays this month to witness the nominations and elections
of the new officers. Your future Officer Corps have been working hard every Monday night at learning and practicing
the Initiation Ritual for the Orange Coast District Ritual Contest and they will get the opportunity to initiate our new
candidates at the March 19th meeting. I hope you will come and support them. I will remind you next month.
On the third Thursday, February 19th, I will announce my choice for “Elk of the Year”. I hope you like my choice
and I hope you will attend that meeting to hear my announcement. That same meeting night also happens to be the
election meeting for your new officers. See you all then.
May God bless each of you and watch over you daily and God Bless America.
Randy Eldridge
Exalted Ruler
From the Station of Charity
My brothers and sisters, welcome to February. I can’t believe we are already one month
into 2015 and as we move into February we have some exciting plans for 2015 which
include activities for youth, veteran programs, Major Project – The Purple Pig, the Elks
National Foundation, Easter Brunch, Mother’s Day, Memorial and Veterans Day, just to name
a few and the many other activities which have been made very successful in past years
because of you, our members and our volunteers.
Please be sure to read your Elk Call for upcoming events and activities. Some of these
include the following:
We started our Ritual Practice. Garden Grove Lodge has won first place in recent years
and we endeavor to bring this glory back to our lodge.
In February we have our annual election of new officers and I highly encourage your
Esteemed
support to our new officer corps for 2015-2016.
Leading Knight

Way 2/6-8, we have the Sweetheart Dance, Feb. 14th. I’ll be hosting on Friday the 13th –
please join me at the lodge.
Now that the holidays are behind us perhaps you have some white elephants you would
like to pass on. Remember we have an auction every Thursday to raise money for the Major
Project. All donations welcome!
We still have a lapsation rate of 6.97% for this year. If you are delinquent on your dues,
please contact the office or any of the officers. Let us know what we can do to keep you on

programs for our Veterans in hospitals or nursing homes, homeless Veterans, or those in transitional housing, disabled
Veterans and Veterans in need of resources through Stand Downs. The Elks have been serving Veterans since
1917. Garden Grove is very active in these activities. Thank you all for your support.
Hope to see you in the Lodge soon.

Happy New Year From the Station of Brotherly Love
Membership is the lifeblood of every organization. No matter how large or small, without
the constant support of its members there will be no growth together to ensure the
continuation of that organization. Have you ever heard the statement “It is what it is?”
These are the words of surrender to losing membership.
The true answer to retaining membership is to ask “What if” calls or visits are made
within our membership to delinquent members to try to gain them returning to our fold?
“What if” we learn more about our delinquent members and their number of years in our
Order? “What if” there is a membership drive where every current member does their best
to sign up a family member or friend into our Order? All great things to ponder in the New
Year.
Esteemed
As our annual dues renewals are being prepared, be sure to get yours in early in support
of our Lodge. And while you’re at it, bring someone new in to help us share all that Elkdom Lecturing Knight
has to offer.
Ever practice Brotherly Love!

ELK OF THE MONTH FOR FEBRUARY 2015
February 2015’s Elk of the Month has been a very helpful member at our monthly volunteer
Sunday Breakfast. He has always stepped up to help with putting on the Sunday breakfast.
This Elk, a six year member, along with his wife has shown up for the past year like clockwork.
When they arrive they set up all of the table placemats, napkins, and flatware. They spend
their time cleaning up after each visitor and replacing each table set-up throughout the morning. When he is
not setting and cleaning tables, he is busy serving food to the buffet line. He is a very dependable volunteer
and has been recognized for his dedicated service.
I’m proud to name Albert Rodriguez as our “Elk of the Month” for the month of February 2015.

President’s Message
It’s February already?
Now that we’ve all gotten
through the December crazies
and the January catch-up-witheverything-we-didn’t-get-done-inDecember stuff, we’re heading
into the springtime rush of
activities!
The Emblem Rock-A-Thon Emblem Club
was held on January 10. Thanks
President
to our “rockers” and Virginia
Grunauer in particular for chairing this annual event. And
thanks to all of you who supported us again with your
pledges. We appreciate it very much, as do our scholarship
recipients.
We were honored to have our Supreme Emblem
President Nancy Harris visit us in January. She and her
Marshal, along with other Supreme officers, attended our
business meeting on January 14. We all enjoyed visiting
with her, and so appreciated her taking the time in her
very busy schedule to come see us and share news of
what our Emblem Club is doing nationwide.
The California-Nevada-Hawaii State Association Winter
State Meeting was held the end of January, and our club
was once again well-represented. I have enjoyed these
meetings so much for so many reasons – the fellowship,
the education, and the inspiration just to name a few.
The Garden Grove Emblem Club routinely collects
items for donation to various organizations. If you have
any of the following and would like to donate them, LuAnn
Barrows in the Elks Lodge office would be happy to collect
them and distribute as appropriate. Thank you in advance.

Another reminder, the annual Emblem Club President’s
Charity Event is being held February 15. Please take a
look at the flyers and hopefully you can clear your calendar
to attend this event. The committee has been working very
hard on the planning and it looks to be a lot of fun; monies
raised go to a terrific organization, Paws 4 Healing, and
they will have representatives there to talk about the great
things they do, talk about their certification program, and
give us some insight into how much pet-assisted therapy
means to the people they visit. Social hour is 12–1, lunch
is at 1:00 p.m., and tickets are $15.00.
Happy Valentine’s Day!

Garden Grove Elk-Enders
Celebrate the Holidays
The Elk-Enders enjoyed two exceptional events this
past December, our annual outing at the Emerald
Dessert RV Resort and our Christmas Dinner at our
Lodge.
With the excellent directions provided by our Wagon
Masters David and Janice Skelton and Chuck O’Dey
and Virginia Grunauer a total of 30 Elk-Ender RVs
descended on the Emerald Dessert RV Resort the first
weekend of December, with many arriving on Thursday
to further enjoy the weekend. We celebrated both Friday
and Saturday mornings with a delicious Pot Luck
breakfast. Friday afternoon provided appetizers as we
enjoyed Bob Crews leading us through a fun afternoon
of blind wine tasting. With the large gathering we
enjoyed a diverse assortment of different wines. Friday
night our host served homemade meatball sandwiches
along with salads and desserts from other Elk-Enders.
The evening concluded with many of us playing Skru
Your Neighbor with the winners donating their winnings
to support our Lodge Christmas Baskets program.
Saturday’s Pot Luck Breakfast was augmented with
donated champagne from Dave and Chris Bakke to
obtain additional donations to further support the
Christmas Baskets program. Many members spent the
day shopping at the local Swap Meet, the Tamale
Festival, or relaxing in the camp ground. The highlight
of the weekend was the David Skelton and Chuck O’Dey
Turkey Cook-off resulting in three turkeys, one deep
fried, two on a BBQ, all a turkey meal fixing (dressing,
Pumpkin and Apple Pies), and baked ham. Yes another
5-8 pound weekend. Following dinner our normal
meeting was conducted with our President Ken Moody
thanking our host Wagon Masters for a great weekend
and awarding the best decorated RV to Jerry and Kathi
Tretter. Of course Santa Sheriff arrived noting all the
good and not so good collecting fines to further support
the Christmas Basket program.
Our annual Christmas Dinner at the Lodge was a
fun filled evening, well planned and coordinated by
Carol Lawler and Joyce Clausen. In addition, they
obtained and wrapped numerous gifts to be awarded
to our members. Leading us in our traditional singing
of the Twelve Days of Christmas was our ER Randy
Eldridge. A special thanks to all who donated to the
Wounded Warrior and other Veteran projects. The ElkEnders donated gifts, gifts certificates and cash to these
worthy causes.

and retired Veterans. Elks furnish food, comfort care items, therapeutic
items and gifts; provide recreational activities at bases and hospitals; and,

Bequests and Living Trust
Have you ever heard of the Bequests and Living Trusts Commitment Trust?
How would you like to make some money?
PLUS get a tax break?
Dec. 6 Jackpot #1 $225.00

8664 – Kenneth Bock
9134 – Larry Methvin

PLUS build the future of the Major Project?
PLUS help children with disabilities?
The answer is: The BLT Commitment Trust
You invest $10,000 or more and receive an income of 7% annually (Where
else can you get 7% these days?) Plus, you get a tax break depending on your
age. Yes, the $10,000 or more stays in the Commitment Trust, growing and
providing for the future of the Major Project.
Not a bad deal!!!
You profit, the Major Project profits, and the children with disabilities have a
chance to walk, talk, see, and play. You and your spouse will receive the income
from the trust until both of you have passed away. What a wonderful way the
help the children in need and make it possible for them to have better care in
the future.
