Both the Purple and White 7th grade teams dominated their opponents this week. The Purple team defeated Burnet 43-12, and the White team defeated Mendez 36-6. Wow! Congratulations to all our Lady Scotties on their continued dedication to the sport. The Lamar Scotties boys soccer team made their first appearance of the 2014 season on Saturday as they played an exhibition game against Fulmore Middle School on our home field. Adrian Martinez scored 2 goals in the first half of the game, with assists by Tessy Akinsanya and Luis Morales. Defender J.C. Marquez was quick to put himself between the Fulmore strikers and the goal, throwing himself in front of several attempts, with goalies Anthony Paredes and Gordon Bolton as a last line of defense. In the end it was Fulmore that claimed the victory over Lamar with a 5-2 win. The team plays again on Saturday, November 15 at Webb with a start time of 9am. Come out and show your support! Fellow students then used their knowledge of density to interpret and reflect on the models. Go Scottie Science! Her positive attitude and love of teaching is apparent in everything she does. Walk the halls to see her students’ hard work—the creativity is endless! A Conversation with Ms. Massey What made you decide to become an educator? I grew up with a family that was always education based. My mother used to take me to college classes with her because we couldn’t afford a babysitter. So there I was, 6‐8 years old, sitting in the back of a college class sketching cartoons or coloring with pencils. She got her degree in education and art, so I think that I may have absorbed some of the lectures without realizing it. Also, I’ve always had a passion for the fine arts (visual arts, theatre, dance and music). Being able to share that and teach students how to pursue their passion is amazing! Tell us about your background (where you’re from, where you went to school, how you came to be a teacher at Lamar, etc.): I grew up in a rural Texas town just south of Brenham—where they make Blue Bell ice cream, so needless to say there were many school field trips to the creamery. I attended many different grade schools and colleges. I even lived in Ohio and studied landscape architecture. Eventually I received a BFA in Studio Art‐Sculpture/Installation from Sam Houston State University. What do you feel is the most exciting thing about teaching at Lamar? The students are so unique and creative. It’s awesome to see so many students who enjoy being themselves, and are able to share that spark. What are some fun facts about you? Everyone has something that they GEEK out about, whether it be playing video games, listening to music, cooking, sports etc. I geek out on learning the Latin names of trees. This started when I was a landscape architect student and I still haven’t seemed to break the habit. I also enjoy creating artwork in the environment. This could be anything from sketching under a Quercus Virginiana (Live Oak) in a park, or installing massive sculptures in an urban setting. What do you think is the most important advice or wisdom you can impart to your students? Don’t be afraid to take chances! Telling yourself that you can’t do something is the worst thing that you could do, and you will miss out on soooo many opportunities. When you take chances and try new things, you’ll be amazed at how really capable you are, and it will help guide you to do something that you truly love and are proud of.
