Of Mice and Men
Final Assignment Options
As your end-of-unit project, you will complete TWO of the following written
assignments:
PART 1: Judge the Better or the Best – Persuasive Editorial
John Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962 for his body of work,
which included Of Mice and Men.
According to the Nobel Foundation, “The Nobel Prize in Literature 1962 was
awarded to John Steinbeck "for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as
they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception.’”1
Do you agree with this statement? You will write an opinion letter to the editor of
Roméo-Dallaire Weekly letting him or her know what you thought of the novella, Of
Mice and Men, and whether you think the author deserved the Nobel Prize.
Your letter will need to:
o be between 1 ½ and 2 pages long, double-spaced in 12-pt font
o clearly state your point of view as to whether you liked the book or
not, and whether the author deserved such an honour
o THREE strong arguments (reasons) as to why you enjoyed the book, or
didn’t enjoy the book (make sure you go beyond “it was good” or “it was
boring” – show critical thinking), and why the author did or didn’t
deserve the Nobel Prize for Literature
o an explanation for each of your arguments (reasons)
o a call to action in the conclusion (Did John Steinbeck really deserve
the Nobel Prize for Literature?)
o follow the proper form of editorial writing.

PART 2: Rework the Piece – Creative representation
Choose ONE of the following activities to complete for your Creative Writing
activity.
1.
Create a scrapbook for one of the characters, including images, keywords,
symbolism, literary devices, and anything else that could reflect the
character, his personality, and who he is. Write a detailed paragraph to
explain THREE of the objects you chose to include in your scrapbook (with
elaboration for each).
2.
Alternative ending – Didn’t like the way the story ended? Then change it!
Using dialogue and literary devices, re-write the final chapter of the story,
including how different things could’ve been. How can you improve on
Steinbeck’s work? *
3.
First-person perspective diary entry – What were some of the characters
thinking and feeling during the story? Maybe the third-person narrator left
out things that may have been happening behind the scenes. You will write
TWO journal entries (at least one page each) from the perspectives of
characters in the story that deals with important events in the story. You may
write from three different characters’ first-person perspectives, or you
can simply choose one character, and have him or her respond to the
story’s events in a personal diary. The idea, however, is to go beyond the
book, and imagine what a character may have been feeling, thinking, and
perceiving a certain situation.**
* Use the notes on how to punctuate written dialogue to help you out, and make
sure to maintain the author’s style (vernacular dialogue, similes, metaphor, and
other literary devices we covered during our novel study).
** Use the person’s voice in your journal entries.
To be successful, your work must:
 Be formatted according to APA standards (see Purdue OWL)
 Show organization, and attention to detail
 Be accompanied by all process work, and have had some obvious revisions made to it
 Be incredibly creative, and show that you are able and willing to take some creative
license to create something new and imaginative.
 Be emailed to me at [email protected] by Thursday, March 27th.
