President’s
Report
By Joe Donahue
Happy New Year!
Hopefully everyone had a great Holiday Season and finished 2014
without any regrets. Gaining a little bit of weight during all the
festivities does not count. Speaking for the entire VDN Board I
would like to thank everyone who makes this neighborhood a great
place to live. We worked very hard to accomplish a great deal and we
have finished the year without any regrets.
We actually finished our last events with great weather and an
outstanding turn out. Saturday morning, December 13, Santa
entered the neighborhood with a police escort to start Donuts with
Santa. Then at noon we honored a long time volunteer, friend, and
mentor of our neighborhood with the naming of our tennis courts. If
you have not noticed, go by and check out the newly renovated Vista
Del Norte Bob Provines Tennis Center. Then we took a short break
to meet back up at the park for some holiday caroling at 6:00 pm.
I would like to give special thanks to Ella Kay Peterson for
organizing the Donuts with Santa and the evening Carolers. As
with all our events, let’s thank the cast of supporting volunteers:
VDN Board - you know what all you did; Don Peterson, for
the trailer of hay and driving for both events; Chris Myles,
say hi to Santa for us; Teri Swartz, help with everything, great
Santa Helper; Lisa McGovern and Ben Martin, guitar and
leading the Carolers. And anyone else I may have missed!
As you know we have been doing Donuts with Santa for some time
now and it is great to see everyone (young and old) come out and
enjoy the morning with Santa. This is the first time we tried caroling,
we did have a great turn out for the caroling but it seemed after the
ride a lot of folks left and did not hang out for the festivities in the
park. From the turn out we had we do plan on doing this again next
year. We did learn a few lessons and we will go a lot slower next year
and hopefully we can get even more help next year. As I have learned
volunteering, some events grow with more interest and some not so
much. I hope the caroling will grow and become a tradition in our
great neighborhood.
I need to get back and talk about the Tennis Courts. By the time you
read this report the tennis courts will be open again after a longer
than expected repair cycle. We closed the courts down for much
needed safety repairs. Due to the moist and cold weather the repairs
of the courts are in the finishing stage as I write this report. The
Tennis Committee dedicated the courts to Bob Provines. Please look
inside this newsletter for the rest of the story about the dedication.
I would like to thank all the tennis players involved and especially
Dirk Reeder for being the driving force behind this project.
Moving forward I am looking forward to our Annual VDN HOA
Meeting on January 12th. We will discuss all the accomplishments
of 2014 and make plans for 2015. We will say thank you to our
board members moving on and welcome some new board members.
Remember if you are interested in a board position or help with any
of the committees, this is the meeting for you. We will kick off the
meeting at 6:30 with appetizers and a cash bar, Meet and Greet time.
Then at 7:00 we will start the meeting. Looking forward to seeing
everyone at Silverhorn Golf Course, 1100 W Bitters Rd, just across
the street from Hidden Forest Subdivision.
Till next time, be safe!

From the Editor.....

Greetings & Salutations:
We continue to have beautiful warm weather for the Holiday
Season as I write this in mid-December. I hope all our neighbors
made their Holiday travels in fine and safe style and that great
family memories were made at your Holiday Gatherings.
Update your information on VDN Website: Wouldn’t you
want your neighbors to be able to get in touch with you if they
saw something happening to your house? Missing or incorrect
information in the Directory is not helpful.
Please go to the VDN Website www.vdnhoa.com and update your
phone numbers and add other pertinent information that would
help your neighbors find you if needed for an emergency. If you
don’t have a computer, ask your computer neighbor to help in
putting your information online.
Box it in to get more attention, please!
It’s time that we look into the possibility of helping and
volunteering for the betterment of our VDN neighborhood..
Please consider this satisfying opportunity and help bring new
ideas and visions to this wonderful neighborhood we live in. Don’t
forget to make plans to attend our VDN Annual Homeowners
Meeting at Silverhorn Golf Course January 12, 2015. It’s a time
for neighbors to come together, find out what’s happening and
join in the VDN plans for 2015. See you there!
If anyone knows of someone who takes care of infants in their
home in this area, please call me, Velma Keller, at 492-0288.

Neighborhood Watch
By Stephen Schneider
Our Crime Prevention efforts are paying off and 2014 was a big
success in part to you! Also, Captain. Roberts and his deputies of
Bexar County Police have gone the extra effort in making VDN a
safer place…Thank You All!
Crime Prevention is a 24/7 365-day effort of every resident in
VDN. So continue to be vigilante and call SAPD (9-1-1) on
anything that does not feel right to you.
If you have been the victim of a crime, call the police first. Then
let me know about it so we can keep tabs on the criminal activity
happening in our neighborhood. We also inform the off duty
officers who have been patrolling of this activity so that they can
target certain times and types of crimes.
Contact Stephen Schneider ([email protected]).
As always, if you see Suspicious Activity or
Criminal Activity…CALL 9-1-1!
Start the New Year right with a
tune up and safety check of your
furnace.
Check for dangerous Gas Leaks
Check for deadly Carbon Monoxide
Check the heat exchanger, clean as necessary
Check the induced draft motor blower
Check the ignitor
Check and tune combustion
Check all interlocks and problem codes
Light the pilot (if you still have one)
Check heating performance
Amazingly enough, both the safety check and tune-up are
only $58!

Caroling Hayride in VDN
The evening of Saturday, December 13, sounds of Christmas
Carols filled the air throughout the neighborhood as some
20 VDN carolers climbed aboard a hayride trailer. Many
neighbors came out to hear the carolers as they past by. One
even gave a gift of candy to the carolers. When the trailer got
back to the park, other residents had gathered, so a second
trip through the neighborhood was made. After caroling the
trailer returned the carolers back to the park for some Hot
Chocolate, Apple Cider and S’Mores.
With this being our first caroling hayride in the subdivision,
we did learn some lessons for next year - making sure everyone
has flashlights to be able to read their song words, and to
stop or move more slowly so as to give neighbors more time
to come outside and enjoy the sounds. If you would like to
suggest other ideas, please let your board know.
This event seemed to be a good tradition to continue since
we had so many neighbors taking part.

DONUTS WITH
SANTA
Santa arrived in the Park aboard a
Hayride trailer escorted by a police
siren for Donuts With Santa in
the Park. Children came from all
directions to greet our jolly guest!
Approximately 50 children visited
with Santa and got their pictures
taken with our red-suited guest.
There were even a few puppies
that enjoyed getting their picture
taken with Santa. At the end of
the morning some 8 dozen donuts,
coffee, milk and juice had been
devoured. All went home in the
spirit of the holidays.

VDN Tennis Courts Dedicated
By Dirk Reeder
On Saturday at noon, December
13, 2014 our neighborhood
dedicated the VDN Tennis
Courts to Bob Provines. Bob has
been a resident of Vista Del Norte
for 12+ years. He has actively
served on the VDN board for
many years in various positions
from President to Treasurer and
served on several committees.
He has been a great ambassador
to our community ensuring our
playground, park, front entrance and tennis courts are
well maintained and enjoyed by all the residents of our
neighborhood. VDN recently repaired and resurfaced
the tennis courts and because of Bob's love of the game,
friends and the board have collaborated to dedicate the
courts as the "Bob Provines Tennis Center".
Thanks to the board and friends that attended the
ceremony.
New Neighbors and New Additions
John and Jeanne O’Brien have moved to 13319 La Vista from
their previous home in the Stone Oak area. They moved to Texas
from Wisconsin about 8 years ago. John works with Wells Fargo
and Jeanne teaches pre-K at Wilshire Elementary (NEISD).
She loves working with children and happily volunteered with
our Donuts with Santa event. Daughter McKenzie is a senior at
ISA. Pet dog, Willie, appears to be enjoying his “new digs” along
with the rest of the family.
Moving to13431 La Vista are David and Amy Mills and their
three children, Joseph, Katherine, who recently celebrated a
birthday; and Matthew. David has retired from the Air Force
and is currently working at USAA. Originally from the south
Texas area, David is glad to be back “where the temps rarely fall
below 20 degrees.” The family owns a beautiful Calico cat, Roxy,
who has managed to stretch her 9 lives over 20 years so far!
Michael and Alexandra Hernandez live at 13246 Vista del
Mundo and are moving from another nearby neighborhood.
Both parents work for HEB. Alexandra is a physician whose
practice is focused on the employees of HEB. Six-year old son
Daniel, attends Castle Hills First Baptist School and is active in a
variety of sports. The family is completing house renovations and
are happy with the lower HOA dues that result from a resident
run neighborhood association.
