The region’s jobless rate was down 1.0 percentage point from 7.0 percent a year ago and was slightly below the state rate of 6.1 percent. Out of a labor force of 648,563, there were 38,823 unemployed residents in the region. • Hillsborough County (6.0 percent) had the second lowest unemployment rate in the fourcounty Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metro area in May. The jobless rates in the other counties in the metro area were 5.9 in Pinellas, 6.8 percent in Pasco, and 7.8 percent in Hernando. • Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater led all metro areas in Florida in over-the-year gains in manufacturing in May 2014. The metro area also ranked second in over-the-year job gains in financial activities (behind Miami-Miami Beach-Kendall) and professional and business services (behind Jacksonville). Employers - organizations that carry out programs under the National Apprenticeship Act, and/or public institutions of higher learning located within Hillsborough County are eligible to apply. This flexible program is designed to provide financial assistance to employers that recognize the importance of investing in their employees. The skills employees gain will help companies to achieve greater employee retention, maximum productivity and market competitiveness. The available funding will provide assistance to employers to pay for preapproved training-related costs. EWT funds are limited and are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. The program offers a structured training method that allows employers to utilize their existing, full-time employees to earn while they learn. The specialized training directly relates to four in-demand IT occupations: Applications Developer (Software), Applications Developer (Web), Help Desk Technician, and Network Support Technician. Both students were accepted and began their positions as welders/fitters on June 23rd with International Ship Repair & Marine Services, Inc. at a pay rate of $11.25 per hour. Their jobs consist of using welding tools, learning the terminology of the tools and vessels, and leanring the fundamentals of welding and tack welding with stick. BEFORE The WIA Program at CareerSource Tampa Bay provided the young workers with supportive services to obtain the required tools, such as steel-toed boots. Recently, CareerSource Tampa Bay has partnered with Jerry Ulm Dodge and The Morgan Auto Group to source for more youth placements.
