A tsunami is generated by shallow focus earthquake along areas of subduction raising the sea
level to an en orm ous height before travelling ashore as gigantic sea waves. It can also be
generated by volcanic eruptions and landslides. An earthquake-generated tsunam i is caused
by displacements that lifts or d rops part of the sea floor rapidly. This im parts enorm ous energy
into the overlying w ater mass with drastic changes in the sea level generating sea waves called
tsunamis.
HOW DOES A T SU N A M I WORK?
A tsunami travels outw ard in all directions of the generating area. It's speed depen ds on the
depth of the w ater so the waves undergo slow ing d ow n or speeding up over an ocean bottom
of varying depth. In the deep ocean, it travels at speeds of 500 to 1,000km/hr. The length of
the w aves from crest to crest can be as much as 500 to 650 kilometres and the height from
trough to crest maybe no more than 30 to 60 centimetres. A tsunam i has enorm ous energy of
motion and unlike other w aveforms it extends through the entire w ater column from sea
surface to the ocean bottom.
Upon reaching shallow water, the speed of the advancing tsunam i diminishes, its w ave length
decreases and its height increases greatly, ow ing to the piling u p of the water. Configuration
of the coastline, shape of the ocean floor an d character of the advancing w aves play important
role in the destruction b ro u g ht by a tsunam i along any coast.
The first visible indication of an approaching tsunam i is often a recession of w ater and
therefore any w ithd raw al of the sea should be considered a w arn in g of an approaching wave.
Λ tsunami is not one wave and the tim e lapse between the passage of successive w ave crests
is from 10 to 45 minutes. Destructive oscillations m ay continue for several hours an d several
days may pass before the sea returns to its normal state.
A tsunam i is most dangerous w hen it is generated near a shore because it can strike at a very
short time after its generation. It could strike within minutes.
Remember, if you arc in coastal area and you can feel strong shaking of an earthquake, then
that maybe the only w arning you get before a tsunam i strikes.
T S U N A M I SAFETY TIPS
•
•
Standby for a tsunami em ergency w h en you h ear that a large earthquake has occurred.
If you are near the coast and you feel a strong earthquake, do not hesitate b u t head for
higher grounds. An earthquake in y our area is a natural tsunam i warning.
• Stay out of danger areas until the "all clear'' message is issued by the authorities.
Remember that a tsunam i is not a single wave b u t a series of waves.
Φ Any sudden rise or fall of coastal w ater signals an approaching tsunami.
• Respect all tsunamis. A small tsunam i at one point on the shore can be extremely large
a few kilometres away.
S Be prepared for the worst. A tsunam i w arn in g will only be issued w h en a tsunam i exists.
This m eans that a tsunam i has been som ew here else and maybe m oving tow ard s Fiji.
• All tsunam is are potentially dangerous even tho ug h they m ay not dam age every coastline
they strike.
• N ever go d ow n to the shore to watch a tsunami. Keep y o u r distance. Remember when
you can see the wave, you are too close to escape it.
• If you are living in a coastal area, a tsunam i w arning will also apply to you, so be alert.
• Please cooperate d u rin g a tsunam i emergency. The emergency organisations such as the
Police an d others will try to assist you the best they can.
