Gerry Skinner
Manager/Owner
Newfound Energies
Gerry Skinner is originally from St. John’s, NL and has been a small
business operator for 45 years. After assisting a colleague in installing a
solar power system at his cottage in 2001 (during a short stint of
retirement), Gerry Skinner quickly realized all of the advantages that
renewable energy has to offer to us. With that realization, he soon after left
retirement and founded Labrador Coastal Equipment Limited. Since then,
Gerry has traveled the world in pursuit of knowledge and has worked
relentlessly towards educating Newfoundlanders and Labradorians about
the environmental and financial benefits of producing clean energy with
wind turbines, solar panels, small hydro power generation, biodiesel production and
composting. In 2008 the business was renamed Newfound Energies.
Newfound Energies is proud to offer sales, design and installation of turn-key renewable energy
systems.
Gerry and his small staff have installed in excess of 200 renewable energy systems within the
province and abroad. It can be realized that each one of these systems has replaced gas/diesel
burning generators, or offset the usage of utility power which in many cases is also derived from
consumption of fossil fuels. Newfound Energies and their systems have been integral in taking
fish farms, hunting lodges and remote homes into the category of sustainable off-grid
operations. Currently, Gerry and his team are working to open his Portugal Cove-St. Philips
home/business to the public as a demonstration of a completely sustainable home connected to
the Newfoundland power grid. Upon the installation of a wind turbine, solar electric modules,
solar thermal hot water collectors and composting toilets, his home will be the first grid
interconnected business or home within the province, and certainly one of the most unique
demonstration units in North America. Gerry was instrumental in the town of Portugal Cove-St.
Philips’ decision to write bylaws and to allow the erection of wind turbines within that
community. In doing so, he was also the first to apply for and receive a wind turbine permit for
his property.
It is also noteworthy to mention how Gerry approaches industry, and encourages local business
and not for profit organizations to take advantage of the few incentives that are currently
available for renewable energy and GHG offset. Gerry has also contributed to research projects
by weighing in with his input on multiple projects for the College of the North Atlantic, National
Research Council of Canada, Canadian Coast Guard and the Department of Fisheries and
Oceans. Many students and professors alike from Memorial University have called upon Gerry
and Newfound Energies for advice in their research efforts.
Though Newfound Energies has grown a lot since its inception, Gerry still insists on offering the
same services day in and day out; free advice, consultation, analysis and site visits to any
interested person or group and occupies most every minute of his time doing so. Actually,
whether or not somebody is interested in his ideas, they will usually walk away with increased
interest, enthusiasm and a more open mind about renewable energy. This further illustrates his
ability and commitment to share his vast renewable energy knowledge with everybody he meets.
