A) Examination Technique
Improving Surgical Outcomes
Standardized Diagnostic B-Scan
General Session ●
8:00 am-3:30 pm General Session ●
8:00 am-3:30 pm
With ever increasing patient expectations, cataract surgery has now
moved into the realm of refractive surgery, demanding that today’s
IOL Calculation Team continuously evaluate the accuracy and efficiency of performing preoperative measurements and IOL power calculations. With the increased requirements of premium lenses along
with the added complexity of patients who have had prior refractive
surgery, this topic is more relevant than ever before.
This session will review recommended validation criteria to ensure
accuracy and consistency in the following four critical areas:




Axial eye length measurement, whether obtained by optical coherence (IOL Master/Lenstar) or immersion ultrasound biometry,
Corneal power measurement (keratometry) for both monofocal
and toric lenses, as well as for patients who have had prior refractive surgery,
Appropriate lens power calculation formula selection, and
The importance of lens constant personalization.
Break-out Session●
3:45 pm-5:15 pm
1.5 Group A JCAHPO Credits
Please choose one (1) of the following:
A) Post Refractive Surgery IOL Power Calculations With the
exponential increase in the number of cataract patients who have
had prior refractive surgery, accurate calculation of IOL power for
these patients has become one of the greatest challenges in
today’s cataract practice. With a myriad of published methods
and on-line calculators available, this task has become quite
daunting. This session will review the latest findings regarding
the methods deemed most accurate and reliable for patients who
have undergone prior RK, myopic LASIK/PRK, or hyperopic
LASIK/PRK. Options for patients whose prior records are not
available will also be included.
B) Immersion Biometry Hands-on Workshop This session will
review ultrasound principles and machine settings that must be
understood in order to evaluate the waveform and obtain an accurate measurement. A step-by-step explanation of “optimal”
examination technique will be presented. Attendees will be expected to perform immersion biometry on each other utilizing
select biometry equipment provided by the following manufacturers:
Scheduled providers:
Accutome…………………..A-Scan Plus
Quantel Medical…………..Compact Touch
Sonomed………………..…PacScan 300 Plus
Ellex...................................eyecubed
Attendees should be prepared to sign a consent and waiver form and come
prepared to remove contact lenses.
Course Instructor ●
The first half of the program focuses on principles and practices of standardized examination technique enabling the attendee to answer these and other important questions:
 How do I locate pathology within the eye?
 How do I obtain the best image of it?
 How do I document its location?
B) Diagnostic Interpretation
The second half of the program consists of case presentations
illustrating B-Scan differentiation of the following ocular conditions :
Vitreous:
Asteroid Hyalosis, Vitreous Hemorrhage, Endophthalmitis,
Posterior Vitreous Detachment, PHPV, Vitreomacular Traction
Syndrome
Retina:
Retinal Detachment, Retinal Tear
Choroid:
Choroidal Detachment, Choroidal Thickening
Sclera:
Scleritis, Posterior Staphyloma, Scleral Buckle
Optic Nerve:
Optic Disc Edema, Optic Disc Drusen, Optic Disc Cupping,
Increased Subarachnoid Fluid
Mass Lesions:
Choroidal Nevus, Choroidal Melanoma, Metastatic Carcinoma, Choroidal Hemangioma, Retinoblastoma, Choroidal
Osteoma
Miscellaneous:
Intraocular Gas, Air or Silicone Oil, Dislocated lens, Penetrating
Trauma
Anterior Segment:
Iris Cyst, Iris Melanoma, Ciliary Body Melanoma, other miscellaneous anterior pathology
Hands on Workshop ●
3:45 pm-5:00 pm

provided by participating manufacturers.

In addition to 30 clinic hrs per week, Rhonda’s responsibilities include development of clinical protocol and training of clinical staff and ophthalmology residents in each of the following areas: Ultrasound Biometry: Immersion A-Scan axial eye length measurement, Optical Biometry: IOL Master axial eye length measurement, IOL
Power Calculation: Holladay IOL Consultant/Holladay II, Ultrasound Diagnostic 10 MHz B-Scan: Standardized imaging, localization and
differentiation of ocular lesions/pathology in the posterior segment, Ultrasound Diagnostic 20-50 MHz B-Scan: Standardized (high resolution) imaging, localization and differentiation of ocular lesions/pathology in the anterior segment, Ultrasound Diagnostic A-Scan: Standardized (A-Scan) imaging, localization and differentiation of ocular lesions/pathology in the globe, and Intra-operative Ultrasound Guidance:
Radioactive plaque therapy for choroidal melanoma. Rhonda graduated from Emory University and became a Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist in 1984, then became a Certified Retinal Angiographer in 1986. She joined the staff at Emory Eye Center in 1988 and
earned her Master of Medical Science in Ophthalmic Technology from Emory in 1994. She became a Registered Ophthalmic Ultrasound Biometrist in 1997 and a Certified Diagnostic Ophthalmic Sonographer in 2001. She was a certified echographer for the Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study and she is the author of the B-Scan module in JCAHPO’s Refinements series as well as Medscape’s
chapters on A-Scan Biometry and Ocular B-Scan Ultrasound.
