Second Language program. SAU-ESL is part

As an SAU-ESL student, you will have access
to all University facilities and services,
including health services, the library, internet
access, computer labs, exercise facilities—
such as the gym and the pool—and student
clubs!

The SAU-ESL program will prepare you
for full participation in the University
degree programs by speeding up your
English language learning and fluency
and by developing your strategies for
successful academic discourse and cultural
competence. When you have completed the
SAU-ESL program, you will be ready for one
of the many majors and degree programs
available at Southern Arkansas University.
When you arrive in Arkansas, we will meet
you at the airport and help you to get settled
on campus. On the first day of the session,
we will assess your English level and place
you in the most appropriate classes. Our
professional instructors will help you progress
through the levels at a very fast pace.
Finally, you will appreciate that our tuition
and fees cost much less than many other

Conditional Admission
Are you interested in studying in the United
States, but your English skills are too low?
As long as you meet the other academic
admission requirements, we can still give
you conditional admission for undergraduate
study or graduate study. With conditional
admission to SAU, you will study English
intensively in the SAU-ESL program.
When you meet SAU’s English proficiency
requirement, you will be able to start your
degree program at the beginning of the next
semester.
How to Apply
1. Decide which session to begin your
study at SAU-ESL.
2. Complete your online application (www.
saumag.edu/esl) and provide a $50
application fee.
3. When your application is approved, we
will contact you for the following:
• provide official transcripts from all
previous secondary schools, colleges,
and universities attended.
• a copy of your passport (name page
only)
• an Affidavit of Support with supporting
documents from the bank showing
a minimum available balance of
$18,500.
4. After we receive these items, we will
process your I-20 (the document
international students need to apply
for a U.S. student visa) and acceptance
letter and mail it to your address within
one week. We can also issue an official
letter of conditional admission to an
undergraduate/graduate program upon
your request.
• 5 Levels of Study
(Beginner to Upper-Intermediate)
Students take the SAU-ESL
Placement Exam and are placed
in the appropriate level.
• 24 Hours of Instruction Per Week
Each week includes 18 hours of classes
and 6 hours of laboratory.
• Professional Experienced Teachers
SAU-ESL instructors have years of teaching
experience. Most have advanced degrees,
have lived and taught outside of the United
States, and are fluent in
another language.
