Abstract Lutein (C4oH'602) is the primary xanthophyll pi gment th at produces orange co lor in mari gold (Tageles erecla L. ) fl owers, co mpos ing roughly 90% ofth e petal s identifi ed pigments. This pi gment from mari go ld is currentl y used as add iti ve in poultry feed, food coloring and neutrace uti ca lsThe increas ing demand for mari gold pi gment has paved the way for genetic upgradation and expansion of cultivation of thi s fl ower within the country, Eight accessions of Tageles erecla L. collected from various locati ons in India were introduced and cultivated under mid hill s of Kangra Valley (H.P.) following uniform cultural practices. The accessions were assessed for growth performance, fl ower co lor, xan thophyll content and fl ower yield . Xanthophyll conten t was found hi ghest in orange fl owers in all the accessions. Promising accessions were selected and inbred to get pure lines with oran ge fl ower heads, The fl ower yield of the pure lines ran ged from 61-78 qt/ha and xanthophyll yield varied from (2.5 -5 .0 kg/ha). The pure lines with xanthophyll content 01'0.71 , 1.4 and 0.9 were se lected and combined by single and polycross method fo r hybrid and co mposite seed production. Th e fl ower yie ld of the proge ny rai sed from hybrid and composite seed out yielded th e inbred lin es du e to heterosis.
