ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Why we need to do research? What do we understand by
the term good research? What are the present business
problems which can lead to a good thesis? How to find out
a research problem? What are the different paradigms
and approaches of carrying out research? How to make a
defendable synopsis and successfully execute it? Clear
understanding of what good research is a prerequisite of a
successful career in academics and it starts with doing
thesis. From where to start and navigate in this world
which has more questions than answers is a burning
problem. Every budding researcher needs a roadmap to
follow in order to do good research and master the ability
to conceptualize the research problem and have a clear
understanding and appreciation of various paradigms and
approaches. The prolific researchers understand this and
develop an ability to convert various business problems
into good research problems and ultimately come out
with a good quality thesis.
Our interactions with Ph.D students and young faculties
over a period of time have shown that there is a lack of
understanding in the areas of problem identification,
problem definition, literature review, research design, etc.
The focus of this faculty development programme (FDP) is
to familiarize aspiring researchers with the broad
approaches that can be used for conducting good
research. We want to provide the participants hands on
experience through three workshops along with lectures
on various aspects of doing quality research.

Research scholars and faculty members of Management,
Engineering, Law Colleges, Institutes, and Universities.
This FDP attempts to provide insights on what is good
research and how one can do interesting and meaningful
good quality research within the given constraints. A
hands on approach is adopted for the FDP and includes a
number of workshops as well.
ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
The University of Petroleum & Energy Studies (UPES) is a
private research university in Dehradun, Uttarakhand
known traditionally for its education and research in fields
of energy & power.
FEE
Rs. 6,500/- (Non-residential) and Rs. 12000/(Residential) plus service tax @ 12.3% totaling to Rs.
7300/- (Non-residential) and Rs. 13476/- (Residential).
The fee is to be paid in advance by Demand Draft drawn in
favor of “M-Power India Energy Pvt. Ltd.” payable at
“Delhi”. The fee covers, academic charges, course
materials, working lunch, kit and tea & snacks for
participants. For residential participant it also includes
stay on sharing basis, dinner and conveyance from place
of stay to university.
UPES Dehradun, established in 2003, is sponsored by
Hydrocarbons Education and Research Society. It provides
domain specialized programs in oil and gas,
transportation, power, computer science, information
technology, international business, logistics and supply
chain, infrastructure. UPES is the only Asian University to
receive the World Oil Award.

COVERAGE
The FDP is going to focus on enabling budding researchers
in the areas of identification of business problem,
developing research problem with the help of literature
review and research gaps, appreciation of various
research paradigms and research approaches leading to
research design, introduction to research methodology
and various research methods.

The university offers over 75 undergraduate and
postgraduate programs. UPES is the one of the first
universities of India to provide UG, PG and PhD programs
in the core sectors of petroleum and energy. UPES is the
only university to set up an Oil Rig on campus. The campus
is also enabled with 1KW wind turbine mill and a solar
power project with 100 KWp installed capacity. It is the
first Indian Energy Institution to setup an in-house BioDiesel Laboratory.

Location
The campus being located in Dehradun which is famous for its
picturesque landscape and slightly milder climate and provides
a gateway to the surrounding region. Dehradun is itself home
for various prestigious institutes for Petroleum and Earth
Sciences such as Indian Institute of Petroleum, Oil and Natural
Gas Corporation, Wadia Institute of Himalyan Geology and
Survey of India.
It is well connected and in proximity to popular Himalayan
tourist destinations such as Mussoorie, Nainital and Auli and
the Hindu holy cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh along with the
Himalayan pilgrimage circuit of Char Dham.
The Road route as from Dehradun ISBT → Balliwala Chowk →
Indian Military Academy → Prem Nagar → Nanda ki
chowki(This whole stretch is a part of Chakrata road). A 9 km
long uphill stretch from Nanda ki Chowki and you will see huge
campus of UPES.
