Designed and constructed from 1905-08, Unity Temple
represents a defining moment in Frank Lloyd Wright’s early
career. The harmony of the building’s architecture and
decorative elements exemplifies Wright’s theory of organic
design. Unity Temple is one of Wright’s most sophisticated
accomplishments, declaring a new era of innovation in
modern architecture.

Designed by Daniel Burnham and John Root, The Rookery
(1888) is one of Chicago’s greatest early commercial
skyscrapers. The luminous and brilliantly articulated central
light court was designed by Wright in 1905. Root’s original
ornamental metalwork designs and Wright’s remodeling
of goldleaf-incised Carrara marble result in a spectacular
environment.

Pedal Oak Park Bicycle Tour—Friday, Saturday, Sunday
(June–September)
Explore Oak Park’s historic neighborhoods on a guided bike
tour of 22 Wright-designed structures.
Experience Wright’s first home and studio, birthplace of an
architectural revolution. Wright used his home (1889) to
explore design concepts that would shape his architectural
philosophy. In his adjacent studio (1898), Wright and his
associates developed a new American architecture—the
Prairie style. The historic district surrounding the Home
and Studio has the greatest number of Wright-designed
homes anywhere.
Sparking a revolution in residential architecture that still
reverberates today, the Robie House (1908-10) survives
as one of Wright’s greatest buildings. One of AIA’s 10
most significant structures of the 20th century, the house is
a masterpiece of the Prairie style and an icon of modern
architecture. A historic restoration is underway at the
Robie House.

Wright built this richly conceived yet intimately scaled residence
in 1915 for the president of Chicago’s Bach Brick Co. While
adopting the vocabulary of Wright’s Prairie houses, the Bach
House also looks toward the architect’s future stylistic directions
in its crisp geometry and efficient scale.
