Catalyst 2960-X Migration Guide

Migration Guide
Migrating to Cisco Catalyst 2960-X Series Switches
Cisco® Catalyst® 2960-X Series Switches (Figure 1) provide an upgrade opportunity
for the Cisco Catalyst 2K Series of Layer 2 Gigabit and Fast Ethernet switches for
campus and branch access deployments. They enable intelligent services such as
higher stacking scalability, application visibility, Smart Operations, Layer 3 routing,
and best-in-class energy efficiency with up to 80 percent energy savings.

What’s New?
With double the stacking bandwidth, double the stack members, double the queues, double the buffer sizes, faster
CPU, and more memory, the Cisco Catalyst 2960-X Series Switches bring a multifold improvement in performance
and capacity to the Cisco Catalyst 2960-S switches. The new Catalyst 2960-X series switches can be stacked for
up to 384 Gigabit Ethernet ports. Moreover, intelligent features such as Layer 3 routing (on 2960-XR models),
NetFlow-Lite, and Cisco Trust Anchor technology enable applications that were never possible on a 2960 switch
before. Finally, energy saving features such as Cisco EnergyWise, Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) and innovative
hibernation modes provide upto 80 percent energy savings. Table 1 illustrates the main enhancements in the Cisco
Catalyst 2960-X Series Switches.
Investment Protection
Designed for operational simplicity for lower TCO and investment protection, this platform supports mixed stacking
with existing Cisco Catalyst 2960-S and 2960-SF switches, thus making them a very viable migration option.

Why 2960-X?
Cisco Catalyst 2960-X switches are the next generation of the world’s most widely deployed access switch. With
their proven durability, extensive Layer 2 and Layer 3 (on 2960-XR models) feature set, industry-leading PoE+
support, dual FRU power supplies (on 2960-XR models), and operational features that lower total cost of
ownership, the 2960-X switches provide secure and reliable connectivity for both campus and branch deployments.
Cisco Catalyst 2960-X switches are the greenest access switches ever. They are equipped with Cisco
EnergyWise, Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE), and innovative energy saving hibernation modes. Collectively these
features are a game-changer in green technology that can reduce the power consumption by up to 80%.
Why Migrate?
Cisco Catalyst 2960-X Series Switches build upon the 2960-S Series and offer superior performance. They support
mixed stacking with the older 2960-S switches and provide a very easy migration path that can be achieved in
stages. Customers migrating to 2960-X will benefit from the increased scalability (2x better than the existing
platform), innovative new features and proven performance of the older 2960-S platform.
Migrating to 2960-X Models
The 2960-X Series include an equivalent or better replacement for each Cisco Catalyst 2960-S model.
Table 2 shows Cisco Catalyst 2960-S models and their 2960-X Series equivalents.
