LOOM BANDS
As most parents know, these items
are very popular at the moment, and I
actually don’t think they are such a
bad thing. What I am seeing at school
are kids happily working in groups,
using fine motor skills, creating things
and socialising. For that reason I
accept a reasonable amount of loom
band products (one or two bracelets,
no necklaces) being worn to school at
the moment – as long as kids don’t
fiddle with them in class! Mrs
Constable and I have decided to
embrace the trend and run a looming
club every Thursday in the library.
Kids are welcome to bring their own
materials along. We also have some
at school to share. Last week we had
a lot of fun; I have even learnt a thing
or two! If there are any parents who
would like to come and teach the kids
how to make other things you would
be most welcome. Thursday recess or

again this year, our
Grandparents and Friends Day. We
will be celebrating on Friday 12th
September with a Dance experience!
During dance children and adults
dance together where bonds of
friendship and community are made

was one of those events that will be a
cherished memory, full of smiling,
laughing and happy people. It was
fulfilling to see such a shared physical
activity that contained so much joy!
We look forward to everyone joining
us again this year. The students will
be busy next term during their PE

love having this opportunity to
develop the strong links between

What is Solving the Jigsaw?
A program addressing bullying and violence.
We as a school are really excited about having the Solving the Jigsaw program continue at Bogangar this year.
‘Jigsaw’ was introduced into the school in 2012 and we are proud to be addressing issues such as bullying and
violence in the classroom and playground. Jan Daly, is a nationally accredited trainer and facilitator of Solving
the Jigsaw, which was established in Victorian schools in 1997. Jan facilitates the program on Tuesdays in
4/5O, 5/6D and 3S. She delivers a one hour program with the whole class and the classroom teacher who also
participates. Classroom teachers also teach the fundamentals of the program on a weekly basis and continue
Professional Development each term to further their knowledge and skills. This year, Janice Aldridge has also
joined the ‘Jigsaw’ team at the school as she completes her Facilitators Training, working with Pauline Tobin
and her class of 5/6T.
The program consists of weekly activities where the children learn about a number of topics that impact on
young people’s lives today. Topics include resilience, violence and bullying, strengths and gorgeous qualities,
beliefs and values, trust groups and support systems, conflict resolution, friendships and group dynamics, feelings and emotions, loss and grief, anger, families, transition and change. A copy of the program outline is available from the Solving the jigsaw website www.solvingthejigsaw.org.au.
Jan Daly is at school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and is available for appointments with parents
after school should you have any concerns regarding your child’s wellbeing. (Please contact the office)
Solving the Jigsaw is a multi award winning program with 17 years practical experience working with over 500
teachers from over 100 schools and thousands of children and young people. Solving the Jigsaw is a program
from the Centre for Non Violence in Bendigo, Victoria.
Solving the Jigsaw works with your children, your school, your community. We believe every life, every story;
every child is important and precious.
Solving the Jigsaw Mission
Every school, every teacher, every classroom is safe, supportive and caring
Solving the Jigsaw Strategies
Create safety and challenge violence and bullying in all its forms. Resource teachers to be trusted, supportive,
responsive and reliable adults in the lives of children and young people. Create an environment at school where
children build relationships based on listening, sharing what’s in their hearts, what’s important to them, what’s
troubling them and having fun.
Building a Culture of Well Being
Solving the Jigsaw creates a ‘culture of well-being’. This means creating a safe environment, where children
and young people are valued, their experiences and thoughts are taken seriously, they are listened to, they are
able to share what’s in their hearts, what’s important to them, what’s troubling them. They experience connection and support from the group and adults and they are nurtured and cared for. Compassion and responsibility
for self is encouraged, time is available for thinking and considering, new ideas and options are explored. We
develop this culture through applying group work practice to the classroom environment. We establish and
maintain group rules including confidentiality. Through conversations and activities we value the thoughts, ideas, uniqueness and life stories of children and young people. Through weekly catch ups we encourage participants to monitor their weeks and to share with the group. This process supports the development of genuine
connection, belonging and intimacy within the group.
Changing the Culture of Violence
Changing the Culture of violence is about being up front about violence. This means being able to openly talk
about and explore with children and young people, what violence is, to develop an understanding and ability to
identify the types of violence and the ways violence affects people. It means developing an understanding of
concepts of misuse of power, deliberate harm, using power over to control and belittle someone as opposed to
power sharing. It’s about exploring where violence and bullying happens. It means gaining an understanding of
trust and trust groups and children learning about and identifying good and bad secrets. It’s about presenting
and enforcing a clear position that violence is not acceptable and must not be ignored or condoned. Changing
the culture of violence is about teaching children, young people and teachers strategies for dealing with violence
and bullying. It is about supporting individuals and groups to take assertive action to stop violence and bullying.
