Graduate School of Muamalat (GS-M) was established in 2010
under the umbrella of Faculty of Economics and Muamalat
(FEM). The School offers Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Masters
programmes as follows:

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
Applicants who wish to apply should have the following academic
requirements:
Faculty of Economics and Muamalat (FEM) was established in 2001
and is considered a pioneer and leading faculty in this field. Its
main aim is to offer broad-based degree programmes, at both the
undergraduate and postgraduate levels, that integrate Islamic
foundations
with
contemporary
knowledge
and
practices. The objective is to produce graduates that are
not only knowledgeable and competent in the field of
Islamic Business (Muamalat) but who are also creative and
trustworthy in discharging their duties as Muslim professionals.
Master Degree
Today, the Faculty is proud of its four (4) undergraduate
programmes:
• Bachelor of Muamalat Administration with Honours;
• Bachelor of Accounting with Honours;
• Bachelor of Marketing (Financial Services) with Honours; and
• Bachelor of Corporate Administration and Relation with
Honours.
Doctorate / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The establishment of Graduate School of Muamalat (GSMuamalat) is one of the biggest achievements of the Faculty in
offering comprehensive programme for the graduates who aim to
expand their knowledge and career in the area of Muamalat, Islamic
management, accounting, finance, banking, takaful and shariah
audit.

Suitable Bachelor degree with Honours and good grades with
CGPA = 2.75 and above from USIM; or
Suitable Bachelor degree with Honours and good grades: or
Jayyid; or CGPA = 2.75/4.00 and above; or CGPA 3.00/5.00
and above; or 60% and above from any other institution of
higher learning recognised by the Senate; or
Other qualifications equivalent to a Bachelor degree and
relevant professional experience recognised by the Senate.
Suitable Master degree with good grades from USIM; or
Suitable Master degree with good grades from any other
institutions of higher learning recognised by the Senate; or
Other qualification equivalent to a Master degree and
relevant professional experience recognised by the Senate;
or
Master degree candidates who are permitted by the
University Committee for Graduate Studies to convert their
study to PhD degree with approval of the Senate.
Applicants are required to demonstrate their proficiency in
English. Evidence of proficiency should be attached to the
application forms. Applicants may submit the score obtained in
TOEFL, IELTS or in MUET or any other tests that is equivalent and
recognised by the Senate to fulfill this requirement.

Data Analysis
(Students are required to register and attend two (2) courses, Research
Methodology and Data Analysis during the first semester and the latest is
by the second semester)
STRUCTURE OF PROGRAMME
FEES
Candidates who wish to pursue their studies by thesis writing are
required to sit and pass a qualifying test before being allowed to
continue with their research/thesis writing. The qualifying test
is a research-proposal defence in the presence of the Qualifying
Test Committee members. Failing to pass, candidates may re-sit
ONCE.

Master Degree
Each candidate is required to submit a thesis of not more
than 60,000 words. The total number of words must not
include footnotes, excerpts, appendices, formulas, tables,
diagrams, bibliographies, etc.
Thesis Supervision
Each candidate will be put under the supervision of a
Supervisor/Primary Supervisor and Co-supervisor/Supervisory
Committee appointed by the Dean of Graduate Studies. The
faculty will determine the appointment of supervisors.
Thesis Submission Requirements
PhD candidates who wish to pursue the programmes by research
and thesis writing are required to have:
• A thesis that will be examined by at least two (2) examiners,
where one of them must be an External Examiner.
• An oral examination (viva voce) to defend their thesis in
front of the Oral Examination Committee, appointed by the
Senate. Supervisors are invited to attend this examination
to confirm the decision made by the Graduate Examiner
Committee.
• A report submitted to the Dean of Graduate Studies
Centre and copy to the chairman of the Graduate Examiner
Committee.
