invitation creation of the european magnetic field laboratory

INVITATION
CREATION OF THE
EUROPEAN MAGNETIC
FIELD LABORATORY
Dear Sir or Madam, dear colleague,
we are pleased to cordially invite you to the launch meeting of the European
Magnetic Field Laboratory (EMFL) in Brussels. This formal collaboration also
includes the creation of a legal entity (an Association Internationale Sans But
Lucratif, AISBL) allowing membership of other European partners, with which
presently discussions are going on.

The EMFL is based on three founding organizations (CNRS, HZDR and
RU/FOM) which have decided voluntarily that their autonomous laboratories
(LNCMI-Toulouse and Grenoble), HLD (Dresden) and HFML (Nijmegen) will act
together as a single entity (EMFL) with the following mission:
The EMFL develops and operates world class high magnetic field facilities,
to use them for excellent research by in-house and external users.
Magnetic fields act as a magnifying glass to visualize the behavior of electrons inside materials and therefore are a very powerful tool for condensed
matter research. It is no surprise that many Nobel Prizes have been obtained
with magnetic fields playing an essential role. While many experiments
require only low magnetic fields that are easily available in a standard laboratory, often very high magnetic fields are needed, which are very challenging
to produce. EMFL is one of the few facilities in the world where these high
fields are found and it has an excellent research and user program. Its magnet
technology is world class and serves as a driving force for industrial innovation. EMFL is a demonstration of what European collaboration can achieve.
We look forward to celebrating the EMFL creation with you,
Jan Kees Maan, Nigel E. Hussey, Geert Rikken and Jochen Wosnitza
