FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE PROGRAM – OCT 2014

UTSC DEPARTMENT OF STUDENT LIFE
FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE PROGRAM – OCT 2014
Can you believe it’s October already? Time really does fly by. We hope your first month at school has
been enjoyable! September was full of great events and October has even more in store for you!

Mentor Meet Up!
September 10th was the date of our first official mentor meet-up! Mentors, first
year mentees, lead mentors and peer academic coaches came together for
introductions, fun, photos and good food. We were blown away by the turn out
and incredibly excited to experience the energy during the meet-up.
Dine With Your DSA!
What is a DSA you ask? A DSA is a
departmental student association. They serve
as a liaison between students and the staff &
faculty of a department! They provide student
services and hold events too.
On September 23, 2014, first year students
in the First Year Experience program had the
chance to meet with student executives from
the different DSAs. They had lunch together
and discussed different opportunities to get
involved!

Monthly Mentor Roundtable
RST YEAR EXPERIENCE PROGRAM – SEPT 2014
Every month, the volunteer mentors get together
with their lead mentors and they have a roundtable
meeting! It’s an excellent opportunity for the lead
mentors to catch up with all of their mentors and
ask for feedback about the program and their
experiences with their mentees. It’s also a great
time for brainstorming and goal setting – the room
was buzzing with energy and the scent of pizza!
Mentors, monthly roundtable meetings happen on
the last Wednesday of each month!
We want to hear from YOU! Whether you’re a
mentor or a mentee, feel free to drop by our office
(SL151) any time with questions, concerns, or just
to say hi! You can also email any feedback to
[email protected]!
Reminders/Tips for Midterm Season!
Time management is key.
⋅ Procrastination is the thing to avoid! Make use of your time and ensure that you’re on top of
your workload and other priorities.
Ask questions.
⋅ Professors and teaching assistants are great people to ask questions. Don’t hesitate to
reach out for help on assignments, or even tips on how to study for midterms.
⋅
Take advantage of the resources on campus!
⋅ There are lots of wonderful resources on campus that can help you with your assignments,
or help you work on your study skills. Some of these include: the Writing Centre
(http://ctl.utsc.utoronto.ca/twc/main) and the Academic Advising & Career Centre
(http://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/aacc/) who hold workshops regularly!
⋅
Plan out your reading week!
⋅ Reading week is an excellent time to catch up on reading, assignments, and studying! It’s
also a great time to take some time and rejuvenate – make sure you’re taking breaks
between long study sessions!
⋅
Take care of yourself.
⋅ We can’t stress enough how important it is to be looking after your well-being! If you aren’t
taking care of yourself, it’s that much harder to get work done. Make sure you’re nourishing
yourself with proper meals and that you’re getting enough sleep! (All nighters aren’t all
they’re cracked up to be).
