Introduction
The effective management of sand is critical for
maintaining the integrity of operator assets and optimising
oil & gas production. That’s why choosing a sand/erosion
monitoring solution is a critical decision for operators,
and why the Roxar SandLog D will be a key element of
future flow assurance strategies.
Together with Emerson's unique multiple element
sand/erosion probe and Roxar Fieldwatch software,
Roxar SandLog D provides probably the best combination
of detection reliability and accuracy for sand/erosion
monitoring. Roxar SandLog D is provided in explosion
proof design, for service in hazardous areas and with
state of the art performance and flexibility.

Sand/erosion is measured through the erosive effect
caused by sand particles hitting the sensing elements of
the intrusive sand probe, using high accuracy Electrical
Resistance (ER) technology. When combining measured
sand/erosion rates with flow rates and assumed sand
particle size, sand production can be quantified.

System Description
Roxar SandLog multiple element sand probes are connected
through a connection box and a probe cable to the Roxar
Sandlog D instrument (max length 20 meters). This adds
flexibility for instrument access even if probes are
installed at inaccessible locations.
Roxar SandLog D and the Field Interface Unit (FIU D)
are powered by an external 24VDC power supply and
communicate via the same Field Bus Cable. The FIU D
must be installed in a safe zone (normally in a cabinet in
the control room), but can also be installed in an explosion
proof enclosure in Hazardous area.
Data is forwarded from FIU D to a PC server where Roxar
Fieldwatch software is installed. A range of communication
options are available, RS 232, RS 485, GSM/GPRS, radio,
etc. Roxar Fieldwatch provide analysis and reporting
functions,and communicates with main control systems
through OPC or Modbus protocols.
The Roxar Sand/Erosion probes is designed due to the
fact that it t is difficult to predict sand distribution in
a line, as it depends upon flow velocities and flowline
design, which is the basis for the following unique
design features:
• It is recommended that the sand/erosion probe is
installed in a vertical pipe, preferably 10 pipe diameters
after a bend, where sand is assumed to be relatively
uniformly distributed within the pipe. Sand/erosion
probes may also be installed in other positions, e.g.
horizontal lines, depending on flow conditions.
• The sand/erosion probe is installed into the pipe, with
sensing elements facing the flow at an optimum angle,
in order to maximize sensitivity and minimize response
time for sand erosion and performance.
• Multiple elements (max 4) increase the probability to
detect sand independently of distribution within the
pipe, and also give redundancy with respect to probe
measurements and performance.
• Probes with a combination of corrosion elements and
sand/erosion elements can also be monitored by
Roxar SandLog D.

Roxar SandLog D forms part of an integrated flow assurance
monitoring offering from Roxar, that also includes:
• Intrusive Corrosion Monitoring (Roxar CorrLog D)
• Non-intrusive corrosion monitoring (Roxar FSM)
• Non-intrusive acoustic sand monitoring (Roxar SAM)
• Non-intrusive acoustic pig detectors
• All integrated in one cabinet, and controlled by
Roxar Fieldwatch Sofware
Integration of the functions above provides commercial
and technical advantages in the project, installation,
training and after sales support phases - in addition to
reduced hardware requirements since the same cabinet,
cabling, and server can be used for multiple functions.
