Towards a safer, more efficient and sustainable industry
Profitability and financial stability have eluded the airline industry in recent times. In response, the
industry has looked to other operating models to support growth, including the popular trend of
outsourcing ground handling and other services. The focus remains: meet customer needs in a safe
operation and leverage technology for greater efficiency. However, achieving efficiencies and safety
improvements are not attainable without the collaboration of all industry stakeholders - especially
airports, ground service providers and manufacturers. The question then becomes: how do we work
together to make our industry truly sustainable?

Flight safety and ULD operations – ground service providers’ responsibilities
While airlines carry the regulatory responsibility to use only airworthy ULD on their flights, ground
service providers perform a large proportion of ULD ground operations, and without their active
participation in proper ULD operations, airlines are exposed to unacceptable regulatory and flight
safety risks. The industry as a whole should recognize that ULD safety in the air can only be achieved
with safe operations on the ground and safe ULD operations should be prioritized to meet flight safety
requirements. This session is facilitated by the IATA ULD Panel and you will have opportunity to gain
valuable insights and knowledge of increasing regulatory oversight on ULD operations, which is too
often taken for granted or overshadowed by issues such as security or dangerous goods.

Safety starts on the ground.
IATA Safety Audits for Ground Operations
Ground Damage costs the industry billions of dollars a year and is the third most common type of accident,
representing 13% of accidents during the past years.
IATA Safety Audits for Ground Operations (ISAGO) aims to improve safety and in addition cut airline costs by
reducing the amount of duplicate audits on average by 30% using internationally recognized standards and quality
auditing principles with the objective of drastically reducing ground accidents and injuries, while driving down the
number of duplicates or redundant audits.
