STEP UP- A Skills to Empowerment Programme of SILF
NURSING SCHOLARSHIP FOR GIRLS ANNOUNCEMENT
1) Sasakawa India Leprosy Foundation (SILF) is pleased to invite applications for
financial support from girl students residing in self-settled leprosy colonies for
pursuing nursing studies.
2) The scholarship will be given for onlyi)
B.Sc Nursing (Basic) or
ii) General Nursing and Mid Wifery (GNM) course
3) The scholarship will be available only for courses offered by Nursing Institutes
recognised by Indian Nursing Council.
4) No capitation fee will be paid for admission.
5) SILF will support up to 10 students this academic year.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Applicants must fulfil the following conditions:
1) At least one parent must have had leprosy and must be residing in a self settled
leprosy colony.
2) Only one individual from a family can avail of the scholarship in any one year.
3) Applicants from neglected regions especially backwards states will be given
preferences.
4) Applicant opting for B.Sc (Basic Nursing) must have cleared her higher
secondary education (10+2) from a recognized school with Physics, Chemistry,
Biology and English with an aggregate of 45% marks.
5) Applicant opting for General Nursing & Midwifery must have cleared her higher
secondary education (10+2) from a recognized school preferably with Physics,
Chemistry and Biology with an aggregate of 40% marks.
6) Applicant must not be less than 17 years at the time of application.
NOTE: Applications from students who do not meet the above requirements will not be
considered.
HOW TO APPLY?
I.STEP 1: Registration with SILF
1) Interested applicants are required to send a letter to SILF stating their intention
to take up nursing studies in the academic year 2014-2015. This letter should
also give the entrance exams they intend to take along with tentative time
schedule of these exams.
2) The letters of intent must reach SILF office by 30th of April, 2014.
3) A sample of the letter is given below:

I. STEP 2: Application Forms
A. Application Forms: After getting the Board results, interested candidates are
requested to apply to SILF for the scholarship.
1) Candidates must apply on the prescribed application forms. These forms
are available with National Forum State Leaders as well as the SILF
website (www.silf.in). Forms can also be obtained by post from SILF
office in New Delhi.
2) Application forms must be attested by both state and colony leaders.
PLEASE NOTE: Applications which are not on the prescribed forms will not be
considered.
B. Accompanying documents:
Application forms must be accompanied by the following documents:

Proof of admission in a recognised institute by Indian Nursing Council with
supporting documents.

Candidates must submit an admission call letter issued by the institute to which
she has secured admission.

3 passport size photographs of the applicant,

Copies of the following documents, attested by colony leaders
i) Birth certificate or proof of date of birth
ii) Matriculation (10th) and 12th pass certificate
iii) Mark sheets of the 10th and 12th Board Exam
iii) Leprosy certificate of parent/ parents
iv) Income proof of the family

A reference letter from the colony leader certifying that the candidate is a
resident of the colony and is the only candidate from her family.
C. Last Date The completed forms along with the necessary certificates must reach
the SILF office by 10th July, 2014.
PLEASE NOTE: Incomplete forms will not be considered.
Selection of Students

All eligible candidates will be listed in the order of the set criteria of merit in the
last Board examination.

Ten top candidates will be selected for the scholarship by selection committee.

In case, a candidate decides not to avail of scholarship, the candidate next in line
will be eligible to avail of the scholarship.
Payment
 SILF will pay for the tuition fees and boarding/ hostel expenses to the institutes
directly.
 SILF will also pay a stipend of Rs 1000 per month to each candidate to meet their
requirements.
Expectations from Selected Candidates

Regular attendance and dedication to learning

High performance

Regular performance reports will be submitted by the beneficiary every quarter
or as decided at the time of award of scholarship. A draft Performa will be
provided to the selected candidates

Participation of beneficiary in workshops with mentors.

The candidates should adhere to all the rules, regulations, and discipline of the
respective institution/hostel where they are studying. Any report from the
institute/hostel which amounts to violation of the above would result in
withdrawal of the scholarship.

After successful completion of the course, all the Scholarship holders are
expected to give compulsory free community service of at least 5 hours a week
for serving the leprosy affected community either in her own colony or a colony
of choice nearest to her workplace for 2 years.

She is also expected to motivate and guide other youths in the colonies. A
contract of commitment to free community service shall be worked out between
the students and SILF.
