“All that is
necessary for a
student is access to a
library.”
Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating
the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. It highlights the value of free and open access to information. Intellectual freedom—the freedom to access information and express ideas, even if the information and ideas
might be considered unorthodox or unpopular—provides the
foundation for Banned Books Week. Banned Book Week
stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints for all who wish to read and access them.

Tantamount
\TAN-tuh-mount\
Adjective
Definition
: equivalent in value, significance,
or effect
Examples:
1. The boss had told Morris that
he was being reassigned to the
shipping department, and he
knew that it was tantamount to
a demotion.
2. "Mrs. Clinton declined an
invitation to speak, organizers
said. Democratic analysts said
that was no surprise—for her to
attend such a gathering would
have been tantamount to
announcing a presidential run,
which she is not yet ready to
do." — Sheryl Gay Stolberg, The
New York Times, July 19, 2014
The August/September issue of Library Media Connection contained these Google search tricks which I
though you might find useful:
♦
Hit Control + F to find sites with specific, highlighted text.
♦
Use +/-.edu, .com, .gov, .net, .org.
♦
Add quotation marks to keep phrases together.
♦
Use “intitle” to search for terms in the title of a site.
♦
Search within a URL:topicinurl:csiro.
♦
For specific file types use “topic”filetype:ppt (or doc, etc).
♦
Show search tools: Search by date ranges, within content such as images.
♦
Use the advanced search to show pages with specific terms, languages, reading level.
The number of results changes depending on how we search. You can save lots of time and effort with these
tips.
Dollyhigh, Trish “Don’t Fight ‘Em, Join ‘Em!” Library Media Connection, August/September 2014, pg. 33.
About the Word:
Tantamount comes from the AngloFrench phrase tant amunter, meaning
"to amount to as much." This phrase
comes from the Old French tant,
meaning "so much" or "as much,"
and amounter, meaning "to ascend" or
"to add up to." When tantamount first
entered English, it was used similarly
to the Anglo-French phrase, as a verb
meaning "to be equivalent." There was
also a noun tantamount in the 17th
century, but the adjective is the only
commonly used form of the term
today.
