The case mix for the ICU is predominantly emergency admissions, with approx. 90%-10% emergency: elective split and approx. 70:30 medical:surgical 3.4 Details of training opportunities on the unit split. We have a keen interest in multi-centre research and take part in most major national trials. We have also commenced single unit research and have 2 dedicated ICU research nurses as well as strong links with the University of Canterbury. We strongly advocate critical care ultrasound and encourage trainees to become familiar with focussed echocardiography.
