The department seeks individuals with a background in Visual Impairments, and with a familiarity with the principles and philosophies for students with visual impairments related to the expanded core curriculum, access technology, developmental concerns, educational methods, and alternative communication methods including Braille. Candidates for this position need to reflect an ability to train personnel to assume a variety of positions within early childhood settings, elementary and secondary schools, institutions of higher education, and agencies as teachers, leaders, advocates, and program managers. In addition, candidates must have demonstrated national level commitment to an emerging record of scholarship, and experience in research and externally funded projects. The department is a large and comprehensive unit with 16 full-­‐time faculty and over 500 students. The department offers a range of credential, certificate, and degree programs in Special Education and Communicative Disorders as well as a Faculty providing leadership, scholarship and training across the following programs: • Joint Doctoral Program in Special Education with the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley • Education Specialist credentials and Added Authorizations in Autism Spectrum Disorders, Early Childhood Special Education and Orthopedic Impairments. • Clinical Rehabilitative Services credential in Orientation and Mobility • M.S. & Speech-­‐Language Pathology Services Credential in Communicative Disorders • M.A. in Special Education (with emphasis areas in Mild/Moderate Disabilities, Early Childhood Special Education, Visual Impairments, Moderate/Severe Disabilities, and Orientation & Mobility) • Graduate Certificate programs offered in Early Childhood Special Education, and Autism Spectrum. Professional certification in visual rehabilitation and orientation and mobility by the Association for
Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER).
Emerging record of research, teaching, and service.
Experience in preparation and management of externally funded grants and contracts.
Experience facilitating student access to general education curriculum and expanded core
curriculum in a variety of educational settings.
Ability to communicate with general educators and with a variety of educational, rehabilitation, and
medical professionals, promoting participation in collaborative activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop and teach courses in assessment and instructional methods for students with visual
impairments

Recruit and mentor graduate students including those of diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds

Coordinate projects and academic development with other related disciplines within the university
Actively seek external funding for research, teaching, and program development efforts
Participate in assigned non-teaching university activities such as advising and committee work at
department, college, and university levels
Actively engage in research, demonstration and dissemination of scholarly information.
