Emmen and Coevorden offer a wide range
of MBO and HBO secondary and higher
vocational educational courses. The HBO Logistics & Economics course in Emmen enjoys
international fame. There is also a Logistics
lectureship here.
Expectations are that demand for trained
logistics employees will continue to increase
in years to come, partly due to the positive

room for business and logistics growth.
Six kilometres over the border, this expressway connects
to the A31 and E233 at Meppen in Germany. The roads
are virtually free from congestion, allowing trucks to
reach the major German economic centres, the Ruhr area
and Bremen-Hamburg, within three hours. The quickest
connection to Bremen and Hamburg, the E233, is already
mostly four lanes; the remaining stretches will follow suit in
the years to come. More than 4500 trucks use this route
daily.
Inland shipping
Inland shipping has access to the region via the
Coevorden-Almelo canal. The ports of Amsterdam and
Rotterdam can be reached in around 18 hours.
At Coevorden, the trains from the adjacent rail terminal
can travel all the way to the quayside. From there, the
containers/goods are transshipped between the ships
and trains or trucks in a single handling process.
There is access for ships weighing up to 800 tons, and
55 metres long. The province of Overijssel is working with
Dryport Emmen-Coevorden to continue to upgrade and
improve utilisation of the shipping connection. The inner
ports of Emmen and Veenoord are easily reachable for
Spitz type barges.

Modal shift
DRYPORT EMMEN - COEVORDEN
Logistic hub with
European allure
Emmen and Coevorden, the largest industrial concentration of the northern Netherlands.
The Netherlands wishes to remain the European number one when it comes
to transport and logistics. Bottlenecks in the traffic infrastructure are therefore
disastrous. The solution lies in a modal shift: moving transport off the roads and
onto rail and inland shipping wherever possible. A modal shift to inland dryports,
where port activities such as customs checks and distribution can be carried out,
is becoming increasingly essential for Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
At the same time, such a shift reduces CO2 emissions. Dryport EmmenCoevorden aims to play a significant role in this development and is therefore a
participant in Green Corridor, a European Interreg project. The project target is to
determine how to render the Rotterdam-Scandinavia transport corridor greener,
more efficient and safer.

Dryport Emmen-Coevorden is a joint initiative by the municipalities of Emmen and Coevorden
and the province of Drenthe. They are supported by Stenden (Emmen) and Windesheim (Zwolle)
universities and a group of logistics-based companies, known collectively as BADEC, Business
Association Dryport Emmen-Coevorden.
The Logistics lectureship of Stenden University in Emmen, is conducting research into, and stimulating innovation in the sector.

Nedersaksen province, the cross-border industrial estate which houses the trimodal Euroterminal Emmen-Coevorden-Hardenberg, has been
given the official status of GüterVerkehrsZentrum (GVZ). That is truly unique! The GVZ network comprises 25 logistics hubs, including Bremen,

Dryport Emmen-Coevorden is specialised in agri-business and chemicals.
Millions of tons are transshipped here, and gain added value.
Agri-logistics is a growing market in Coevorden, with great specialisation
in grain and flour. Global concerns such as Procter & Gamble and
Glecore Grain have already become established here. Emmen holds
a top European position, with a considerable cluster of polymer
producers within concerns such as DSM, Akzo and Teijin.

Dryport Emmen-Coevorden is the solution for the hindrance
caused by (even more) goods trains in Overijssel cities and
villages, which is so often the cause of protest. EmmenCoevorden becomes a feeder for Bentheim in this construction.
Furthermore, it represents better utilisation of the existing rail
network, therefore also less investment. The dryport EmmenCoevorden with Euroterminal forms a unique link between
the German and Dutch rail networks. Via the KombiVerkehr
network, among others, freight trains travel to and fro between
25 European cities on a daily basis.
